Temperature-Induced Stresses in Solids of Elementary Shape

Description: Report discussing how solids subjected to non-uniform temperature change develop internal stresses determined by, (1) the temperature distribution within the solid, and (2) certain physical constants of the material. For two varieties of heating, the equations determining stress have been put in convenient form for practical use, and tables of certain temperature functions show how to determine stresses in a slab, in a cylinder, or in a sphere subjected to either of two modes of heating. The te… more

Vibration-Rotation Structure in Absorption Bands for the Calibration of Spectrometers From 2 to 16 Microns

Description: Reports discussing bands of common gases that have been tabulated and remeasured wherever necessary from 2 to 16 microns to obtain an accuracy of about 0.03 cm-1 throughout the region and to provide good calibrating points at frequent intervals. Some 600 rotation-vibration lines are illustrated in 20 spectrograms and wavenumbers are listed in companion tables with considerable intercomparison with worthy data obtained in other laboratories. The absorption bands were remeasured or calibrated by … more

A catalog of ideas for underground yield determination

Description: Because of the persistent problem of convenient determination of underground yield, Certain `electromagnetically` oriented ideas in this area are summarized. They all require much more detailed study and evaluation, although one or two of them are inexpensive enough to perhaps warrant an empirical test. Methods discussed are: Vertical sounding of the Ionosphere; The electromagnetic `Magnetic Bubble` scheme; Non-resonant scattering; Resonant scattering; and The gravitational pulse.

Containment Technical Note No. 4: Centaur radiation measurements

Description: This report discusses measurements of the radiation levels in the Centaur stemming materials which were made 260 ft. and 360 ft. from the device and at the surface 560 ft. from the device. The measurements were made in the fill in the casing. The radiation levels are provided. the material reaching the counters is fractionated due to its filtering through the fill. It can be assumed that the major components are the rare gases with perhaps some contribution from the halogens. The decay rate of … more

Evaluation of reduction of I.D. defects in I and E tubing with various billet I.D.: Experiment Number U-11

Description: It has been thoroughly documented in previous Bridgeport Brass Company reports that a problem exists in the production of HAPO I and E ``O`` size slugs via the extrusion route due to an excessive number of rejects for I.D. seams. As a result of a previous short-run experiments, it was suggested that smaller I.D. billets be employed, thus reducing the reduction ratio on the I.D. It was thought that this factor may contribute to the seam formation in the extreme flow demanded of the metal. It was… more

Production test authorization: 011 HDS and ALSI fuel performance monitoring

Description: Much useful information has been gained from this program, leading to improvements and additions to non-destructive testing equipment, improved fuel quality, and a generally better understanding of fuel performance. The original objectives of the program have been met -- at least to the extent that such information can now be effectively used. However, other aspects of the program have a continuing value. Visual examination and dimensional data obtained routinely on production fuels have been a… more

Irradiation Effects on Massive Uranium Mono-Carbide

Description: The results of examinations of UC compounds having nominal compositions of uranium-4.6, -4.8, and 5.0 wt. % carbon after irradiation to burnups of from 400 to 15,000 Mwd/t of uranium are given. Density changes were small. varying from a minimum of 0.3% to a maximum of about 2.5%. Cracking occurred in all specimens; however. it can probably be largely attributed to thermal stresses and to oxidation. after decapsulation. of NaK entrapped in microcracks. Depletion of carbon appears to be occurring… more

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Materials at High Strain Rates. Part 4. Experimental and Theoretical Analysis of Plastic Impacts on Short Cylinders

Description: The effects of strain rate on the stress-strain characteristics of copper and lead were studied by measuring both stress and strain as functions of time using short cylindrical specimens supported at one end on a modified Hopkinson pressure bar and impacted at the other end by a steel projectile. Corresponding stresses and strains were computed according to an elementary nonstrain-rate theory (sometimes referred to as the von Karman theory) in which the dynamic stress-strain curve is assumed to… more
