190-H drawdown test

Description: A discrepancy of about 1000 gpm has existed between the full-flow recorded 190, 105 and ROL flows. While past operating practices have not used the 190 or ROL flow rates for official purposes, the disquieting, though not theoretically unexplicable, differences require some quantitative resolution. On November 24, 1962, a drawdown test of the 190-H storage tanks was performed to establish the accuracy of the various flowmeters. The drawdown test of the 190 storage tanks was run at the beginning … more

An Aerodynamic Analysis of the Autogiro Rotor With a Comparison Between Calculated and Experimental Results

Description: This report presents an extension of the autogiro theory of Glauert and Lock in which the influence of a pitch varying with the blade radius is evaluated and methods of approximating the effect of blade tip losses and the influence of reversed velocities on the retreating blades are developed. A comparison of calculated and experimental results showed that most of the rotor characteristics could be calculated with reasonable accuracy, and that the type of induced flow assumed has a secondary ef… more

Aerosol Observing System (AOS) Handbook

Description: The Aerosol Observing System (AOS) is a suite of in situ surface measurements of aerosol optical and cloud-forming properties. The instruments measure aerosol properties that influence the earth’s radiative balance. The primary optical measurements are those of the aerosol scattering and absorption coefficients as a function of particle size and radiation wavelength and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements as a function of percent supersaturation. Additional measurements include those o… more

Agricultural Trade Issues in the 107th Congress

Description: The 107th Congress is considering trade issues with implications for the U.S. agricultural sector. Trade in agricultural commodities and food products affects farm income and rural employment, and it also generates economic activity beyond the farm gate. With agricultural export sales the equivalent of one-quarter of farm income, some policymakers view U.S. efforts to develop market opportunities overseas as vital to the sector’s financial health. Decisions taken by the Bush Administration, and… more

The Alkaline Method for Treatment of High Radiation Level Aluminum Wastes

Description: The method is based on caustic precipitation and centrifugation (which removes the Cs and small amounts of Sr, rare earths, Zr, Nb, and Ru). These are removed in the supernatant and run through a cation exchange column. This separates Zr-NB and Ru. The effluent is precipitated and the Zr-Nb is stored in an asphalt pit. The Ru then may be recovered from the precipitate. The precipitate from the original centrifugation is calcined, pressed and transported to a deep well.

Alloy 22 Localized Corrosion Susceptibility In Aqueous Solutions Of Chloride And Nitrate Salts Of Sodium And Potassium At 110 - 150?C

Description: Alloy 22 (a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy) is being investigated for use as the outer barrier of waste containers for a high-level nuclear waste repository in the thick unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Experiments were conducted to assess crevice corrosion of Alloy 22 in de-aerated aqueous solutions of chloride and nitrate salts of potassium and sodium in the temperature range 110-150 C (some limited testing was also conducted at 90 C). Electrochemical tests were run in n… more

Analysis of airborne radiometric data. Volume 4. MAZNAI code for gamma-ray spectral enhancement

Description: In gamma-ray spectrometry measurements, an energy distribution of gamma-rays is viewed by a spectrometer which in turn produces a data set. This data is the result of a complex detection process and generally suffers from loss of resolution due to this detection process and to statistical noise. It is the purpose of the MAZNAI computer program to remove the degrading effects of the detector, to minimize the effects of statistical fluctuations, and to construct an enhanced image spectrum that co… more
