[Letter from Bettie Franklin and Matilda Dodd to Sis and Mr. Moore, March 17, 1879]

Description: Matilda had received and written back already, but hasn't heard anything from them yet. She says that they are doing well, but the county is sick with pneumonia. They have been gardening in the dry weather, but it might frost. She doesn't expect any peaches because of the bad weather. She should finish her quilt by tomorrow. Mrs. Nay died and Peat Wallace lost is youngest son. She is afraid to leave her house at night because of wild hogs. She hopes they are well and asks that they write back s… more

Pressure distribution over an NACA 23012 airfoil with a slotted and a plain flap

Description: Report presents the results of pressure-distribution of an NACA 23012 airfoil equipped with a slotted flap and with a plain flap conducted in the 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel. A test installation was used in which the 7-foot-span airfoil was mounted vertically between the upper and lower sides of the closed test section so that two-dimensional flow was approximated. The pressures were measured on the upper and lower surfaces at one chord section both on the main airfoil and on the flaps for several… more

A simplified theoretical method of determining the characteristics of a lifting rotor in forward flight

Description: Theoretical derived expressions for the flapping, the thrust, the torque, and the profile drag-lift ratio of nonfeathering rotor with hinged, rectangular, linearly twisted blades are given as simple functions of the inflow velocity and the blade pitch. Representative values of the coefficients of each of the terms in these expressions are tabulated for a series of specified values of the tip-speed ratio. Analysis indicates that the tabulated values can be used to calculate, with reasonable accu… more

Hydrodynamic impact of a system with a single elastic mode I : theory and generalized solution with an application to an elastic airframe

Description: Solutions of impact of a rigid prismatic float connected by a massless spring to a rigid upper mass are presented. The solutions are based on hydrodynamic theory which has been experimentally confirmed for a rigid structure. Equations are given for defining the spring constant and the ratio of the sprung mass to the lower mass so that the two-mass system provides representation of the fundamental mode of an airplane wing. The forces calculated are more accurate than the forces which would be pr… more

Calibration Tests of a German Log Rodmeter

Description: A German log rodmeter of the pitot static type was calibrated in Langley tank no. 1 at speeds up to 34 knots and angles of yaw from 0 deg to plus or minus 10 3/4 degrees. The dynamic head approximated the theoretical head at 0 degrees yaw but decreased as the yaw was increased. The static head was negative and in general became more negative with increasing speed and yaw. Cavitation occurred at speeds above 31 knots at 0 deg yaw and 21 knots at 10 3/4 deg yaw.

The Effect of Rear Chine Strips on the Take-Off Characteristics of a High-Speed Airplane Fitted With NACA Hydro-Skis

Description: "Results are presented from tank take-off tests of a dynamic model of a hypothetical high-speed airplane fitted with NACA hydro-skis and having the transverse curvature of the lower rear portion of the fuselage broken by small longitudinal chine strips. For the configuration tested, both trim and resistance were considerably reduced by the addition of the strips from the speed at which the ski emerged to the speed at which the rear of the fuselage came clear of the water. The results indicate t… more

The acute radiation syndrome: A study of ten cases and a review of the problem

Description: In this report ten cases of acute radiation syndrome are described resulting from two accidents occurring at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory of unique nature involving fissionable material. These cases are described in considerable detail. The report comprises ten sections. This volume, part II of the report, is comprised of sections entitled: (1) the Biological Basis for the Clinical Response seen in the Acute radiation Syndrome, (2) Clinical Signs and Symptoms, (3) Discussion of Hematolo… more

Effect of Various Blade Modifications in Performance of a 16-Stage Axial-flow Compressor. 4 - Effect on Over-all Performance Characteristics of Decreasing Twelfth through Fifteenth Stage Stator-blade Angles 3 deg and Increasing Stator Angles in the Inlet Stages

Description: "The performance of a 16-stage axial-flow compressor, in which two modifications of unloaded inlet stages were combined with loaded exit stages, has been determined. In the first modification the exit stages were loaded by decreasing the twelfth through fifteenth stage stator angles 3 deg. as compared with the blade angles in the original compressor, and the inlet stages were unloaded by increasing the blade angles the following amounts: guide vanes and first-stage stator, 6 deg; second- and th… more

Effects of finite span on the section characteristics of two 45 degree swept-back wings of aspect ratio 6

Description: Report presenting a study of the finite-span effects on the local loading characteristics of two sweptback wings at low speed in order to provide some information about the usefulness of two-dimensional section data and span-loading theory for determining the section characteristics of a swept wing. At low values of lift coefficient, the finite-span effects were restricted to regions of the wing close to the root and tip. Results regarding the local pressure-distribution comparisons, local lift… more
