Ground Tests of a Radial Air-Cooled Engine to Correct a Poor Circumferential Pressure-Recovery Distribution

Description: "This report presents the results of the tests of a power-plant installation to improve the circumferential pressure-recovery distribution at the face of the engine. An underslung "C" cowling was tested with two propellers with full cuffs and with a modification to one set of cuffs. Little improvement was obtained because the base sections of the cuffs were stalled. A set of guide vanes boosted the over-all pressures and helped the pressure recoveries for a few of the cylinders" (p. 1).

Effect of Current Design Trends on Airplane Spins and Recoveries

Description: Memorandum presenting a concept in aircraft design, which states that provision of a rolling moment in the direction of the turning rotation will be very effective, and may be necessary, for termination of any spin obtained. Current research indicates that wing sweep, use of heavy jet and rocket engines, in the fuselage, and long fuselage nose lengths are the primary causes of the changes in the nature of the spin and in the requirements for recovery.

Effects of wing elasticity on the aerodynamic characteristics of an airplane configuration having 45 degrees sweptback wings as obtained from free-flight rocket-model tests at transonic speeds

Description: Flight testing at transonic speeds occurred on two rocket-propelled models of an airplane configuration with 45 degree sweptback wings of aspect ratio 4 and with different stiffnesses. Longitudinal stability, lift, and drag characteristics were determined by analysis of the response of the models to disturbances in pitch. Results regarding lift, model vibrations, aeroelastic effects on lift, static stability, damping in pitch, and drag are provided.
