Patch characteristics and domestic dogs differentially affect carnivore space use in fragmented landscapes in southern Chile

Description: This article's aim is to determine whether (a) the spatial use of domestic dogs increases with habitat destruction, and (b) domestic dogs and habitat destruction drive the spatial use of native carnivores in a heavily degraded agricultural landscape. Conclusions highlight that domestic dog occupancy was positively correlated with habitat loss and future conditions of increased fragmentation and habitat loss will likely increase the potential contact between domestic dogs and native carnivores.

Acoustic Metasurface-Aided Broadband Noise Reduction in Automobile Induced by Tire-Pavement Interaction

Description: Article demonstrating a technique utilizing acoustic metasurfaces (AMSes) with high reflective characteristics using relatively lightweight materials for noise reduction without any change in mechanical strength or weight of the tire. The proposed design can significantly reduce the noise arising from tire–pavement interaction over a broadband of acoustic frequencies under 1000 Hz and over a wide range of vehicle speeds using a negative effective dynamic mass density approach.

[Diego Velázquez bronze equestrian sculpture by artist Constance Whitney Warren on UNT's campus]

Description: Photograph of the Diego Velázquez bronze equestrian sculpture by artist Constance Whitney Warren on UNT's campus. The ten foot sculpture depicts the Spanish artist (who lived from 1599-1660) sitting on top of a horse that has its rigth front hoof lifted. Velázquez is holding on to the reins of the horse and is depicted wearing an equestrian outfit reminiscent of his time such as a large hat with a feather, a cape, gloves, and riding boots. A painters palette and paint brushes are also depicted and included on the sculptures large base at the foot of Velázquez atop the horse. The sculpture appears to be a green color due to the oxidization of the bronze over time. The back of Sycamore Hall and large green trees are visible in the background. The sculpture is surrounded by two bushes with bright pink cherry blossoms. The plaque situated on the base of the sculpture reads "Equestrian Portrait of Diego Velázquez, Constance Whitney Warren, Gift of the Harlan Crow Family."
