Manipulating microRNA miR408 enhances both biomass yield and saccharification efficiency in poplar

Description: Article describes how the conversion of lignocellulosic feedstocks to fermentable sugar for biofuel production is inefficient, and most strategies to enhance efficiency directly target lignin biosynthesis, with associated negative growth impacts. The authors demonstrate, for both laboratory-and field-grown plants, that expression of Pag-miR408 in poplar significantly enhances saccharification, with no requirement for acid-pretreatment, while promoting plant growth.

Finding new friends and revisiting old ones – how plant lipid droplets connect with other subcellular structures

Description: Article talks about how the number of described contact sites between different subcellular compartments and structures in eukaryotic cells has increased dramatically in recent years, which has substantially reinforced the well-known premise that these kinds of connections are essential for overall cellular organization. The authors discuss contact sites involving plant lipid droplets (LDs), including LD-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) connections that mediate the biogenesis of new LDs at the ER, LD… more

Recurrent urinary tract infection and estrogen shape the taxonomic ecology and function of the postmenopausal urogenital microbiome

Description: Article describes how postmenopausal women are severely affected by recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI). The authors perform shotgun metagenomics and advanced culture on urine from a controlled cohort of postmenopausal women to identify urogenital microbiome compositional and function changes linked to rUTI susceptibility.

Records of Parochlus steinenii in the Maritime Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions

Description: This article provides the summary of the reports of the geographical distribution in the Maritime Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions of Parochlus steinenii (Gercke, 1889) (Diptera, Chironomidae), the only flying insect occurring naturally in the Antarctic continent. This database was developed as one of the main objectives of two Chilean-funded research projects addressing understanding the effects of climate change on sub-Antarctic and Antarctic insects.

Thymoquinone overcomes chemoresistance and enhances the anticancer effects of bortezomib through abrogation of NF-κB regulated gene products in multiple myeloma xenograft mouse model

Description: Article investigates whether thymoquinone (TQ), a bioactive constituent of black seed oil, could suppress the proliferation and induce chemosensitization in human myeloma cells and xenograft mouse model. Overall, the results demonstrate that TQ can enhance the anticancer activity of bortezomib in vitro and in vivo and may have a substantial potential in the treatment of MM.
