Assessment of Water Quality in Streams Draining Coal-Producing Areas in Ohio

Description: From introduction: In 1975 a project was begun to provide information on several aspects of coal hydrology in Ohio. The first phase was a reconnaissance of water-quality conditions in coal-mining regions. Phase one had two primary objectives; to document the occurrence of certain inorganic and organic constituents in waters of the coal-mining regions and to determine if the concentrations of those constituents were related to coal mining. The second phase of the project was a more detailed stu… more

Simulations of Non-Steady Flow in a Glacial Outwash Aquifer, Southern Franklin County, Ohio

Description: From introduction: This report is part of an overall study to model the flow and to describe the water-quality characteristics of the glacial outwash aquifer in part of the Scioto River basin. The purpose of this report is to describe the development of a transient-state digital-computer model and the simulated water-level resulting from anticipated withdrawal by up to six new municipal wells.

Flood of June 13-15, 1981, in the Blanchard River Basin, Northwestern Ohio

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this report is to provide meteorologic and hydrologic data in more detail than could be given in the monthly and annual summary publications of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, or the USGS.

Availability of Water from Limestone and Dolomite Aquifers in Southwest Ohio and the Relation of Water Quality to the Regional Flow System

Description: Abstracts: The largest ground-water supplies from the 150 to 450-foot thick carbonate-rock aquifer in southwest Ohio are available in a 2,800 square-mile area on the crest and eastern flank of the Cincinnati arch. Well production in the high-yield area is mainly from the Newburg zone, a permeable stratum in the lower part of the Bass Island group. A structure contour map on the top of the Lockport Dolomite shows that the Newburg zone conforms to the configuration of the Cincinnati arch. The che… more

Time of Travel of Solutes in Selected Reaches of Ohio Streams, 1973 and 1975

Description: Abstract: The basic field data for time-of-travel measurements on six streams in Ohio are presented. In general, additional data on stream cross sections, tributary inflows, and chemical analyses for mainstream and tributary flows are given.

Water Use in Ohio 1975

Description: From introduction: This report summarizes estimates of Ohio water use for 1975. These figures are revisions of data which were compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Circular, "Estimated Water Use in the United States, 1975" (Murray and Reeves, 1976). In that circular, water-use figures were aggregated for the state of Ohio as a whole, and for the U.S. Water Resources Council's Great Lakes and Ohio River hydrologic regions.

Water-Quality Assessment of Rattlesnake Creek Watershed, Ohio

Description: From abstract: Chemical and biological water quality in Rattlesnake Creek basin, Ohio, are evaluated. The data include field and laboratory data for eight sites during August 1976-August 1977 and summaries of earlier (1972-76) data.

Time of Travel of Solutes in Selected Reaches of the Sandusky River Basin, Ohio: 1972 and 1973

Description: Abstract: A time of travel study of a 106-mile (171-kilometer) reach of the Sandusky River and a 39-mile (63-kilometer) reach of Tymochtee Creek was made to determine the time required for water released from Killdeer Reservoir on Tymochtee Creek to reach selected downstream points. In general, two dye sample runs were made through each subreach to define the time-discharge relation for approximating travel times at selected discharges within the measured range, and time-discharge graphs are pr… more

A Model for Flow Through a Glacial Outwash Aquifer in Southeast Franklin County, Ohio

Description: Abstract: A glacial outwash aquifer of about 70 square miles in the Scioto River valley southeast of Columbus, Ohio, was modeled as a potentially major source of water. The model was constructed from available hydrologic data: Records of precipitation, well hydrographs, well logs, two ground-water level surveys, and analyses of six aquifer tests. Utilizing this array of data, water levels determined from a series of steady-state simulations of different hydraulic conductivity distributions were… more

Time of Travel of Solutes in the Tuscarawas River Basin, Ohio August and September, 1974

Description: Abstract: A time-of-travel study was made on a 106-mile reach of the Tuscarawas River to determine average velocity and dispersion into five subreaches, and a fluorescent dye used as a tracer material. At about the 50-percent flow-duration level, time-of-travel of peak concentration was 137 hours.

Limnology of Selected Lakes in Ohio-1975

Description: From abstract: Water-quality reconnaissance by the U.S. Geological Survey and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, to evaluate the status of Ohio's lakes and reservoirs was begun in 1975 with studies of 17 lakes. Spring and summer data collections for each lake included: profile measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance; field and laboratory analyses of physical, biological, chemical (nutrient), and organic characteristics; concentrations of major and minor ch… more

Digital Model Simulation of the Glacial-Outwash Aquifer at Dayton, Ohio

Description: From introduction: The specific purpose of the digital model study was to develop a better understanding of the aquifer system and to show how it responds to various pumping stresses. The scope of the study was to develop a single-transmissive-layer model that could be used to evaluate the effects proposed ground-water development schemes would have on water levels.

Measurement of the Reaeration Coefficients of the North Fork Licking River at Utica, Ohio by Radioactive Tracers

Description: Abstract: Reaeration coefficients of the North Fork Licking River at Utica, Ohio were measured by the radioactive-tracer method. The tests were conducted on a 2.1-mile reach on September 23 and October 7, 1981, during low-flow conditions. Krypton-85 gas and tritium were the radioactive tracers, which were used in conjunction with rhodamine-WT dye. The reaeration coefficients determined on September 23 were 3.09 days^-1 (subreach 1-2) and 3.32 days^-1 (subreach 2-3). On October 7, the values wer… more
