Isotopic Sources of Secondary Radiation : Interim Technical Report Covering the Period from June 15, 1958 to March 1, 1959

Description: During the first eight months of this program the emphasis has been places on experiments and calculations on the x-ray target configurations and materials. We have found, by extending the experimental information using Pm147, Kr85, and Sr90-Y90, as well as by developing the theoretical x-ray production for these sources, the approximate conditions under which isotopic sources will emit nearly monochromatic x-rays suitable for gaging and radiographic application in the 10 to 100 Kev photon ener… more

Reamed Rear Face Parker Fitting

Description: A study and tests of the feasibility and best method of reaming rear face Parker fittings has been made. Flow increase of 8 percent, based on maintaining the same front header pressure, can be obtained at B, D, and F reactors by reaming the rear Parker fittings to .610 inch and using existing rear face hardware. Tests indicate mechanical strength will not be significantly reduced, high frequency vibration will not be increased, and that methods of reaming are available.

Calcium Uranium(IV) Fluoride; Precipitation and Reduction to Metal

Description: Using ferrous ion in the presence of fluoride for reducing uranium(VI) to the four state, the salt calcium uranium (IV) fluoride can be precipitated from uranyl nitrate solutions. X-ray studies have shown that the precipitate is a true double salt and not a mixture of the two insoluble fluorides of calcium and uranium. The salt settles rapidly and can be either filtered or centrifuged. Waste losses during precipitation and washing were on the order of 2.0 and 0.4 per cent, respectively. These w… more

Proposed Clean-Up System for Carbon Steel High Temperature Recirculation System

Description: It is the purpose of this document to outline a proposed addition to the previously considered clean-up systems as a possible solution for the maintenance of high purity water. A cyclone separator system has been devised in conjunction with the water clean-up of a high temperature recirculating reactor cooling system. By utilizing such a cyclone separator system, a high quality water can be obtained in a primary coolant system made up of carbon steel components without excessive clean-up costs.

Preliminary Studies for the Separation of HD from H2 by Rectified Absorption

Description: The feasibility of rectified absorption for the recovery and purification of HD from H2 streams has been investigated. The absorbent considered was liquid nitrogen at 78 (degrees) K. The process appears to present no major engineering or operation problems. Cost calculations indicate that the process may be economically competitive with other processes. Process design was based on an estimated separation factor of 1.25 between H2 and HD in this system. Experimental work has been undertaken… more

Earth Vibrations from a Nuclear Explosion in a Salt Dome

Description: The following report presents data from the SALMON experiment, an experiment made to study the mechanics of a tamped nuclear detonation in a salt dome in terms of generated shock waves as they are propagated out of the dome and progressively through the crust and mantle of the earth. This experiment was made in the Tatum salt dome, Mississippi, October 22, 1964.

Data base management system (ADBMS) installation guide

Description: This manual provides rough guidelines to aid a programer in installing ADBMS at a computer installation. ADBMS is a set of subroutines which together form a nucleus of a CODASYL-based data base management system. The use of this system is explained in detail in ''ADBMS Users Guide'' by E.W. Berss, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Feb. 1977.

Summary of the lithium--air battery research program. [LLL-LMSC]

Description: The status of a program to determine the feasibility of a lithium--air battery (or an analog) as an automotive power source is summarized. Anticipated performance of characteristics (including efficiency and voltage) of the battery and the lithium recycling process are described. A calcium/aqueous-electrolyte combination was discovered which shows electrode behavior similar to that of Li. 2 figures, 2 tables.

Argon spill test for E706

Description: There were three different tests involved in this series. It should be stated that the purpose of the test was to determine if there should be extra precautions taken with the calorimeter vent stack. No attempt was made to do quantitative measurements. The three types of tests were diffusion tests, spills at a remote site, and a spill at the MW building. Oxygen monitors used were the standard Energy Saver type throughout. 6 figs.

Bauschinger effect in uranium. [Rarefaction waves]

Description: The Bauschinger effect (different elastic-plastic behavior upon unloading) was measured in uranium and a model of the effect developed for use in one-dimensional hydrodynamic codes. Results from plate-impact tests show that rarefaction waves in uranium can be calculated more accurately with this model. We conclude that the Bauschinger effect can be an important aspect of rarefaction waves in uranium and other materials. 8 figures. (auth)

TATB formulation study

Description: Small-scale production and mechanical properties of TATB/Kel-F 800 (92.5/7.5), a useful plastic bonded explosive, are described. TATB particles are slurried in water while adding a solvent solution of Kel-F. As the solvent is removed from the slurry at 75 to 80/sup 0/C under vacuum, the fine particles of TATB become coated with Kel-F and clump together to form granules. After drying at 80/sup 0/C the granules are pressed at 120/sup 0/C and 138 MPa (20,000 psi) to form needed shapes.

Microwave cross section of an ionized channel

Description: At normal incidence, the back scattered, forward scattered and 90/sup 0/ scattered cross sections of the beam were measured at 24 GHz for air and nitrogen at 500 torr pressure. For a single pulse, the measured radius of the beam was 4.3 mm at Z = 80 cm, whereas in a burst the radius decreased to 2.5 mm for the fifth pulse. This corresponds to a density reduction of a factor of 5 and corresponds to a channel temperature of 1200/sup 0/C. Within experimental error, the observed cross sections were… more

A White Paper Prepared for the OpenMP Architectural Review Board on DMPL: An OpenMP DLL Debugging Interface

Description: OpenMP is a widely adopted standard for threading directives across compiler implementations. The standard is very successful since it provides application writers with a simple, portable programming model for introducing shared memory parallelism into their codes. However, the standards do not address key issues for supporting that programming model in development tools such as debuggers. In this paper, we present DMPL, an OpenMP debugger interface that can be implemented as a dynamically load… more

On the Use of 233U-236U Double-Spike for TIMS Measurements of Uranium Isotopes: A Simulation Study

Description: Synthetic ion beams with instantaneous and temporal characteristics appropriate to thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) were mathematically generated and analyzed to determine the effects of using a mixed {sup 233}U-{sup 236}U spike (double-spike) in the analysis of uranium isotopes. The instantaneous beam characteristics are the intensities (e.g., counts per second) modeled with a Poisson distribution plus a component of random noise that simulates the detection processes. Several beam … more
