Electrostatic Classification of Submicron Airborne Particles : Final Report, August 16, 1961 to January 31, 1963

Description: From abstract: "This project was a study of electrostatic classification of submicron aerosols. Classification of particles as small as 0.006-[mu]-diameter was shown to be feasible, and good classification of atmospheric dust was achieved. However, a practical solution to the problem of overlapping between particles larger and smaller than 0.1 [mu], the point of minimum electric mobility, was not found."

Some Electronic Accounting Devices for Data Logging Applications

Description: Several analog accounting circuits were designed to determine their applicability to pulse counting in connection with metering of flows in waste calcination processes. Results indicate that a one amplifier design based on transfer function simulation is to be recommended. By use of this circuit design, frequencies of 200 to 50,000 cps can be counted. (J.R.D.)

Sponge Fuel Evaluation. Phase II Report, August 23, 1961 to January 31, 1963

Description: A sponge fuel capsule irradiation started early in the current contract period had to be terminated prematurely because of unpredicted behavior. This capsule was then examined along with one from the previous contract period which had also failed prematurely. Examination showed that the cause of failure had been correctiy interpreted from thermocouple data in both cases, but revealed some additional faults which needed to be corrected. Inpile sintering of sponge fuel appeared slight in 30 days … more

CASPER: A Generalized Program for Plotting and Scaling Data

Description: A Fortran subroutine was written to scale floating-point data and generate a magnetic tape to plot it on the Calcomp 570 digital plotter. The routine permits a great deal of flexibility, and may be used with any type of FORTRAN or FAP calling program. A simple calling program was also written to permit the user to read in data from cards and plot it without any additional programming. Both the Fortran and binary decks are available. (auth)

Ion Exchange Separation of Cesium From Alkaline Waste Supernatant Solutions

Description: Cesium separation from Purex alkaline supernatant waste by ion exchange with inorganic zeolites or phenolic resins was investigated. High cesium loadings were obtained with AW-400, a synthetic zeolite manufactured by the Linde Company. A disadvantage of the AW-400 is the poor quality of the binder; efforts are being made to obtain a more suitable binder. Optimum loading conditions appear to be a flow rate of one to two column volumes of actual waste per hour, with 20-50 mesh exchanger at a temp… more

Backup water supplies to K Reactors, 1963

Description: The K Reactors were originally scoped to have three independent electrical power supplies and to be able to transfer process water, filtered water, raw water and electrical power from one K Plant to the other. It was required that shutdown flow to each reactor be available from at least four separate pumping stations. The originally scoped power level was 1300 MW, yet a plentitude of coolant supply means were provided, as can be seen from the above statements. Today, 1963, the K Reactors operat… more

Chemical Technology Division. Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, June 1962

Description: The development of foam separation as a unit operation was considered from the distributor design and gas rate standpoints. The development of a shear and leach process for power reactor fuel processing is reported in which carburized Yankee prototype fuel assemblies were sheared to determine the effect of fuel element condition on the nature of the chopped pieces. A Squarkeen No. 3 moving blade lasted for 5894 cuts while a Kleencut blade failed at 320 cuts under normal program use. A plastics … more

A Plug-in-Type Mass Spectrometer Surface Ionization Source for Use With a Vacuum Lock

Description: A plug-in-type surface ionization source has been designed and built to be used with a mass spectrometer equipped with a vacuum lock. The sample filament mounts on a male plug which fits into a female receptacle mounted on a case plate. A firm electrical contact is realized. Sample plugs are changed without loss of vacuum and can be used with any geometrically orientated analyzer tube. (auth)

Economic analysis of 10-inch and 12-inch fuel element production for three separate conditions

Description: Three conditions representing various quantities of 10-inch and/or 12-inch fuel elements were presented by the Industrial Engineering Group, IPD, as a basis for initial estimates of economic incentive to partially convert the Production Fuels Section AlSi process to longer fuel elements for FY 1964. An earlier study (Ref. 1) pertained to 10-inch instead of 6-inch enriched fuels. The comparatively larger quantities of the 4 in. longer fuel for full E-N loading showed a larger payout than for the… more

Loading, operating conditions, and water shutoff times for a charge of twelve 17-inch N inner fuel tubes or twelve 18-inch U-2 w/o Zr elements, PT-IP-536-A and PT-IP-536-A, Supplement B

Description: Production test IP-536-A authorizes the irradiation of N Reactor inner fuel tubes in KER-1 and KER-2. Supplement B, PT-IP-536-A, authorizes the irradiation of N Reactor inner fuel tubes prepared from a U-2 w/o Zr alloy. Both tests require that specific operating conditions and trip settings for particular loadings be approved by the managers of the Process and Reactor Development Sub-Section and the Process Technology Sub-Section prior to charging. The purpose of this document is to provide the… more

Penetration Effects in Magnetic-Dipole L-shell Internal Conversion

Description: Internal-conversion coefficients may be thought of as consisting of two parts: a usually dominant part which depends only on the atomic number and the nuclear transition energy, and a usually small part depending explicitly on nuclear transition matrix elements. This latter part arises from the penetration of the converting atomic electrons within the transforming nucleus.

A Simple Theory of the Process P+P → D+W+

Description: The discovery of the vector meson which mediates the weak interactions, W,1 would be of extreme importance for weak interaction physics and for field theory in general. The W, if it exists, will be made in a variety of processes such as v+N →W+ + e- + N, or n- + P →W- + P, or, as studied in this note, P + P → D + W+. The W couples to leptons with a dimensionless constant [constant not transcribed] where G is the Feral constant defined t=so that [constant not transcribed]. Thus for [equation not… more

Some Further Remarks on Beam Current Measurements in the AGS

Description: A previous report on this subject (Brookhaven National Laboratory, AGS Internal Report, ECR-4) described in detail the methods of measuring the injected and accelerated proton currents in the Brookhaven AGS up to May 1961. At that time the accelerated current was measured by extracting the bunch frequency component of the signal given by a pair of radial position observation electrodes. The injected current was also determined by the signal induced on a similar pair of radial position electrode… more
