Small-Scale Transonic Investigation of the Effects of Partial-Span Leading-Edge Camber on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 50 Degree 38' Sweptback Wing of Aspect Ratio 2.98

Description: "A small-scale transonic investigation of two semispan wings of the same plan form was made in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel through a Mach number range of 0.70 to 1.10 and a mean-test Reynolds number range of 745,000 to 845,000 to determine the effects of partial-span leading-edge camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of a swept-back wing. This paper presents the results of the investigation of wing-alone and wing-fuselage configurations of the two wings; one, was an uncamber… more

The Uranium-Nitrogen-Carbon System

Description: The ternary system uranium- nitrogen- carbon has been studied at 1800 deg C under vacuum and under a 1atm. nitrogen pressure. There is complete solid solubility between UN and UC, and essentially no solid solubility of nitrogen in UC/sub 2/ or U/sub 2/C/sub 3/ or of carbon in U/sub 2/N/su b 3/. At 1800 deg C the two-phase field, U(C,N) and UC/sub 2/, and the three-phase field, U(C,N), UC/ sub 2/, and C, exist in vacuum or argon. At 1 atm. of nitrogen, the uranium nitrides are more stable than t… more

Toward Net Energy Buildings: Design, Construction, and Performance of the Grand Canyon House

Description: The Grand Canyon house is a joint project of the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S. National Park Service and is part of the International Energy Agency Solar Heating and Cooling Programme Task 13 (Advanced Solar Low-Energy Buildings). Energy consumption of the house, designed using a whole-building low-energy approach, was reduced by 75% compared to an equivalent house built in accordance with American Building Officials Model Energy Code and the Home Energy Rating System … more

Data quality objectives for TWRS privatization phase 1: tank waste transfer control

Description: The Phase 1 privatization contract (DOE-RL 1996) requires that the Project Hanford Management Contractors, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, Richland Operations Office, deliver waste feed in appropriate quantities and composition on schedule. The Feed Process Management Team (FPMT) was created with responsibility for establishing requirements, identifying and recommending baseline change control, assuring configuration management of tank contents (e.g., feed pedigrees), and requiring … more

Decay Modes Of Charged [Sigma] Hyperons

Description: Apparent [Sigma] hyperon decay events in a large emulsion stack of 240 9" x 12" pellicles have been classified into those judged to have occurred at rest and those in flight. Of 36 decay events at rest, 21 secondaries were observed to be protons of about 1675 microns range. Of the events decaying in flight, 23 were decays into protons and 46 were decays into near-minimum secondaries. Attempts have been made to trace the tracks of 35 of the lightly ionizing secondaries; the results of this effor… more

Radioactivity Associated With Underground Nuclear Explosions

Description: The detonation of a contained or partially contained nuclear explosion is accompanied by the deposition of a large fraction of the energy in the form of high-temperature, high-pressure regions. The nature of the surrounding medium, the time-temperature history, and the time of cavity collapse or venting determine the extent to which undesirable nuclides such as Sr/sup 90/ and Cs/sup 137/ will appear outside a fused insoluble matrix and be available to ground water or to the atmosphere. The move… more

The Role of Creep in the Gas-Pressure-Bonding Process

Description: A theoretical method of determining the time, temperature, and pressure required for pressure bonding was proposed and then evaluated experimentally. The analysis considered only the mechanical deformation of the bonding surfaces induced by the external pressure. It was postulated that such deformations obey the power law for steady creep. The applicaiion of the law to the closure of thick-walled aluminum cylinders under gas pressure was investigated. The behavior was compared with ihat predict… more

Neutron Detection with a Cryogenic Spectrometer

Description: Cryogenic calorimeters are used for x-ray detection because of their exquisite energy resolution and have found application in x-ray astronomy, and the search for dark matter. These devices operate by detecting the heat pulse produced by ionization in an absorber cooled to temperatures below 1 K. Such temperatures are needed to lower the absorber's heat capacity to the point that the deposition of even a few eV results in a measurable temperature excursion. Typical absorbers for dark matte… more

THE PROBLEM OF MEASURING THE ABSOLUTE YIELD OF 14-Mev NEUTRONS BY MEANS OF AN ALPHA COUNTER

Description: The assumptions used to derive the total neutron yield per detected alpha particle (from the D-T reaction) which were derived in an earlier report are reexamined in the light of additional experimental information. It is concluded that for an alpha counter at 90 deg to the incident beam direction the assumptions introduce practically no difficulties. Therefore, for precise monitoring in the absence of certain target information it is recommended that this configuration be used. For counters at … more

Federal Credit Reform: Implementation of the Changed Budgetary Treatment of Direct Loans and Loan Guarantees

Description: On November 5, 1990, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-508) was signed into law. P.L. 101-508 added Title V to the Congressional Budget Act. Title V, also called the Federal Credit Reform Act of 1990 (the FCRA), changed how the unified budget reports the cost of federal credit activities (i.e., federal direct loans and loan guarantees). Before the fiscal year 1992 (FY1992), for a given fiscal year, the budgetary cost of a new direct loan or loan guarantee was the net cash … more

Coupled Multi-Electrode Investigation of Crevice Corrosion of AISI 316 Stainless Steel

Description: Close packed coupled multi-electrodes arrays (MEA) simulating a planar electrode were used to measure the current evolution as a function of position during initiation and propagation of crevice corrosion of AISI 316 stainless steel. Scaling laws derived from polarization data enabled the use of rescaled crevices providing spatial resolution. Crevice corrosion of AISI 316 stainless steel in 0.6 M NaCl at 50 C was found to initiate close to the crevice mouth and to spread inwards with time. The … more

Gravitational-Electromagnetic Torus Models of the Elementary Particles

Description: Abstract: "A torus model of the elementary particles is suggested in which the electron and proton are made stable by gravitational forces derived from the electromagnetic field. It is suggested that the gravitational forces for the unstable particles, presumably the mesons, are not sufficient to keep the torus from expanding in the direction of its large radius. Rest energy zero can be achieved, presumably for photons and neutrons, when the gravitational energy and electromagnetic field energy… more

Investigation of the Jet Effects on a Flat Surface Downstream of the Exit of a Simulated Turbojet Nacelle at a Free-Stream Mach Number of 2.02

Description: "An investigation at a free-stream Mach number of 2.02 was made to determine the effects of a propulsive jet on a wing surface located in the vicinity of a choked convergent nozzle. Static-pressure surveys were made on a flat surface that was located in the vicinity of the propulsive jet. The nozzle was operated over a range of exit pressure ratios at different fixed vertical distances from the flat surface. Within the scope of this investigation, it was found that shock waves, formed in the ex… more

Flammable gas tank waste level reconciliation for 241-SX-105

Description: Fluor Daniel Northwest was authorized to address flammable gas issues by reconciling the unexplained surface level increases in Tank 241-SX-105 (SX-105, typical). The trapped gas evaluation document states that Tank SX-105 exceeds the 25% of the lower flammable limit criterion, based on a surface level rise evaluation. The Waste Storage Tank Status and Leak Detection Criteria document, commonly referred to as the Welty Report is the basis for this letter report. The Welty Report is also a part … more
