Study of Channelized Traffic

Description: Summary: The design of many contemporary aircraft, layout of base facilities, and operational characteristics of planes necessitate movements of these aircraft along prescribed paths. Undesirable effects on pavements have been observed at a number of places under this type of traffic from B-47 planes.

Model Study of Galveston Harbor Entrance, Texas: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Report discussing the results of a series of tests in Galveston Bay to: "(a) develop plans for relocation and stabilization of the jetty channel on an alignment and at a depth suitable fro the safe passage of supertankers; (b) determine means for protecting the north jetty from the undermining action of tidal currents; (c) determine the shoaling characteristics of the relocated and deepened jetty (inner bar) channel and develop plans for minimizing shoaling in the relocated channel; and (d) det… more

Marysville Lake Hydrothermal Study: Report 2

Description: Partial abstract: "This study was conducted to determine the effect that the proposed Marysville Lake pump-storage hydropower (2250-mw power plant) project would have on downstream water temperatures. A one-dimensional numerical model was used for simulation and prediction of temperatures within and downstream of Marysville Lake. Two physical hydraulic models were used for study and description of the hydrodynamic response of the project. Information from the physical models was necessary to de… more

An Analytical Model for Predicting Cross-Country Vehicle Performance, Appendix D: Performance of Amphibious Vehicles in the Water-Land Interface (Hydrologic Geometry)

Description: Summary: "Forty tests were conducted with two amphibious tracked vehicles and one amphibious wheeled vehicle at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and near Khon Kaen, Thailand, to determine the vehicles' capabilities for exiting closed bodies of water. Empirical relations, based on the data collected in this study and in previous studies, are presented to support the conclusions that performance of amphibious tracked and wheeled vehicles (in terms of "go-no go") in the water-land interface can be corr… more

Engineering Geology and Geomorphology of Streambank Erosion, Report 3: The Application of Waterborne Geophysical Techniques in Fluvial Environments

Description: Partial abstract: "The development of waterborne geophysical systems and techniques has provided the geotechnical community with an array of data acquisition tools that can be applied to the fluvial environment. The major purpose of the study described in this report is to evaluate the performance, application, and capability of selected waterborne acoustic profiling systems for streambank erosion studies in fluvial environments. Additional objectives of the study reported herin were to prese… more

Short- and Long-Time Deflections of Reinforced Concrete Flat Slabs

Description: Summary: "This report summarizes the results of a field investigation to determine the short- and long-time deflections and concrete strains in an Army barracks flat-plate structure at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas. Due to the rather great slab thickness of 9 in., corresponding to an L/T ratio of approximately 28, all observed deflections were small and in no instance exceeded 0.022 ft, or about 1/800 of the shorter span, during the 45-month observation period, in spite of an early temporary constr… more
