Emanation of tritiated water from disposal sites at Los Alamos, New Mexico

Description: The level of contamination induced by the presence of tritiated water (HTO) on the Bandelier tuff near Los Alamos, New Mexico has been seen to decrease vertically and horizontally at the same rate. This decrease in radioactivity with distance from the source has been measured around three different disposal shafts and found to be somewhat slower than the decrease in emanation rate with distance from the source. Physical factors, suspected of influencing HTO emanation, were entered as independen… more

Approach to Numerical Safety Guidelines Based on a Core Melt Criterion. [PWR; BWR]

Description: A plausible approach is proposed for translating a single level criterion to a set of numerical guidelines. The criterion for core melt probability is used to set numerical guidelines for various core melt sequences, systems and component unavailabilities. These guidelines can be used as a means for making decisions regarding the necessity for replacing a component or improving part of a safety system. This approach is applied to estimate a set of numerical guidelines for various sequences of c… more

Rummy high-altitude pressure measurements and analysis

Description: Five pressure-measurement canisters equipped with parachutes were deployed from an A7C aircraft on the Rummy test. Their altitudes above Yucca flat were over 8.5 km when the pressure pulse arrived. Three successful measurements were obtained. These time histories showed a more complicated behavior than histories obtained on Pahute Mesa tests because the Rummy event developed double spall closures over a large area. Excellent agreement was obtained between the observed pressure histories and tho… more

Effect of Parasitic Refrigeration on the Efficiency of Magnetic Liquefiers

Description: Our studies have shown that magnetic refrigerators have the potential to liquefy cryogens very efficiently. High efficiency is especially important for liquid hydrogen and natural gas applications where the liquefaction costs are a significant fraction of the total liquid cost. One of the characteristics of magnetic refrigerators is the requirement for a high-field superconducting magnet. Providing a 4.2-K bath for this magnet will require a small amount of parasitic refrigeration at 4.2 K even… more

Use of plutonium isotope activity ratios in dating recent sediments. [/sup 238/Pu//sup 239/Pu + /sup 240/Pu]

Description: The majority of plutonium presently in the biosphere has come from the testing of nuclear devices. In the early 1950s, the Pu-238/239+240 activity ratio of fallout debris was > 0.04; in the more extensive test series of 1961 to 1962, the Pu-238/239+240 activity ratios were quite consistent at 0.02 to 0.03 and maximum fallout delivery occurred in mid-1963. A significant perturbation in Pu isotope activity ratios occurred in mid-1966 with the deposition of Pu-238 from the SNAP-9A reentry and b… more
