The Dielectric Tube Resonator : a Slow-Wave, Open Boundary, Dielectric Resonator for the Generation and Measurement of Millimeter and Sub-Millimeter Wavelength Electromagnetic Radiation. Technical Report No. 2

Description: The yet unsolved submillimeter wavelength problem, namely, providing a source of high-power, coherent, monochromatic signal frequencies in the region 300 to 3000 kmc/s, together with suitable measuring techniques and devices, is considered. The dielectric tube resonator is proposed to deal with this problem. It consists of a hollow, circularly cylindrical tube of dielectric material suitably terminated at its ends by sufficiently large metal end walls and constitutes a slow-wave, open-boundary,… more

A Report on the Kinematics of High Energy Electron Scattering

Description: "A convenient summary is given of useful formulas on the kinematics of high energy electron scattering together with a derivation of the relevant formulas for transforming from the center of mass to the laboratory system such parameters as scattering cross sections. The formulas derived hold for any two- body collision: the approximation (m = 0) employed for the electron scattering calculations is rigorously true for the elastic scattering of photons."

Survey of Processing Methods for the Production of Thorium Metal from Monazite Sand and Thorium Nitrate

Description: Cost estimates for two types of Th producing plants are offered. One utilizes Th(NO3)4 as raw material, the other uses monazite sand. Final processing schemes and plant designs are not fixed, so the estimates represent maximum costs. Recommendations for research and development of Th producing methods are given.

Summary of Research on Experimental Refractory Bodies of High-Melting Nitrides, Carbides, and Uranium Dioxide

Description: Abstract: A procedure for the preparation of the nitrides and carbides of several metals and the preparation of the refractory bodies from them is described. The investigation shows that reasonably strong and dense bodies can be prepared from these materials as well as from UO₂. Evidence showing the tendency toward instability at high temperatures of Be₃N₂, TaN, and ThN is presented. Evidence is also given indicating that the hexagonal structure reported by others for TaN is actually that for T… more

Possible Process Alternatives for Converting Recovered Uranyl Nitrate to Uranium Hexafluoride

Description: The uranium recovery processes which are in operation or under construction at the present time--TBP, Redox and Purex--yield an aqueous uranyl nitrate solution as the recovered uranium product. For conversion of this recovered uranium to UF6 for feed to the gaseous diffusion plants, the uranyl nitrate in the solution is concentrated with or without prior organic stripping, calcined to UC3, reduced to UO2 with hydrogen, hydro-fluorinated to UF4 with RF, and finally fluorinated to UF6 with eleme… more

The Determination of Thorium in Uranium-Thorium Alloys, Using Cupferron

Description: Technical report describing that the use of controlled amounts of carbonate, acting both as complexing agent buffer led to a fairly satisfactory procedure for the determination of Th in Th-U alloys, using cupferron. The alloy, dissolved in NHO2, in the presence of HF, is treated with H2SO4 and the mixture is evaporated in SO2 fumes. The solution is diluted and (NH4)2CO2 is added. Th is precipitated from this solution with cupferron. The precipitate is weighed as ThO2 after ignition. An accura… more

Flame Spectra of Vanadium, Niobium, Rhenium, Titanium and Molybdenum

Description: Abstract Line spectra of vanadium, niobium, titanium, molybdenum and rhenium of sufficient intensity to allow detection at the 1–10 p.p.m. level can be excited in fuel-rich, oxy-acetylene flames. For the strongest lines of tungsten, the sensitivity of detection is 90 p.p.m. Weak lines of zirconium, hafnium, osmium, tantalum and uranium are also observed in these flames. Recordings of the spectra are given along with wavelength tables of the strongest lines.

Dependence of Thermal Utilization and Resonance Escape Probability Upon Fuel Element Density in D₂O Cooled and Moderated Systems

Description: Abstract: "The effect of variation in fuel element density upon f, p in a D2O cooled and moderated lattice of cylindrical fuel elements is investigated. The CP-3 lattice is chosen as a reference. The effect of a source term in the fuel element is considered. f, p are calculated as functions of "a", the ratio of the modified fuel element density to the original (fuel only) density. Curves showing f(a), p(a) are included. It is concluded that a 1 per cent decrease in the product, f(d), p(a) is no… more

The Lindemann and Grüneisen Laws

Description: The Lindemann assumption of direct contact of neighboring atoms at fusion is replaced by the criterion that melting occurs when the root-mean-square amplitude of thermal vibration reaches a critical fraction ρ, presumed the same for all isotropic monatomic solids, of the distance of separation of nearest-neighbor atoms. The Debye-Waller theory of the temperature dependence of the intensity of Bragg reflection of x-rays is used, without further assumptions, to derive a generalized Lindemann law… more

A Transistorized Pulse Height Analyzer for Gamma Spectroscopy

Description: From abstract: "A scintillation detector has a pulse height output which is a linear function of the energy of impinging gamma radiation. A pulse height analyzer system determines the amplitude distribution of this train of pulses. The system also displays this information graphically in a form which is convenient for further analysis."

Drilling in the Flatirons Locality, Monument Valley, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had s… more
