[City Council Public Hearing - Gay and Lesbian Police Officers]

Description: Video footage from the Resource Center LGBT Collection. The 1992 Dallas City Council holds a public hearing of their constituents in regards to upholding the ban on gay men and lesbians being able to be police officers. At 2:36:48 the public hearing closes and the council begins their debate on the topic. The council eventually decides to uphold the ban. At 4:13:56, the council moves on to other items, including an item about whether or not they should continue a contract a law firm whose compl… more

SDC conceptual design: Scintillating fiber outer tracker

Description: The authors propose an all-scintillating fiber detector for the purpose of outer tracking for the SDC. The objectives of this tracking system are to: (1) provide a first level trigger for {vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar} < 2.3 with sharp p{sub T} threshold with the ability to resolve individual beam crossings; (2) provide pattern recognition capability and momentum resolution which complements and extends the capabilities of the inner silicon tracking system; (3) provide three dimensional linkage with… more

Tracer Stability and Chemical Changes in an Injected Geothermal Fluid During Injection-Backflow Testing at the East Mesa Geothermal Field

Description: The stabilities of several tracers were tested under geothermal conditions while injection-backflow tests were conducted at East Mesa. The tracers I and Br were injected continuously while SCN (thiocyanate), B, and disodium fluorescein were each injected as a point source (slug). The tracers were shown to be stable, except where the high concentrations used during slug injection induced adsorption of the slug tracers. However, adsorption of the slug tracers appeared to ''armor'' the formation a… more

Fuel processing for fuel cell powered vehicles.

Description: A number of auto companies have announced plans to have fuel cell powered vehicles on the road by the year 2004. The low-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells to be used in these vehicles require high quality hydrogen. Without a hydrogen-refueling infrastructure, these vehicles need to convert the available hydrocarbon fuels into a hydrogen-rich gas on-board the vehicle. Earlier analysis has shown that fuel processors based on partial oxidation reforming are well suited to meet the size an… more

A Hydrologic-geophysical Method for Characterizing Flow and Transport Processes Within The Vadose Zone

Description: The primary purpose of this project was to employ two geophysical imaging techniques, electrical resistivity tomography and cross-borehole ground penetrating radar, to image a controlled infiltration of a saline tracer under unsaturated flow conditions. The geophysical techniques have been correlated to other more traditional hydrologic measurements including neutron moisture measurements and induction conductivity logs. Images that resulted during two successive infiltrations indicate the deve… more

Estimating Adipose Tissue in the Chest Wall Using Ultrasonic and Alternate /sup 40/K and Biometric Measurements

Description: The percentage of adipose (fat) tissue in the chest wall must be known to accurately measure Pu in the human lung. Correction factors of 100% or more in x-ray detection efficiency are common. Methods using simple /sup 40/K and biometric measurement techniques were investigated to determine the adipose content in the human chest wall. These methods predict adipose content to within 15% of the absolute ultrasonic value. These new methods are discussed and compared with conventional ultrasonic mea… more

A high-throughput contact-hole resolution metric for photoresists:Full-process sensitivity study

Description: The ability to accurately quantify the intrinsic resolution of chemically amplified photoresists is critical for the optimization of resists for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) Iithography. We have recently reported on two resolution metrics that have been shown to extract resolution numbers consistent with direct observation. In this paper we examine the previously reported contact-hole resolution metric and explore the sensitivity of the metric to potential error sources associated with the experim… more

Crystallization of a member of the recFOR DNA repair pathway, RecO, with and without bound oligonucleotide

Description: RecFOR proteins are important for DNA repair by homologous recombination in bacteria. The RecO protein from Thermus thermophilus was cloned, purified and characterized for its binding to oligonucleotides. The protein was crystallized alone and in complex with a 14-mer oligonucleotide. Both crystal forms grow under different crystallization conditions in the same space group, P3121 or P3221, with almost identical unit cell parameters. Complete data sets were collected to 2.8 Angstrom and 2.5 Ang… more

Distributive Distillation Enabled by Microchannel Process Technology

Description: The application of microchannel technology for distributive distillation was studied to achieve the Grand Challenge goals of 25% energy savings and 10% return on investment. In Task 1, a detailed study was conducted and two distillation systems were identified that would meet the Grand Challenge goals if the microchannel distillation technology was used. Material and heat balance calculations were performed to develop process flow sheet designs for the two distillation systems in Task 2. The pr… more

Facility Effluent Monitoring Plan for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Balance-of-Plant Facilities

Description: The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Pacific Northwest) operates a number of Research and Development facilities for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on the Hanford Site. According to DOE Order 5400.1, a written environmental monitoring plan is required for each site, facility, or process that uses, generates, releases, or manages significant pollutants or hazardous materials. Facility Effluent Monitoring Plans (FEMPs) have been developed on the Hanford Site to document the facility ef… more

Ultrashort-pulse lasers machining

Description: A new type of material processing is enabled with ultrashort (t < 10 psec) laser pulses. Cutting, drilling, sculpting of all materials (biologic materials, ceramics, sapphire, silicon carbide, diamond, metals) occurs by new mechanisms which eliminate thermal shock or collateral damage. High precision machining to submicron tolerances is enabled resulting in high surface quality and negligible heat affected zone.

Search for the top quark with CDF

Description: During the 1988--89 Tevatron Collider run the CDF detector has collected data for an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1}. The sample has been used to search for the top quark in several topologies. Preliminary results show that a top mass below 89 GeV is excluded at the 95% confidence level, thus extending the limit of 77 GeV previously published by CDF. 14 refs., 8 figs.

Non-neutral plasma science issues for heavy ion drivers

Description: The main non-neutral plasma science issue in heavy ion drivers is focusability at the target. Considerations of the intrinsic six-dimensional phase volume at the beginning of the accelerator, and the required six dimensional phase volume required at the target, suggests there exists accelerator designs in which there is a reasonably large leeway to allow adequate focusability. Space-charge effects may also be controlled by properly designed neutralization methods, or large beam numbers, or high… more
