Report on discussion of Pinex experiment with J-12 group at Los Alamos

Description: Plans for participation in Operation Hardtack include performance of a Pinex experiment on three barge-based events: Nutmeg, Hickory, and Juniper. The J-12 group at Los Alamos has been planning for a group of similar experiments. Inclusion of Pinex in the Hardtack diagnostic program occurred considerably later; also, J-12 has successfully carried out two Pinex experiments during Operation Plumbbob. THE OXIDATION OF MERCURY BY NITRIC ACID

Description: The oxidation of Hg in HNC/sub 3/ was investigated. An empirical rate law, oxidation rates, and Hg species in solution were determined. A reaction mechanism based on the presence of nitrous acid can be interpreted in terms of the rate expression derived. (auth)

Dimensionally Stable Alloys. Interim Report

Description: The development of dimensionally stable alloys for high temperature reactor application is discussed. Cold pressing followed by sintering was determined to be the most satisfactory method. Evaluation of alloys by alpha - beta thermal cycling indicated the superiority of U--Mo and U--Nb alloys. Lateral Stability Investigation at Mach Numbers From 0.8 to 1.7 of Two Rocket-Boosted Models of an Airplane Configuration With a 45 Degree Swept Wing and a Low Horizontal Tail

Description: "Rocket-boosted free-flight tests of two models of an airplane configuration having a 45 degree swept wing and a low horizontal-tail position have provided lateral stability derivatives and control effectiveness data for a Mach number range from 0.8 to 1.7. The experimental lateral stability derivatives presented are corrected to rigid conditions and compared with theoretically calculated rigid derivatives. Nuclear Battery-Thermocouple Type Third Quarterly Report for July 1, 1957 to September 30, 1957

Description: A second thermoelectric generator consisting of unitized rings of thermopiles was designed and constructed. Three and four rings were asserabled into generators and tested. A maximum efficiency of 0.67% was obtained. At a DELTA T of 400 deg C, an efficienty of 0.56% was obtained; the theoretical maximum for the materials used is 0.83%. (auth)

Theoretical Determination of Low-Drag Supercavitating Hydrofoils and Their Two-Dimensional Characteristics at Zero Cavitation Number

Description: "The linearized theory of Tulin and Burkart for two-dimensional supercavitating hydrofoils operating at zero cavitation number is applied to the derivation of two new low-drag configurations. These sections were derived by assuming additional terms in the vorticity distribution of the equivalent airfoil; in particular, three and five terms were considered. A simplified calculation of the location of the cavity boundary streamline for arbitrary configurations is also presented" (p. 1).

Effects of Internal-Area Distribution, Spike Translation, and Throat Boundary-Layer Control on Performance of a Double-Cone Axisymmetric Inlet at Mach Numbers From 3.0 to 2.0

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of initial subsonic diffusion rate, variable geometry, and throat boundary-layer control on the performance of an axisymmetric double-cone inlet. Major gains in performance at higher Mach numbers were obtained with boundary-layer control in the form of a ram scoop at the throat. Results regarding the effect of internal-area distribution, effect of spike translation, and effect of throat boundary-layer control are provided.

Utilization of the Surface Tension of Liquid Metals in Making High-Vacuum Seals

Description: Abstract: "The free energy (surface tension) of a liquid film can withstand atmospheric pressure across a maximum theoretical gap of 10-(-3) cm between solids if the liquid wets and bridges the sides of the gap continuously. HRT-CP: Results of Solids Dissolution Tests

Description: A dissolution cycle in the chemical plant consists of refluxing with 10.8 M H2SO4 for 4 hours followed by refluxing for a like period with 4 M acid.
