Uniformly Reactive Uranium Dioxide from a Single Oxidation-Reduction Cycle

Description: Abstract: By use of a modified thermobalance and reactor as the primary experimental tool for sample preparation and evaluation, a process has been developed by which parent uranium feed materials of a widely variable reactivity and composition may be converted to a uniformly reactive uranium dioxide.

Materials for Fluorine Generator Anode Assemblies

Description: Corrosion of anode assembly materials in fluorine generators is pronounced, therefore, selection of the proper materials for construction is important. Several metals and alloys have been tested for corrosion resistance when anodic in a fluorine test cell. In general, copper, copper alloys and magnesium alloys offer the best corrosion resistance.

Experimental Evaluation of a Sodium-to-Sodium Heliflow Heat Exchanger at Temperatures up to 1200°F

Description: Abstract: Because of the outstanding heat transfer efficiency of sodium, it is necessary in sodium-cooled reactors to consider and attempt to prevent the occurrence of adverse stresses as a result of thermal transients in the system.

Surface Motion from an Underground Detonation

Description: Abstract: Surface and near-surface acceleration and strain were measured on a deep underground nuclear burst (Rainier Shot; 900 ft; 1.7 kt) to permit extrapolation of results to nuclear detonations of other yields under different test or employment conditions.

Test of Buried Structural-Plate Pipes Subjected to Blast Loading

Description: From abstract: Two 20-ft-long 7-ft-diameter 10-gauge structural-plate pipes, having longitudinal joints with eight bolts per foot, were buried and tested in the Smoky event of Operation Plumbbob at predicted pressure levels of 195 and 265 psi. The depth of burial was 10 ft over the crown of the pipe.

Structural Response and Permanent Displacement Measurements

Description: Measurements and visual observations made during the Hardtack II series of underground shots provide basis for conclusions regarding shock-resistant design of protection for cavities in rock and qualitative prediction of permanent displacements in rock due to nuclear detonations. Vibration measurements on blast-resistant construction in soil provided non-nuclear test results which apply to shock resistant design. With varying soil cover, the compressive mode predominated in arch structures and … more

Response of Protective Vaults to Blast Loading

Description: A reinforced-concrete steel-plate-lined vault and steel vault door were exposed to a nuclear detonation (shot Priscilla, about 37 kt, balloon suspended, at 700 ft) at the predicted 75-psi peak incident pressure level (1150 ft from Ground Zero). The vault was designed by the ultimate-strength theory to utilize the additional strain energy available in the elastoplastic and plastic ranges. Flexural and thrust capacities were determined, and shear capacity was computed. It was established that abo… more

Feed Materials Production Center Summary Technical Report: July 1, 1963-September 30, 1963

Description: From abstract: The temperature of molten uranium was measured indirectly by an infrared radiation pyrometer. The emissivities of graphite and molten uranium were determined, and a series of equations correlating pyrometer readings with melt temperatures was derived.

Interfacial Tension Measurement on A1(NO₃)₃ - H₂O - HNO₃ - Dibutyl Cellosolve System

Description: This report discusses two methods used for experimental determination of the interfacial tension of an immisible aqueous-organic system where the density of the organic phase is less than that of the aqueous phase. The methods discussed are the falling drop method and the Donnan modification/rising drop method.
