Carbon Sequestration in Reclaimed Mined Soils of Ohio Quarterly Report

Description: Assessment of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration potential of reclaimed minesoils (RMS) is important for preserving environmental quality and increasing agronomic yields. The mechanism of physical SOC sequestration is achieved by encapsulation of SOM in spaces within macro and microaggregates. The experimental sites, owned and maintained by American Electrical Power, were characterized by distinct age chronosequences of reclaimed minesoils and were located in Guernsey, Morgan, Noble, and M… more

Measurement of the Reaeration Coefficients of the North Fork Licking River at Utica, Ohio by Radioactive Tracers

Description: Abstract: Reaeration coefficients of the North Fork Licking River at Utica, Ohio were measured by the radioactive-tracer method. The tests were conducted on a 2.1-mile reach on September 23 and October 7, 1981, during low-flow conditions. Krypton-85 gas and tritium were the radioactive tracers, which were used in conjunction with rhodamine-WT dye. The reaeration coefficients determined on September 23 were 3.09 days^-1 (subreach 1-2) and 3.32 days^-1 (subreach 2-3). On October 7, the values wer… more

Assessment of Water Quality in Streams Draining Coal-Producing Areas in Ohio

Description: From introduction: In 1975 a project was begun to provide information on several aspects of coal hydrology in Ohio. The first phase was a reconnaissance of water-quality conditions in coal-mining regions. Phase one had two primary objectives; to document the occurrence of certain inorganic and organic constituents in waters of the coal-mining regions and to determine if the concentrations of those constituents were related to coal mining. The second phase of the project was a more detailed stu… more
