Thin-film characterization and flaw detection. Final report, February 1, 1993--November 31, 1997

Description: The objectives were to determine the elastic constants of thin films deposited on substrates, to measure residual stress and to detect and characterize defects in thin film substrate configurations. There are many present and potential applications of configurations consisting of a thin film deposited on a substrate. Thin films that are deposited to improve the hardness and/or the thermal properties of surfaces were of principal interest in this work. Thin film technology does, however, also in… more

Letter of Intent for RPP Characterization Program Process Engineering and Hanford Analytical Services and Characterization Project

Description: The Characterization Project level of success achieved by the River Protection Project (RPP) is determined by the effectiveness of several organizations across RPP working together. The requirements, expectations, interrelationships, and performance criteria for each of these organizations were examined in order to understand the performances necessary to achieve characterization objectives. This Letter of Intent documents the results of the above examination. It formalizes the details of inter… more

[Three-dimensional position-sensitive germanium detectors]. Annual report for EMSP Project Number 65015

Description: This study focuses on the radioactive materials characterization needs of DOE's decontamination and decommissioning effort. Gamma-ray imaging and spectroscopy together form a potentially powerful tool for the passive, non-destructive and non-intrusive identification and spatial mapping of contaminated structures. Germanium position-sensitive gamma-ray detectors offer the advantage of excellent energy resolution required for clear isotopic identification combined with potentially high spatial re… more

Project W-211 Initial Tank Retrieval Systems (ITRS) Description of Operations for 241-AZ-102

Description: The primary purpose of the Initial Tank Retrieval Systems (ITRS) is to provide systems for retrieval of radioactive wastes stored in underground double-shell tanks (DSTs) for transfer to alternate storage, evaporation, pretreatment or treatment, while concurrently reducing risks associated with safety watch list and other DSTs. This Description of Operation (DOO) defines the control philosophy for the waste retrieval system for Tank 241-AZ-102 (AZ-102). This DOO provides a basis for the detaile… more

Exploratory Experimentation and Computation

Description: We believe the mathematical research community is facing a great challenge to re-evaluate the role of proof in light of recent developments. On one hand, the growing power of current computer systems, of modern mathematical computing packages, and of the growing capacity to data-mine on the Internet, has provided marvelous resources to the research mathematician. On the other hand, the enormous complexity of many modern capstone results such as the Poincare conjecture, Fermat's last theorem, an… more

Macroencapsulation of mixed waste debris at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation -- Final project report by AST Environmental Services, LLC

Description: This report summarizes the results of a full-scale demonstration of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) package, manufactured by Arrow Construction, Inc. of Montgomery, Alabama. The HDPE package, called ARROW-PAK, was designed and patented by Arrow as both a method to macroencapsulation of radioactively contaminated lead and as an improved form of waste package for treatment and interim and final storage and/or disposal of drums of mixed waste. Mixed waste is waste that is radioactive, and meets… more

Computational Theory of Warm Condensed Matter

Description: We have developed an improved computational theory of condensed matter in the regime where T {le} T{sub Fermi}. Previous methods of calculating the equation of state (EOS) relied on interpolation between low-temperature (solid) and high-temperature (plasma) limits, or employed severe approximations. Recent theoretical and experimental developments have highlighted the need for accurate EOS and opacity data in the intermediate temperature range and offer the opportunity to test theoretical model… more

Fundamental nucleon-nucleon interaction: probing exotic nuclear structure using GEANIE at LANCE/WNR

Description: The initial goal of this project was to study the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction by testing the fundamental theory of nuclear structure, the shell model, for nuclei between {sup 8}Zr and {sup 100}Sn. The shell model predicts that nuclei with ''magic'' (2,8,20,28,40,50, and 82) numbers of protons or neutrons form closed shells in the same fashion as noble gas atoms [may49]. A ''doubly magic'' nucleus with a closed shell of both protons and neutrons has an extremely simple structure and is… more

Recommendations to apply the ``square pile`` total control concept

Description: It is recommended that the ``square pile`` concept be adopted for all disaster total control calculations, and that the basic reactor constants listed in HW-62884, except for Ball 3X local strength at the DR Reactor, be used in applying this method. Curves are included for each reactor type, indicating allowable enrichment based on appropriate local control strengths. (The reactors whose operating methods are affected by disaster total control requirements are B, D, F, and DR Reactors; the rema… more

A Heavy Flavor Tracker for STAR

Description: The STAR Collaboration proposes to construct a state-of-the-art microvertex detector, the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT), utilizing active pixel sensors and silicon strip technology. The HFT will significantly extend the physics reach of the STAR experiment for precision measurement of the yields and spectra of particles containing heavy quarks. This will be accomplished through topological identification of D mesons by reconstruction of their displaced decay vertices with a precision of approximate… more

Geophysical and geochemical models of the Earth's shields and rift zones

Description: This report summarizes a collection of, synthesis of, and speculation on the geophysical and geochemical models of the earth's stable shields and rift zones. Two basic crustal types, continental and oceanic, and two basic mantle types, stable and unstable, are described. It is pointed out that both the crust and upper mantle play a strongly interactive role with surface geological phenomena ranging from the occurrence of mountains, ocean trenches, oceanic and continental rifts to geographic dis… more
