Animals in Nursing Homes: State Guideline Development

Description: Companion animals can reduce the elderly person's feelings of isolation and stress, provide tactile stimulation, offer a means of socialization and establish a nonthreatening, nonjudgmental relationship. As an adjunct to treatment, pet therapy may serve to ease the transition from community to nursing home and assist residents in establishing relationships with animals, caregivers, and other residents.
