ABWR: PL-2 Design Report

Description: From preface: This report satisfies the quarterly progress report requirements for PL-1 and PL-2 plant design work for the period ending September 30, 1960 At present time a SL-1 Core 2 is under construction. This is a replacement core for SL-1 (ALPR) and will be identical to a PL-2 core; a PL condenser is under test at the SL-1 facility; final construction plans for PL components and modules which are not site sensitive will be completed in March 1961.

An Algorithm for Construction Feasible Schedules and Computing Their Schedule Times

Description: "An algorithm for the generation of feasible schedules and the computation of the completion times of the job operations of feasible schedule is presented. Using this algorithm, the distribution of schedule times over the set of feasible schedule—or a subset of feasible schedules—was determined for technological orderings that could occur in a general machine shop. These distributions are found to be approximately normal. Biasing techniques corresponding to “first come first serve,” random choi… more

Bounce III

Description: BOUNCE III is a program which was written for the IBM-704 as part of a study of the parameters of the neutron distribution in a large thermal column. The program calculates the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of the matrix resulting from a diffusion-theory, multigroup description of the thermal neutron spectrum.

Calculated Thermal Ionization And Enthalpy of Hydrogen, Nitrogen, And Argon At One Atmosphere Pressure In The 298-20, 000'K Temperature Range

Description: The degree of dissociation and ionization and the enthalpies of hydrogen and nitrogen, and the degree of ionization and the enthalpy of argon are calculated for one atmosphere pressure and temperatures up to 20,000'K. All three gases are more than 93% ionized at 20,000'K, and have enthalpies ranging from 553 kcals for argon to 1074 and 1225 kcals, respectively, for hydrogen and nitrogen.

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit

Description: "We compute the equilibrium configuration of a collision-free plasma contained in an axially symmetric magnetic field. The plasma is characterized by a non-scalar pressure tensor which is obtained from a microscopic distribution function in a form suggested b the guiding center approximation. The solution is calculated in the limit where the ratio of the width to the length of the plasma region and the ratio of the gas to the magnetic pressure are both small. Boundary values at the midplane … more

The Irradiated Rupture Prototype (IRP) Design

Description: One of the problems involved in the design of NPR is the method to be used for decontamination, Considerable effort has been made in both laboratories and pilot plants in developing and evaluating decontamination processes under ideal conditions. Promising processes must be tested under prototypical conditions of velocity, water quality, manner of make-up, type and degree of contamination, addition of decontaminating solutions, and so on.

Magnetic Recorder for Nuclear Pulse Application : Covering the Period from February 6, 1960 to April 5, 1960

Description: Abstract: "The accuracies which can be achieved in analog recording systems are for the most part tape limited. While reasonable variations in tape speed do not directly affect the accuracy, such variations result in improper tape tensioning, which in turn results in poor head-to-tape contact. The quality of the tape transport mechanism should be such that the error introduced by improper head- to tape contact is less than tape errors. Some additional equipment is necessary in setting up a tape… more

Momentum and Heat Transfer to a Fluid Flowing Turbulently in a Pipe

Description: A mathematical model is presented for the prediction of heat transfer coefficients for fully developed turbulent flow of fluids in circular pipes by analogy to the transfer of momentum. There is also presented an empirical velocity distribution equation derived from existing experimental data for use in the analogy model. Heat transfer coefficients for fluids with Prandtl numbers ranging from 0.01 to 100 and Reynolds numbers ranging from 5x10^3 to 10^7 are presented in tabular and graphical for… more

Natural Circulation Burn Out Heat Flux For The ORR

Description: Natural circulation flow rate is calculated for the ORR core. From this flow rate, the burn out heat flux is found to be between 22,000 and 35,000 Btu/ft2-hr. It is concluded that under present conditions a positive acting after heat removal system is necessary for 30 mw operation.
