Quarterly Technical Progress Report - Investigation of Syngas Interaction in Alcohol Synthesis Catalysts

Description: This report presents the work done on " Investigation of Syngas Interaction in Alcohol Synthesis Catalysts" during the last quarter. The major activity during this period is on FTIR absorption studies of Co/Cr catalysts using CO as a probe molecule. Transition metals cobalt and copper play significant roles in the conversion of syngas (CO + H2 ) to liquid fuels. With a view to examine the nature of interaction between CO and metal, the FTIR spectra of CO adsorbed on Co-Cr2 O3 composites were in… more

Lithium-aluminum separations request

Description: A test irradiation of lithium was recently completed in one of the Hanford K Reactors. It is requested that these lithium-aluminum alloy targets be separated and analyzed for tritium content. This request is for the analysis to be performed on two groups or batches of samples. The first group would be 38 elements with a total gas content estimated to be approximately 97 liters. The second batch would consist of 76 elements with a total gas content estimated to be approximately 193 liters. This … more

Environmental implementation plan: Chapter 16, Environmental appraisal and surveillance program. Draft revision

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS) environmental-appraisal/surveillance program is designed to monitor environmental performance and to ensure that regulatory requirements are met. The appraisal/surveillance program is a two-tiered system which consists of external and internal appraisals and surveillances. External appraisals/surveillances are conducted by organizations not reporting to SRS management. The internal appraisals/surveillances are conducted by site organizations referred to as organiza… more

Interactions of proteins in aqueous ammonium-sulfate solutions:Mixtures of lysozyme and ovalbumin

Description: We present a three-dimensional, time-dependent simulation of a laboratory-scale rod-stabilized premixed turbulent V-flame. The simulations are performed using an adaptive time-dependent low Mach number model with detailed chemical kinetics and a mixture model for differential species diffusion. The algorithm is based on a second-order projection formulation and does not require an explicit sub grid model for turbulence or turbulence chemistry interaction. Adaptive mesh refinement is used to dyn… more

Corrosion of Stainless Steels by HNO3-HF-AL(NO3)3 Mixtures During Evaporation of Plutonium Product Streams

Description: Corrosion studies on various stainless steels were carried out using aluminum ion as a fluoride complexing agent to minimize corrosive attack on the evaporator. The rate of corrosion of stainless steels during the evaporation of HF-HNO3 mixture is quite high even in the presence of excess aluminum. With two moles of aluminum ion per mole of fluoride ion, the corrosion rate of stainless steel types 329 and 309-Cb was approximately 30 to 40 mils per year. Corrosion rates of other type of stainles… more

Discovering Chiral Higgsinos at the LHC

Description: The concept of chirality is extended to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and the {micro} term is forbidden by a gauged U(1){prime} symmetry. R-parity automatically emerges after symmetry breaking, suppressing proton decay and protecting the LSP. Exotics charged under the SM pose a challenge to traditional SU(5) unification, but unification is still implemented in deconstructed GUTs. Because of the multitude of additional states to the MSSM, the Z{prime} has a large width, and th… more

2006 Annual Report Summer Research Institute Interfacial and Condensed Phase Chemical Physics

Description: The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) hosted its third annual Summer Research Institute in Interfacial and Condensed Phase Chemical Physics from May through September 2006. During this period, twenty PNNL scientists hosted twenty-seven scientists from twenty-five different universities. Of the twenty-seven participants, one was a graduating senior; twenty-one were graduate students; one was a postdoctoral fellow; and four were university faculty members.

Wet processing of palladium for use in the tritium facility at Westinghouse, Savannah River, SC. Preparation of palladium using the Mound Muddy Water process

Description: Palladium used at Savannah River for tritium storage is currently obtained from a commercial source. In order to better understand the processes involved in preparing this material, Savannah River is supporting investigations into the chemical reactions used to synthesize this material and into the conditions necessary to produce palladium powder that meets their specifications. This better understanding may help to guarantee a continued reliable source for this material in the future. As part … more

Alternative methods to determine headwater benefits

Description: In 1992, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) began using a Flow Duration Analysis (FDA) methodology to assess headwater benefits in river basins where use of the Headwater Benefits Energy Gains (HWBEG) model may not result in significant improvements in modeling accuracy. The purpose of this study is to validate the accuracy and appropriateness of the FDA method for determining energy gains in less complex basins. This report presents the results of Oak Ridge National Laboratory`s (… more

Japan-U.S. Automotive Framework Talks

Description: The U.S.-Japan framework talks were initiated in July 1993. The automotive negotiations between Japan and the United States focused on sales of U.S. vehicles in Japan; sales of U.S.-made original equipment parts in Japan and to Japanese transplants in the United States; and deregulation of the market for replacement parts in Japan. An unresolved dispute over shock absorbers and other replacement parts resulted in the United States launching a formal investigation of Japanese market barriers to … more

Analysis report for 241-BY-104 Auger samples

Description: This report describes the analysis of the surface crust samples taken from single-shell tank (SST) BY-104, suspected of containing ferrocyanide wastes. This sampling and analysis will assist in ascertaining whether there is any hazard due to combustion (burning) or explosion of these solid wastes. These characteristics are important to future efforts to characterize the salt and sludge in this type of waste tank. This report will outline the methodology and detail the results of analyses perfor… more

Functions and requirements for K Basin SNF characterization shipping

Description: This document details the plan for the shipping of fuel samples from the K Basins to the 300 Area for characterization. The fuel characterization project will evaluate the Hanford defense production fuel (N-Reactor and Single Pass Reactor) to support interim storage, transportation and final disposition. A limited number of fuel samples will be transported to a laboratory for analysis. It is currently estimated that 20 shipments of fuel per year for approximately 3 years (could be as long as 5 … more

Stability of High-Level Waste Forms

Description: The objective of the proposed effort is to use a new approach to develop solution models of complex waste glass systems and spent fuel that are predictive with regard to composition, phase separation, and volatility. The effort will also yield thermodynamic values for waste components that are fundamentally required for corrosion models used to predict the leaching/corrosion behavior for waste glass and spent fuel material. This basic information and understanding of chemical behavior can subse… more

Projection of Plasma Across a Magnetic Field (Revised)

Description: Report discussing the trajectories of blobs of plasma as it travels across a magnetic field. Various observations are made about the blobs, such as the fact that they are diamagnetic, and that they can be either elastically scattered from each other or form a compound entity with a possible toroidal structure. "It is believed that these blobs are actually stable configurations of plasma and magnetic field, having both diamagnetic moment and spin."

Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, April-June 1961

Description: The Idaho Chemical Processing Plant did not operate on fuel recovery during this period, due to extensive renovation and modiflcation of facilities. Potasslum fluoride was found to be an undesirable additive to the barium precipitating agent used in formation of barium fluozirconate, because of precipitation and loss of uranium, although essentially complete precipitation of zirconium was achieved. Addition of hydrofluoric acid with barium precipitant, to achieve a fluoride/zirconium mole ratio… more
