Acceleration of Polarized Protons to Relativistic Energies

Description: Maintenance of polarization of polarized protons in a linear accelerator is known to be feasible. Circular accelerators present a different problem, and the investigation of the interaction of orbit dynamics and particle polarization in general is undertaken. The equation of motion of the spin vector of a charged particle in a magnetic field as formulated by Bargmann, Michel, and Telegdi is utilized in the study of depolarization for several accelerators. High values of depolarization are obtai… more

Beam Separators for Bev Particles

Description: The problem of separation of beams of particles of different masses but of the same momentum at Bev energies is the subject of a great deal of study at several high energy laboratories. In this note we shall describe the problem and tabulate a few of the cogent parameters. Frequently the student of high energy interactions is faced with a beam of miscellaneous particles coming from an accelerator. By standard techniques this beam can be rendered approximately parallel and an inch or so in diame… more

Nine-Channel Polychromator For Observation Of Time-Dependent Spectral Line Profiles

Description: The instrument (polychromator) described observes time-dependent spectral-line profiles by simultaneous measurement at nine different wavelengths of light intensity as a function of time. A cylindrical lens magnifies the dispersion of a Jarrell-Ash Model S2000 Ebert Monochromator and forms an image on a light-pipe solder. Light pipes transfer light from various sections of the image--i.e., different wavelengths--to photomultiplier tubes, and the responses are displayed on oscilloscopes. The ins… more

A Study of the Mechanism of Radiation Induced Gelation in Monomer-Polymer Mixtures

Description: "Additional mixtures of polymers and multi-unsaturated monomers have been prepared, irradiated and the gel content determined. The gel content determination of crosslinked polyolefins has been investigated in detail. The multi-unsaturated monomers used and radiation conditions applied up to this time have not given significant gel contents for polypropylene. the polypropylene resin used has been characterized by differential extraction."

Conical Refraction in Crystal Optics and Hydromagnetics

Description: When light propagates with the wave normal in the direction of an optic axis of a biaxial crystal, the usual ray theory breaks down. This phenomenon can be analyzed by means of an asymptotic solution of Maxwell's equations. The intensity is governed by a partial differential equation within the phase surfaces, instead of ordinary differential equations along rays. This example slows that light does not always propagate along rays. A similar phenomenon occurs in hydromagnetics.

Observations on the Response of Two P-NJunction Diodes to Protons

Description: The response of a two silicon p-n junction diodes has been measured for protons up to 13.3 Mev. In one case the dependence of depletion layer thickness with bias voltage was found to be T or V(0.46). The observed resolution, made up of contributions from crystal noise, beam width, and scatterer thickness, was about 1% for 9-Mev protons.

Magnetic Core Tests for Pulsed Operation at 30 Nanoseconds Pulse Width

Description: The magnetic properties of core materials ae investigated for a pulse width of 30 nanoseconds. Methods of testing which are necessitated by the sort pulse width are explained and the design of the pulser which is capable of 0.2 megawatt peak power is described. The data obtained if evaluated and presented for the various materials which were tested.

The LRL Capture-Gamma Coincidence Spectrometer

Description: Abstract. A fast-slow coincidence scintillation spectrometer for gamma-gamma cascade measurements following thermal neutron absorption in nuclei is now in operation at the Livermore 1-megawatt pool-type reactor. Design features of the spectrometer and experimental techniques in its use are discussed with particular emphasis on the application of the recently introduced sum-coincidence method for analysis of capture-gamma double cascades. A new technique for the determination of added neutron bi… more

The Enhancement of Acidity of Very Weak Acids in Tertiary Butyl Alcohol

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The acidity of a solution of acid, HX, and salt, MX, is affected by both the concentration of X- and M+ owing to incomplete dissociation of the salt, MX. it was possible to increase the acidity of a solution of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol - tetrabutylammonium 2,6-di-tert-butylphenolate relative to a dilute solution of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide by increasing the tetrabutylammonium bromide content. This indicates that the dissociation constant of the hydroxide ba… more

Exact Semiclassical Calculations of Translational-Vibrational Energy Transfer

Description: We present "exact" calculations, by the semiclassical method, of vibrational excitation of a harmonic diatomic molecule A-B, in its ground vibrational state, upon collinear collision with an atom C. Results are compared with those of first-order quantum mechanical time dependent perturbation methods and those of purely classical methods.

Chemical Processing Department monthly report, April 1961

Description: Pu nitrate production was above revised forecast. 141 kCi Sr-90 was isolated in Purex and stored for decay; to date, 1190 kCi has been recovered from Purex wastes. Casks of Cs-137 and Sr-90 were turned over to AEC for ORNL. Production of UO{sub 3}, Pu metal buttons, and weapon component fabrication exceeded forecasts. Purex processing continued until April 14. The Purex neptunium campaign had low yield because of loss to waste system. The cartridge in the Purex co-decontamination column scrub s… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report for January 1960

Description: Production of Pu nitrate, UO{sub 3}, and unfabricated Pu metal met schedules. Decontamination performance of Purex process continued below standard. The cerium-144 cask is being redesigned. A ``powered ferret``, for driving a scintillation counter through a conduit to monitor ground activity beneath waste storage tanks, is being designed.

Console Networks for Major Computer Systems

Description: A concept for interactive time-sharing of a major computer system is developed in which satellite computers mediate between the central computing complex and the various individual user terminals. These techniques allow the development of a satellite system substantially independent of the details of the central computer and its operating system. Although the user terminals' roles may be rich and varied, the demands on the central facility are merely those of a tape drive or similar batche… more

Dependence of the Vertical Excitation Energy of Benzene on the Size and Force Constant of the Excited State

Description: Griffing1 computed the vertical excitation energy for the first electronic transition of benzene as a function of the carbon-carbon distance (rn) within the Sklar valence bond (SVB) and Goeppert-Mayer and Sklar molecular orbital (G1SMO) methods to evaluate the change on excitation of the carbon-carbon equilibrium internuclear separation (rn0) and of the corresponding stretching force constant, f. While ring expansion was correctly predicted, both methods appeared to predict that f increases on … more

Specifications for Multifunction Storage Unit Type I

Description: The Multifunction Storage Unit, Type I is a storage device capable of storing geometrical information in visual display form. The storage is accomplished by means of an electrostatic storage cathode ray tube. The Storage Unit consists of this storage tube and its associated circuitry. Associated circuitry is considered to be all circuitry required by the storage tube itself which is necessary to make the unit a self-contained storage unit. The following six external signals are all that is requ… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report for July 1960

Description: Production of Pu nitrate from separations plant during this month was below forecast. UO{sub 3} production, shipments met schedules; so did unfabricated Pu shipments. Purex plant was stopped to replace the final waste concentrator (F-11) (leak). Two Pu-U partition failures were attributed to foreign organic material in the nitric acid; the Pu product was kept within specifications by adding NaF and ANN to ion exchange feed stream. A Np recovery run was started in Redox, and dissolution was star… more
