Preliminary Tests of a Buffet Stall-Warning Device on a 1/5-Scale Model of the Republic XP-84 Airplane

Description: "During the first flight tests of the Republic XP-84 airplane it was discovered that there was a complete lack of stall warning. A short series of development tests of a suitable stall-warning device for the airplane was therefore made on a 1/5-scale model in the Langley 300 MPH 7- by 10-foot tunnel. Two similar stall-warning devices, each designed to produce early root stall which would provide a buffet warning, were tested" (p. 1).

Preliminary investigation of the pressure fluctuations in the wakes of two-dimensional wings at low angles of attack

Description: Report presenting a measurement of the magnitudes of pressure fluctuations in the turbulent wakes of restrained two-dimensional airfoils at transonic speeds. Measurements indicated that the total-pressure fluctuations occurred only within the wake. Results regarding the magnitude of pressure oscillation in the wake, effect stream-angle fluctuations in the wake, and frequencies of pressure oscillation on the wing and in the wake are provided.

Estimate of the Effect of Poisons on Critical Concentration

Description: If a highly-enriched reactor is operated without removal of fission products, these poisons will build up so that it is necessary to increase the fuel concentration to maintain criticality at the original operating temperature. Thus the fuel which must be added over a period of time is greater than that burned up by the amount necessary to increase the concentration. To determine the magnitude of this concentration change, calculations have been made for a highly enriched reactor operating at 5… more

Generalized Theory for Seaplane Impact

Description: "The motions, hydrodynamic loads, and pitching moments experienced by V-bottom seaplanes during step-landing impacts are analyzed and the theoretical results are compared with experimental data. In the analysis, the primary flow about the immersed portion of a keeled hull or float is considered to occur in transverse flow planes and the concept of virtual mass is applied to determined the reaction of the water to the motions of the seaplane. The entire immersion process is analyzed from the ins… more

A pressure-distribution investigation of a fineness-ratio-12.2 parabolic body of revolution (NACA RM-10) at M = 1.59 and angles of attack up to 36 degrees

Description: Report presenting a pressure-distribution investigation of a parabolic body of revolution with a fineness ratio of 12.2, which was performed in the 4- by 4-foot supersonic tunnel at Mach number 1.59 and Reynolds number 3.6 x 10(sub 6), based on body length, for a range of angles of attack. Results regarding basic pressures, aerodynamic coefficients, asymmetrical pressures, comparison of experimental and theoretical pressures, artificial roughness, section coefficients, and body coefficients are… more

Thrust Loading of the NACA 3-(3)(05)-05 Eight-Blade Dual-Rotating Propeller as Determined From Wake Surveys

Description: Report presenting wake-survey measurements of the thrust loading of the NACA 3-(3)(05)-05 eight-blade dual-rotating propeller for several blade angles and forward Mach numbers. The results indicate that the changes in the lift-curve slopes of the airfoils have a secondary influence in producing large decreases in thrust loading that occur at high Mach numbers. The changes in thrust loading also occur at different rates at different locations on the propeller.

Aerodynamic characteristics in pitch of a series of cruciform-wing missiles with canard controls at a Mach number of 2.01

Description: From Introduction: "This paper presents the results of tests made at a Mach number of 2.01 to determine the effect of body length on the longitudinal characteristics (zero roll angle) for five complete configurations as well as for the bodies alone, the bodies plus wings, and the bodies plus canard surfaces. The experimental results are compared with some simple theoretical estimates."

Pile Neutron Production Field Curves Calculated Using the UCRL Differential Analyzer

Description: A set of 69 pile yield curves for the production of plutonium, americium, and curium isotopes in a neutron flux of 5 x 1014 cm-2 sec-1 is given. The differential analyzer of the University of California Radiation Laboratory was used in obtaining the curves. The curves are given also on log-log plots for comparison.

Preliminary investigation of the effects of several seeker-nose configurations on the longitudinal characteristics of a canard-type missile at a Mach number of 1.60

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effect of several seeker-nose configurations on the static longitudinal stability, canard control characteristics, and lift and drag at Mach number 1.60 of a canard-type ramjet missile with 70 degree delta canard control surfaces and 70 degree delta wings. The tests indicate that, for the most part, the configurations tested exhibited no significant difference in static longitudinal stability or horizontal-canard control effectiveness.

Rocket-Model Investigation to Determine the Hinge-Moment and Normal-Force Properties of a Full-Span, Constant-Chord, Partially Balanced Trailing-Edge Control on a 60 Degree Clipped Delta Wing Between Mach Numbers of 0.50 and 1.26

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-powered research model to determine the hinge-moment and normal-force characteristics of a trailing-edge control on a delta wing between Mach numbers of 0.50 and 1.26. The hinge-line location of 40 percent control chord satisfactorily reduced the high hinge moments associated with plain flap-type controls. Results regarding hinge moments and normal force are provided.
