The Column Strength of Two Extruded Aluminum-Alloy H-Sections

Description: "Extruded aluminum-alloy members of various cross sections are used in aircraft as compression members either singly or as stiffeners for aluminum-alloy sheet. In order to design such members, it is necessary to know their column strength or, in the case of stiffeners, the value of the double modulus, which is best obtained for practical purposes from column tests. Column tests made on two extruded h-sections are described, and column formulas and formulas for the ratio of the double modulus to Young's modulus, based on the tests, are given" (p. 289).

Characteristics of a standard tube

Description: Transmitted herewith are three charts showing the temperatures attained at various points of the slugs in a typical tube of a flat ended pile. These charts are based on the latest information available to us on September 15, 1944. They are valid for any power load when the water rate is 21.0 gpm, whatever may be the inlet temperature of the cooling water. A simple method is provided for correcting the curves for deviations in water rate from 21 gpm. There is appended a detailed explanation of their derivation and of the evaluation of the constants involved in their construction. The current discovery that the pile will be self-poisoned by transient fission products means that the true temperature curves will be somewhat flatter than those here presented.

The Production of Beryllium by the Metallothermic Reduction of Beryllium Fluoride

Description: Report discussing "the production of beryllium by the metallothermic reduction of its fluoride...Charges of BaF2 and Mg reacted smoothly when heated by induction in graphite crucibles and on continued heating the metal and slag separated fairly well. It was found that an addition of CaCl2 to the top of the charge facilitated the separation a great deal. Very clean, massive metal has been produced by this procedure."

Free-Spinning-Tunnel Tests of a 1/18-Scale Model of the Fairchild XNQ-1 Airplane, TED No. NACA 2398

Description: :Spin tests have been performed in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a 1/18-scale model of the Fairchild XNQ-1 airplane. The spin and recovery characteristics of the model were determined for the normal gross-weight loading and for two variations from this loading - center of gravity moved rearward and relative mass distribution increased along the fuselage. These tests were performed for two vertical-tail plan forms. The investigation also included simulated pilot-escape tests and rudder-force tests" (p. 1).

A General Small-Deflection Theory for Flat Sandwich Plates

Description: "A small-deflection theory is developed for the elastic behavior of orthotropic flat plates in which deflections due to shear are taken into account. In this theory, which covers all types of flat sandwich construction, a plate is characterized by seven physical constants (five stiffnesses and two Poisson ratios) of which six are independent. Both the energy expression and the differential equations are developed. Boundary conditions corresponding to simply supported, clamped, and elastically restrained edges are considered" (p. 1).

Effect of High-Lift Devices on the Low-Speed Static Lateral and Yawing Stability Characteristics of an Untapered 45 Degrees Sweptback Wing

Description: Memorandum presenting a wind-tunnel investigation made in the stability tunnel to determine the effects of lift flaps on the static lateral stability derivatives and the yawing derivatives of an untapered 45 degree sweptback wing at low speeds. Results regarding straight flow and yawing characteristics are provided.

Full-Scale Investigation of an Equilateral Triangular Wing Having 10-Percent-Thick Biconvex Airfoil Sections

Description: Report discussing an investigation of the low-speed characteristics of a wing with a triangular plan form, 60 degrees of sweepback at the leading edge, and 10-percent-thick biconvex airfoil sections. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the effects of semispan and full-span leading-edge and trailing-edge flaps on the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of the wing and the effects of a vertical fin on the lateral stability characteristics.

Investigation of Performance of Single-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor Using NACA 5509-34 Blade Section

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation conducted to study the performance of a single-stage axial-flow compressor using blades with an NACA 5509-34 airfoil section. Static- and total-pressure, total-temperature, and flow-angle surveys were taken in the compressor inlet and outlet and between blade rows to study the overall performance and individual blade-row performance.

Performance investigation of can-type combustor 2: water injection at various stations in combustor

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the maximum quantity of water that could be injected either into or ahead of a single can-type combustor without reducing the attainable combustor-outlet temperature below the value required for engine operation and without the appearance of liquid water at the combustor outlet. Water was injected from spray nozzles at four different stations along the combustor.

Electronics Accomplishment Report

Description: Group 10 - The following items were shipped to Scioto Laboratory: 6 Thyratron Heater Controls (TR-1-A), 2 Switch Boxes (for P & E), 1 Log Amplifier (AM-1); 1 Pulse Generator (PG-1-B). The following are completed, tested, and awaiting transportation: 3 Two-Input B-wall Mixers (MX-2-A), 1 Pulse Generator (PG-1-B),1 Regulation Checker (RC-1) (for plating control power supplies), 1 Preamplifier (AM-2) (for Berkeley decimal scaler). The following are under construction: 6 Pulse Generators (PG-1-B) (for Health Division) (EO-508) 90%, 10 Switch Boxes (8 for P & E, Scioto, 2 for P& E, "T" Building) 85%, 6 Junction Boxes (for P&E, "T" Building, EO-486) 90%, 2 Four-Input G. M. Mixers. One on EO-17, one from Unit III. The mixers have been finished and tested for some time. The scalers (Nuclear Instrument Model 161-G) have just been received and are being modified for use with the mixers. A prototype preamplifier for the Berkeley decimal scaler was constructed and tested. Group 11 - A special pulse generator having output pulses fixed in time, and adjacent pulses variable in time with respect to the fixed pulse is under development. An initial mock-up of such a generator showed promise in that the variable pulses could be shifted in time, but there was considerable "jitter" of the pulses. A method of obtaining more positive triggering of the pulse generating circuits is being worked out. Group 12 - Three service calls were made during this period for defective G. E. induction heaters used by Group 31. Group 14- Routine counting this period included 5990 counts.
