Rates of fuel discharge as affected by the design of fuel-injection systems for internal-combustion engines

Description: Using the method of weighing fuel collected in a receiver during a definite interval of the injection period, rates of discharge were determined, and the effects noted, when various changes were made in a fuel-injection system. The injection system consisted primarily of a by-pass controlled fuel pump and an automatic injection valve. The variables of the system studied were the pump speed, pump-throttle setting, discharge-orifice diameter, injection-valve opening and closing pressures, and inj… more

Metallurgical Laboratory, Chemical Research - Radiation Chemistry, Report for the Month Ending May 15, 1943

Description: Technical report that information has bee obtained on the effect of beta and gamma radiation on the electrical resistance of insulating materials The results are summarized. The recovery to original resistance values has been measured. In general, the initial rate is rapid for the first few hours; the rate then decreases sharply. Certain samples show evidence of complete recovery. Effects on mechanical properties of several plastics has also been studied. Data on gas evolution from severa… more

Analysis of Heavy Water by Equilibration

Description: Technical report discussing that the deuterium concentration of heavy water can be determined by equilibrating the water with deuterium gas in the presence of a catalyst with subsequent analysis of the equilibrated gas on the mas spectrometer. The apparatus for equilibration analyses maybe be considered in three parts: 1) apparatus for introducing the ingredients into the reaction chambers; 2) the reaction chambers; 3) the mass spectrometer for analysis of the equilibrated gas. The isotopic co… more

Interim report No. 2 on Production Test No. 105-17-P, Laboratory evaluation of proposed lubricants

Description: The lubricant (Calel A-60) used to reduce pushing forces when discharging slugs from pile tubes forms a cloudy emulsion with water. During the initial period of operation at 100 B and D areas, spillage of lubricant during discharge produced so much cloudiness in the basin water that it interfered with sorting operations. An investigation was started to see if a lubricant could be found that would effectively lubricate tubes during discharge and which would form optically clear systems when mixe… more

Compilation of Test Data on 111 Free-Spinning Airplane Models Tested in the Langley 15-Foot and 20-Foot Free-Spinning Tunnels

Description: "A compilation of free-spinning-airplane model data on the spin and recovery characteristics of 111 airplanes is presented. These data were previously published in separate memorandum reports and were obtained from free-spinning tests in the Langley 15-foot and the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnels. The model test data presented include the steady-spin and recovery characteristics of each model for various combinations of aileron and elevator deflections and for various loadings and dimensi… more

DEVELOPMENT REPORT FOR ELECTROLYTIC CELL

Description: The objective of this project was to remove impurities in the form of PbO/sub 2/ from a HNO/sub 3/ solution by electrolysis. This electrolytic cell must process up to a 15-gal. batch in a minimum of time. It is desirable that the impurity remaining after processing be less than 20 ppm. Construction and operation of the cell are described. (G.Y.)

Altitude-performance and Reynolds number investigation of centrifugal-flow-compressor turbojet engine

Description: From Introduction: "Altitude-chamber and wind-tunnel investigations of the performance of turbojet engines such as those reported in references 1 to 4 have shown that the conventional correction factors fail to generalize the engine performance variables at high altitudes. An investigation was therefore made at the NACA Lewis laboratory to determine the altitude performance of the J33-A-23 turbojet engine and to demonstrate the magnitude of departure of actual altitude performance from that pre… more
