Expanded Content Envelope For The Model 9977 Packaging

Description: An Addendum was written to the Model 9977 Safety Analysis Report for Packaging adding a new content consisting of DOE-STD-3013 stabilized plutonium dioxide materials to the authorized Model 9977 contents. The new Plutonium Oxide Content (PuO{sub 2}) Envelope will support the Department of Energy shipment of materials between Los Alamos National Laboratory and Savannah River Site facilities. The new content extended the current content envelope boundaries for radioactive material mass and for de… more

Multi-strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 130 GeV

Description: The transverse mass spectra and mid-rapidity yields for {Xi}s and {Omega}s plus their anti-particles are presented. The 10% most central collision yields suggest that the amount of multi-strange particles produced per produced charged hadron increases from SPS to RHIC energies. A hydrodynamically inspired model fit to the spectra, which assumes a thermalized source, seems to indicate that these multi-strange particles experience a significant transverse flow effect, but are emitted when the sys… more

Using multicast in the global communications infrastructure for group communication

Description: International Monitoring System (IMS) stations and the International Data Centre (IDC) of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization generate data and products that must be transmitted to one or more receivers. The application protocols used to transmit the IMS data and IDC products will be CD-x and IMS-x and the World Wide Web (WWW). These protocols use existing Internet applications and Internet protocols to send their data. The primary Internet appl… more

Liquid fuel reformer development.

Description: At Argonne National Laboratory we are developing a process to convert hydrocarbon fuels to a clean hydrogen feed for a fuel cell. The process incorporates a partial oxidation/steam reforming catalyst that can process hydrocarbon feeds at lower temperatures than existing commercial catalysts. We have tested the catalyst with three diesel-type fuels: hexadecane, low-sulfur diesel fuel, and a regular diesel fuel. We achieved complete conversion of the feed to products. Hexadecane yielded products … more

HRT-CP: Results of Solids Dissolution Tests

Description: A dissolution cycle in the chemical plant consists of refluxing with 10.8 M H2SO4 for 4 hours followed by refluxing for a like period with 4 M acid. In each of 3 tests in which 370 gram batches of simulated corrosion product solids were subjected to two dissolution cycles using 820 excess acid more than 99.6 of the solid material was dissolved (based on the amount of undissolved material collected). In another test using one dissolution cycle and 820 excess acid 99.5 of the solids material was … more

Increased oil production and reserves from improved completion techniques in the Bluebell Field, Uinta Basin, Utah. Quarterly technical progress report, April 1, 1996--June 30, 1996, 11th Quarter of the project

Description: The objective of this project is to increase oil production and reserves in the Uinta Basin by demonstrating improved completion techniques. Low productivity of Uinta Basin wells is caused by gross production intervals of several thousand feet that contain perforated thief zones, water-bearing zones, and unperforated oil-bearing intervals. Geologic and engineering characterization and computer simulation of the Green River and Wasatch formations in the Bluebell field will determine reservoir he… more

A Perturbation Method for Solving the Angle Dependent Nucleon-Meson Cascade Equations

Description: A method is described for obtaining an approximate solution to the equations describing a nucleon-meson cascade by using the angular dependence of the secondary particle production kernels as a perturbation. The usefulness of the method lies in the fact that in a slab geometry the equations that must be solved numerically are essentially the same as those that are used in the straight-ahead approximation and have been solved previously. Sensitivity study of reliable, high-throughput resolution metricsfor photoresists

Description: The resolution of chemically amplified resists is becoming an increasing concern, especially for lithography in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regime. Large-scale screening and performance-based down-selection is currently underway to identify resist platforms that can support shrinking feature sizes. Resist screening efforts, however, are hampered by the absence of reliable resolution metrics that can objectively quantify resist resolution in a high-throughput fashion. Here we examine two high-… more

Portable vacuum object handling device

Description: The disclosure relates to a portable device adapted to handle objects which are not to be touched by hand. A piston and bore wall form a vacuum chamber communicating with an adaptor sealably engageable with an object to be lifted. The piston is manually moved and set to establish vacuum. A valve is manually actuable to apply the vacuum to lift the object.

Transient response of single-domain Y-Ba-Cu-O rings to pulsed magnetic fields.

Description: Shielding current limits and magnetic diffusion characteristics have been measured at 77 K for a set of YBCO single-domain rings. These were fabricated from melt-textured cylindrical YBCO monoliths that were densified to nearly 100%, and then oriented from a single seed. The rings were surrounded by a drive coil that can, under pulse conditions, achieve applied magnetic fields in excess of 1 T and induce currents in excess of 50 kA. Simultaneous magnetic characterization with a Rogowski coil an… more

Letter on intent to build an off-axis detector to study {nu}{sub mu}{yields}{nu}{sub e} oscillations with the NuMI neutrino beam. Version 6.0

Description: The question of neutrino masses is of fundamental importance. Neutrino oscillations seem to be the only tool available to us to unravel the pattern of neutrino masses and, perhaps, shed some light on the origin of masses in general. The NuMI neutrino beam line and the MINOS experiment represent a major investment of US High Energy Physics in the area of neutrino physics. the forthcoming results could decisively establish neutrino oscillations as the underlying physics mechanism for the atmosphe… more
