Postranslational Modifications of P53: Upstream Signaling Pathways.

Description: The p53 tumor suppressor is a tetrameric transcription factor that is posttranslational modified at >20 different sites by phosphorylation, acetylation, or sumoylation in response to various cellular stress conditions. Specific posttranslational modifications, or groups of modifications, that result from the activation of different stress-induced signaling pathways are thought to modulate p53 activity to regulate cell fate by inducing cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, or cellular senescence. Fluidized bed incineration system for U. S. Department of Energy Defense Waste, July--December 1977

Description: A fluidized-bed incineration facility has been designed for installation at the Rocky Flats Plant to develop and demonstrate the process for the combustion of transuranic waste. The unit capacity will be about 82 kg/hr of combustible waste. The combustion process will utilize in situ neutralization of acid gases generated in the process. The equipment design is based on data generated on a pilot scale unit and represents a scale-up factor of nine. Building modifications are complete and equipme… more

Altitude-ignition limit of a turbojet engine using a condenser-discharge ignition system

Description: The altitude-ignition limits of a condenser-discharge ignition system installed on a turbojet engine were determined at a flight Mach number of 0.6 using 1.1-pound Reid vapor pressure fuel. Ignition was possible up to an altitude of 55,000 feet with 4.8 joules per spark and 6 sparks per second.

RESRAD connection for facilitating MARSSIM analysis : an illustration of applying the OpenLink concept.

Description: The focus of this work is to more tightly integrate tools traditionally used in MARSSIM (Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual) final status survey design. MARSSIM provides guidance on appropriate methodologies for establishing that dose or risk-based standards for a site contaminated with radionuclides have been achieved. RESidual RADioactive (RESRAD) codes are used by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other federal agencies to con… more

Building America Best Practices Series, Volume 9: Builders Challenge Guide to 40% Whole-House Energy Savings in the Hot-Dry and Mixed-Dry Climates

Description: This best practices guide is the ninth in a series of guides for builders produced by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Program. This guide book is a resource to help builders design and construct homes that are among the most energy-efficient available, while addressing issues such as building durability, indoor air quality, and occupant health, safety, and comfort. With the measures described in this guide, builders in the hot-dry and mixed-dry climates can achieve homes that h… more

A CORRELATION OF PULSE COLUMN LIQUID-LIQUID HEAT TRANSFER. Progress Report No. 23 on THE PERFORMANCE OF CONTACTORS FOR LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION

Description: Submitted as a thesis by William Berdell Barlage, Jr. Heat transfer studies were refined and extended to the point where the results could be generalized into a mathematical correlation valid over a reasonably wide range of variables. An extended study was made of the rate of heat transfer between benzene and water in direct contact in a pulse column, and of the operating variables which controlled the behavior. In this mode of heat transfer the benzene was dispersed as a family of droplets int… more

The distribution and contaminant exposure of Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bats in South Carolina with an emphasis on bridge surveys.

Description: Rafinesque's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii), an insectivorous mammal indigenous to the southern United States, has long been referred to as one of the least known bats in North America. Although there has been a moderate increase in the number of peer-reviewed articles published on this species in the past 6 years, the basic ecology and status of Rafinesque's big-eared bat remains largely obscure. Prior to 1996, when the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) discontinued the… more

GEO-SEQ Best Practices Manual. Geologic Carbon Dioxide Sequestration: Site Evaluation to Implementation

Description: The first phase of the GEO-SEQ project was a multidisciplinary effort focused on investigating ways to lower the cost and risk of geologic carbon sequestration. Through our research in the GEO-SEQ project, we have produced results that may be of interest to the wider geologic carbon sequestration community. However, much of the knowledge developed in GEO-SEQ is not easily accessible because it is dispersed in the peer-reviewed literature and conference proceedings in individual papers on specif… more
