Physical properties of halthane series adhesives, part 2 of 2. Period covered: October--December 1976. [Urethanes: tensile adhesion; bulk viscosity; hardness]

Description: The Halthane series of urethane adhesives have sufficient adhesive strengths and cure times for most assembly processes at Pantex. The efficiency of preparation and handling of the three systems are nearly equal. Physical properties are more consistent between samples for the 87-1. The 73-18 system is ranked in the middle and 73-14 as the least consistent. The 87-1 system is high in viscosity and adhesive bond strength. The low viscosity of 73-18 and 73-14 allows more consistency in bond thickn… more

Tritium storage development. Progress report No. 12, April--June 1977. [In metal hydride; polymer impregnated tritiated concrete]

Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Titanium sponge and rod were also hydrided for comparison. Zirconium and titanium samples containing tritium were prepared and initial leach data were obtained. Leach rates for zirconium in distilled water ranged from 1.1 x 10/sup -6/ to 4.… more

One and two electron integrals over Cartesian Gaussian functions

Description: A formalism is developed which allows overlap, kinetic energy, potential energy and electron repulsion integrals over cartesian Gaussian functions to be expressed in a very compact form involving easily computed auxiliary functions. Similar formulas involving the same auxiliary functions are given for the common charge moments, electric-field operators, and spin-interaction operators. Recursion relations are given for the auxiliary functions which make possible the use of Gaussian functions of … more

Description: Honeywell G2655 lithium cells were tested over the temperature range -40/sup 0/ to +70/sup 0/C and subjected to shock levels up to 17,000 g's. Output at -40/sup 0/C was approximately 50 percent of that at +25/sup 0/C, while at +70/sup 0/C the output was 150 percent that at +25/sup 0/C. Shock had no noticeable effect on performance. 99 figures, 6 tables. (auth)

Fluidized bed incineration of transuranic contaminated waste

Description: A 9 kg/h pilot scale fluidized bed incinerator is now being used for burning various types of radioactive waste at Rocky Flats Plant. General solid combustible waste containing halogenated materials is burned in a fluidized bed of sodium carbonate for in stu neutralization of thermally generated acidic gases. A variety of other production related materials has been burned in the incinerator, including ion exchange resin, tributyl phosphate solutions, and air filters. Successful operation of the… more

Accurate machining

Description: Very minor test part experience of the all-rotary machine has been obtained. Results at this point appear to verify that the machines (both in the three axis and in the phonograph configuration) are inherently more accurate than machines with slides. Much more work is needed to define the desirable operating parameters and the size capacity of the all rotary machine. A second generation three axis machine is in the design stage which abandons mounting the vertical axes from the top, and instead… more

Load relaxation studies of zircaloy-4

Description: The results of the present work have shown (1) the load relaxation data of Zircaloy-4 in the temperature range of 200/sup 0/C to 385/sup 0/C can be represented by the phenomenological model based on Hart's plastic equation of state; (2) the room temperature load relaxation data reflect the effects of deformation twinning; (3) at higher temperatures the load relaxation data suggest the contribution of grain boundary sliding; and (4) the effects of strain aging can be identified based on the load… more

Mechanics of micromachining

Description: The current state of machining theory is examined for relevance to micromachining. Of particular interest are those features of the theory which are important to optical surface finishes and surface characteristics. The relation of transverse strain or side flow to the nature of the machining marks is one example of interest. Correlation with measurements of machining parameters and surface finishes is given.

Water reuse achieved by zero discharge of aqueous waste

Description: Plans for zero discharge of aqueous waste from ERDA's nuclear weapons plant near Denver are discussed. Two plants - a process waste treatment facility now under construction, and a reverse osmosis desalting plant now under design, will provide total reuse of waste water for boiler feed and cooling tower supply. Seventy million gallons of water per year will be conserved and downstream municipalities will be free of inadvertent pollution hazards.

Assessment of radiological impact of the inactive uranium-mill tailings pile at Salt Lake City, Utah

Description: One of the largest inactive uranium mill tailings piles in the United States is located within metropolitan Salt Lake City, Utah. A radiological survey was performed at this site during the fall of 1975. A series of field and laboratory analyses were performed to characterize the spread of contamination from the tailings pile to surrounding areas. These analyses provided a basis for discussion of the important pathways for transport of radioactivity to man. Measurements of radionuclide concentr… more
