A Flight Investigation of the Lateral Control Characteristics of Short Wide Ailerons and Various Spoilers With Different Amounts of Wing Dihedral

Description: This report presents the results of flight tests made to determine the lateral control characteristics of short wide ailerons and spoilers, as a consequence of the promise shown in wind-tunnel tests by these devices as means of obtaining lateral control, particularly at angles of attack above the stall. Several forms of spoilers, front-hinge, rear-hinge, plain retractable, and saw-tooth retractable were tested alone and in combination with the ailerons. The tests were made with several differen… more

Temperature moments vs poison moments

Description: The excess reactivity available in an operating pile is absorbed in poison columns and horizontal rods. The temperature distribution of the pile is determined by the relative strengths and locations of the poison columns and the configuration of control rods used. A method for adjusting poison columns and rods to improve upon the pile`s temperature distribution is given in Document {number_sign}7-2654, ``Procedure for Improving Temperature Distribution via Rods and Columns,`` Wheeler and Menegu… more

Final report on Production Test No. 105-245-P -- Effectiveness of cadmium coated splines

Description: This report discussed cadmium coated splines which have been developed to supplement the regular control rod systems under emergency shutdown conditions from higher power levels. The objective of this test was to determine the effectiveness of one such spline placed in a tube in the central zone of a pile, and of two splines in the same tube. In addition, the process control group of the P Division asked that probable spline requirements for safe operation at various power levels be estimated, … more

Wind-tunnel investigation at low speed to determine aerodynamic properties of a jettisonable nose section with circular cross section

Description: Report presenting the aerodynamic properties of a model of a jettisonable nose section with a circular cross section as determined at low speed from an investigation in the 20-foot free-spinning tunnel. The results indicated that the aerodynamic characteristics of the nose were greatly affected by proximity to the fuselage. Even for a stabilized nose, it may be necessary to eject the nose forward forcibly in order to prevent high accelerations along the backbone of the pilot.

Critical mass studies of plutonium solutions

Description: The chain reacting conditions for plutonium nitrate in water solution have been examined experimentally for a variety of sizes of spheres and cylinders. The effects on the critical mass of the displacement of hydrogen and the addition of poisons to the fuel were measured in water tamped and bare reactors. In this report the data obtained in the investigation is presented graphically and in tables. Some preliminary analysis has been made yielding the results: (i) the absorption cross-section of … more

A Study of the Fabrication Failures for Zirconium and Zircaloy-2 Process Tubes and of the Annealing and Cold Rolling of Zircaloy-2

Description: A study of the fabrication failures for zirconium and zircaloy-2 process tubes was made. In the tube reducing operation, a non-uniform reduction in area for the cross section was found to be a major cause of failure. In annealing studies, a cycle of 2 hours at 820 deg C in vacuum followed by furnace cooling produced the greatest ductility of extruded zircaloy-2 for the annealing treatments studied. The ductility of cold worked and annealed zircaloy-2 was found to be superior to that of extruded… more

Direct Interaction Neutrons from 14-Mev Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Description: Abstract: "Neutron nonelastic cross sections measured at different detector biases have been used to determine the cross sections for inelastically scattering 14 Mev neutrons into 9- to 14-Mev energy range. The cross section for producing these high energy neutrons, which may be attributed to direct interaction processes, is roughly 10% of the nonelastic cross section, for all elements. A comparison is made with data of Coon and co workers, who measured angular distributions for the same high-… more
