Calculation of Effective Resonance Integrals

Description: Effective resonance integrals for fuel and fertile materials were calculated as a function of materials concentration in homogeneous media. For the fissile materials (U-235, Pu-239), results were obtained from multigroup, monte-carlo, and statistical model calculations. For the fertile materials (U-238), results were obtained from monte-carlo and multigroup calculations and were compared with experimental results.

Effect of R.F. System on Betatron Oscillations

Description: The change in betatron frequency due to the focusing action of the radiofrequency cavities is calculated. It is found that at injection the fractional change in radial betatron frequency for particles with small phase oscillations is given by -0.025V, where V is the maximum r-f voltage per turn in Mev. There is an equal and opposite change in the vertical betatron frequency. Also it is proven, in a general manner, that the damping rate of the betatron oscillations is independent of the nature o… more

Water Hammer Tests Loop Able Pwp Land Reactor, 1957

Description: "This report essentially substantiates the preliminary data reported ln WAPD-PWR-PMF-898. The Primary Coolant System of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, comprises four loops. Each of the loops has one pump to control the mass rate of water flow-. A series of tests were conducted on the cooling system of the PWR land reactor to determine the magnitude and duration of the water hammer pressure wave resulting from check valve closure. The water hammer pressure wav… more

Problems in Accountability Measurements Associated with the Interim Chemical Processing Program

Description: Available knowledge of precision limits in S.S. accountability measurements and/or calculations by reactor and chemical processing groups is surveyed and summarizes. Experience in comparisons of reactor (production and research) calculations versus chemical plant accountability measurements is also reported. A general tentative conclusion is that available precisions (+/- 0.54 to +/- 0.78% ) in chemical plant measurements is also reported. A general tentative conclusion is that available precis… more

Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media

Description: A wet collection system for aerosols has been developed using fibrous media. Tests show the performance to be in accord with recently developed theory of collection by fibrous media. The effects of varying aerosol particle size, particle density, and gas velocity have indicated that inertial impaction is the primary collection mechanism. Three-year operating experience on several full scale plant installations shows reliable performance.

Test Results on a Heater-Cooler Unit for the ORR In-Pile Loop

Description: Tests have been completed on a combination heater-cooler unit for use in in-pile loops designed to operate in beam hole HN-1 of the ORR facility. The unit is designed to use air-water mixtures as the coolant. the coolant flows through a spiral of 3/8-inc. diameter tubing cast in aluminum around the 3/8-in. IPS loop pipe. four 1000-w calrod-type electric heating elements are cast into the aluminum, along with the cooling coils to provide loop heating.

Low Attack Rates Observed in Toroid Tests with 28 Micron 1600 C Fired ThO2 Spheres

Description: Results of previous toroid tests with 28 micro 1600 fired ThO2 spheres are analyzed. Four possible explanations for the essentially zero attack rates are offered and discussed: peculiar motion of toroids or some unknown wall effect; rotational hydrodynamic forces cushioning the particle impact; the bed was not in suspension and not sliding over the walls of the toroid; round particles are not as erosive to oxide film surface as sharp pointed particles.

Spectrographic Analysis of Normal Human Tissue from Miami, Florida

Description: All tissues included in this report were received from Miami, Florida and the majority are from Jackson memorial Hospital. They were collected, ashed and analyzed according to the methods described in ORNL-CF-57-2-2. The average value of the concentration for each element in a tissue is the average of the concentrations in only those samples of the tissue which contained the element. For example, if, of 25 lives analyzed, only 10 contained lead, the average for lead in liver is the average of t… more

Methods of Collection, Preparation and Spectrographic Analysis of Human Tissues

Description: To determine the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of a radionuclide which may be ingested or inhaled with exceeding accepted levels of exposure tot he human body, it is necessary to know the average normal concentration of the natural element in the various tissues of the body. Any element may be ingested or inhaled as the element or as a compound. Although nearly all elements have been observed in living tissue, few quantitative observations had been made before 1950. Preliminary studie… more

Thorex Pilot Plant ; System for Concentrating Second Uranium Cycle Product

Description: A system for concentrating uranyl nitrate solutions was designed and installed in the Thorex Pilot Plant. A total of 16,060 g of uranium was concentrated in the system in 68 batch runs. A total of 14,400 g total uranium (14.180 g U/sup 233/) was recovered as product suitable for shipment. Uranium loss to the evaporator condensate was 0.03% of the total uranium processed. The material balance across the system was 98.4%. The average concentration of uranium in the evaporator feed solution was 29… more

Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending June 10, 1955

Description: The development of the reactor layout is continuing. New features that have been incorporated because of stress, fluid flow, or fabricability considerations include an elliptical fuel expansion tank, a rounded dome to enclose the top of the reactor, a newly designed sodium pump impeller, and other related items. Recently completed heat exchanger tests yielded consistent data from which a series of heat exchangers is being designed. The most promising of these will be chosen for the ART.

Accuracy of Relaxation Length Measurements

Description: We consider here the accuracy of relaxation lengths measured during the water-uranium lattice experiments. Since such an analysis for all measurements would take a great deal of time, we have applied it to just one lattice. This one (2:1 water-to-metal ratio) was chosen completely at random.

Neutron Age in Graphite-Water Lattices.

Description: The Fermi age of thermal neutrons in a lattice containing both water and graphite in some sort of weighted average of the age in water and in graphite independently, with correction for volumes of non-moderating elements or voids. The correct weighting function has been in question during design calculations for the NPR. This paper presents a very simple and direct approach to the problem, resulting in a weighting equation which seems to be theoretically sound. Unfortunately, simple theories ca… more

The Decontamination of Reactor Cooling Water with Aluminum

Description: The discharge of cooling water from the Hanford reactors introduce radioactive contaminants to the Columbia River. These materials may subsequently bring about exposure to human populations either through the direct use of the water for sanitary purposes or transfers of the radioisotopes into the food chains. It is therefore desirable to keep to a minimum the amounts of radioisotopes released to the river.
