Interaction of intense heavy ion beams with various targets

Description: Recently it has been proposed that heavy ion beams could be accelerated with sufficient power and focus to generate shock heating and create hot plasmas in targets of various materials. This preliminary study addresses two aspects of this process: first, the energy deposition by the primary beam, and second, the problem of energy deposition by secondary nuclear reaction particles. For the purpose of discussion it is assumed that beams of 600 MeV/amu uranium (143 GeV total) are focussed on vario… more

A Proposal to Study Small Angle Proton-Deuteron Scattering

Description: We propose an extension of the present p-p small angle scattering experiment to a measurement of p-d scattering using a deuterium gas jet. In 400 hours of beam time we will measure as a function of energy; (a) the slope of the small angle p-d scattering; (b) the real part of the forward p-d scattering; (c) the total p-d cross section; and (d) the coherent diffraction dissociation of protons on deuterons. No new apparatus is required or need be installed for the performance of this experiment.

Systematics of neutron-induced fisson cross sections over the energy range 0. 1 MeV to 15 MeV and at 0. 0253 eV

Description: Previous studies by Behrens have provided evidence of systematic behavior in neutron-induced fission cross sections in the incident neutron energy range 3 to 5 MeV. Recently measured fission cross-section ratios revealed this behavior. In this report, these measurements and those of others are used to illustrate the behavior of fission cross sections over the neutron energy range 0.1 MeV to 15 MeV. Similar trends are seen at 0.0253 eV, as revealed by thermal cross-section measurements. 12 figur… more

Reference design for the standard mirror hybrid reactor

Description: This report describes the results of a two-year study by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and General Atomic Co. to develop a conceptual design for the standard (minimum-B) mirror hybrid reactor. The reactor parameters have been chosen to minimize the cost of producing nuclear fuel (/sup 239/Pu) for consumption in fission power reactors (light water reactors). The deuterium-tritium plasma produces approximately 400 MW of fusion power with a plasma Q of 0.64. The fast-fission blanket, which is fuel… more

Report on process design studies of a tritium recovery process using dual temperature exchange with metal hydrides

Description: Studies were made of the process characteristics of a plant to decontaminate tritiated water using dual temperature exchange with VH/sub 2/. Feed to the plant consists of 300 kg/day on water containing 1 Ci/kg of tritium. A reference design was developed based on a decontamination factor of 10/sup 2/ and 10 kg/day of enriched product. This design requires a total of 48 ideal separation stages, 22 stages in the enriching section and 26 stages in the stripping section. Only low grade heat is requ… more

Evaluation, design, development and delivery of a 1200 kV prototype termination. First technical progress report, September 28, 1978-January 31, 1979

Description: The conceptual design and material study, Task 1 of this project is nearing completion. The primary objective of problem definition, in the form of a preliminary design specification, is complete. Several innovative concepts are being explored and compared. By the end of Task 1, the many alternative concepts will be narrowed considerably so that model studies of the most promising candidates may commence.

Multiple three-decision rules for 2/sup k/-factorial simple effects. Technical report No. 8

Description: One of the problems confronted in the investigation of environmental health and in biological research more generally is the fact that organisms often respond to combinations of treatments in ways which are not predictable from the way they respond to each of these taken separately. One air pollutant may, for example, disable the respiratory tract's self cleaning mechanisms and thereby increase its sensitivity to the effects of other pollutants. It is important that laboratory experiments be ab… more

Nuclear and chemical safety analysis: Purex Plant 1970 thorium campaign

Description: The purpose of this document is to discuss the flowsheet and the related processing equipment with respect to nuclear and chemical safety. The analyses presented are based on equipment utilization and revised piping as outlined in the design criteria. Processing of thorium and uranium-233 in the Purex Plant can be accomplished within currently accepted levels of risk with respect to chemical and nuclear safety if minor instrumentation changes are made. Uranium-233 processing is limited to a rat… more

Wind tunnel test of 1/30 scale heliostat field array model. Test report

Description: From 9 January through 20 January 1978, Honeywell conducted a wind tunnel test on a 1/30 scale partial heliostat field. The heliostats were per Honeywell's design developed under the 10 megawatt central receiver pilot electrical power plant subsystem research experiment contract. Likewise, the scaled section of the field geometry duplicated the proposed circular layout. Testing was conducted at the Georgia Institute of Technology's 9 foot subsonic tunnel. The objective of the test was… more

LMFBR safety. 2. Review of current issues and bibliography of literature, 1970--1972

Description: This report discusses the current status of liquid-metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) development and one of the principal safety issues, a hypothetical core-disruptive accident (HCDA). Bibliographic information on worldwide LMFBRs relative to the development of the breeder reactor as a safe source of nuclear power is presented for the period 1970 through 1972. The bibliography consists of approximately 1620 abstracts covering early research and development and operating experiences leading up … more

Tritium Systems Test Facility

Description: This TSTF proposal has two principal objectives. The first objective is to provide by mid-FY 1981 a demonstration of the fuel cycle and tritium containment systems which could be used in a Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor for operation in the mid-1980's. The second objective is to provide a capability for further optimization of tritium fuel cycle and environmental control systems beyond that which is required for the EPR. The scale and flow rates in TSTF are close to those which have been pr… more
