Experimental Evaluation of Swirl Can Elements for Hydrogen Fuel Combustor

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of the performance of swirl-can combustor elements for an experimental short-length turbojet combustor utilizing hydrogen fuel at high-altitude operating conditions. Fuel was injected into each element through a tangential, sonic orifice that created a swirling fuel-air mixture within each element. Results regarding combustor blowout, combustion efficiency, outlet temperature distribution, and preliminary performance of multielement combustor are provided.

The effect of blunt-trailing-edge elevons on the longitudinal and lateral handling qualities of the semitailless airplane

Description: Report presenting a flight program using the Northrop X-4 semitailless airplane to investigate the effect on the longitudinal and lateral stability and control of thickened elevons with trailing-edge thickness one-half the control-hinge-station thickness. The investigation consisted of speed runs, wind-up turns, abrupt rudder-fixed rolls, and longitudinal pulses between a range of Mach numbers.

Stabilization of 50-Percent Magnesium - JP-4 Slurries With Some Aluminum Soaps of C(Sub 8) Acids

Description: Report presenting an exploratory investigation of three aluminum disoaps of C(sub 8) acids to determine the gelling properties and stabilizing ability in slurries of 50 percent magnesium power and JP-4 fuel. All of the soaps were found to gel the slurries satisfactorily and to exhibit adequate reproducibility of gel properties. Results regarding the soap behaviors, effects of temperature, viscosity, and formation of the gel structures are provided.

Free-Spinning-Tunnel Investigation of a 1/28-Scale Model of the North American FJ-4 Airplane

Description: Report on an investigation to determine the erect and inverted spin and recovery characteristics of a model of the North American FJ-4 airplane. The testing found that either a flat-type of steep-type spin may be obtained when the airplane is spinning erect. The optimum recovery technique from inverted spins was full rudder reversal with simultaneous movement of the ailerons to full with the stick maintained full forward.

Experimental Investigation of Extreme Internal Flow Turning at the Cowl Lip of an Axisymetric Inlet at a Mach Number of 2.95

Description: Memorandum presenting an experimental investigation of the pressure-recovery performance of a fixed-geometry, two-cone, two-drag inlet at Mach number 2.95. Low drag was achieved by use of an internally cylindrical cowl with rapid flow turning that was within 4 degrees of the wedge angle for shock detachment. Description: Memorandum presenting a linear theoretical analysis of the performance of three proportional navigation guidance systems installed in a given supersonic, variable-incidence, boost-glide, antiaircraft missile at Mach numbers of 2.7 and 1.3. An investigation of the effect of tip shape on the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of large-scale swept wings
