Literature Survey on World Isotope and Radiation Technology : First Semi-Annual Report Covering the Period from June 15, 1961 to December 14, 1961

Description: The following report is the first semi-annual report of a literature survey designed to investigate the uses and technology of radioisotopes in the countries of the world from 1955 to the present. This survey includes two phases: 1) involves the direct comparison of radioisotopic work in all fields in various countries as demonstrated at international conferences. 2) involves a more detailed examination and evaluation of the individual fields of interest selected previously (Phase II is also ex… more

The Properties and Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Uranium Alloys

Description: From Abstract: "The heat treatment and mechanical properties of four zirconium alloys...were investigated. Tensile, hardness, Jominy end-quench, and metallographic data constitute the basis for much of the report. Other data reported include the results of high-temperature creep, tensile, hardness, cold rolling, thermal-cycling, and dynamic-modulus tests." A connection is made between the behavior of these four alloys and more alloys in the zirconium-uranium system.

Bibliography on High Pressure Systems and High Pressure-High Temperature Systems : Techniques, Apparatus and Experimental Data

Description: From preface: The following bibliography on high pressure-high temperature, and high pressure, is the result of an investigation into the equipment and experimental technique needed to increase the density of powdered compounds, especially those compounds which possess a high vapor pressure of hydrogen at moderate temperature and pressure.

Weighting Factors for Radically Flattened Piles

Description: The following report calculates pile reactivity changes that result from different pile loadings where it is desirable to have available values of (flux)2 d(volume) for various flat zone radii. This information was found for a cylindrical pile having circular flat zones and an effective radius of 598 cm., by integrating over a cross sectional volume of one cm. thickness.

The Crystal Structure of Bismuth Subchloride

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The stoichiometric formula of the lower chloride in the BiCl3-Bi system has been established as Bi12Cl14 (BiCl1.167) through a dingle crystal, X-ray determination of its structure. ... Previous studies of the Bi-Cl3-Bi system are re-examined in the light of the structural results."

Production of Pi-Mesons in Lead by High Energy Proton Bombardment

Description: Our knowledge of the properties of mesons and their interactions with nuclei has come from two sources. Studies of cosmic ray phenomena provided the earliest information. The discovery that mesons may be produced artificially by bombardment of nuclei with radiations from high energy accelerators has, on the other hand, made it feasible to undertake a wide variety of investigations under more controlled conditions than is possible in cosmic ray experiments. In such experiments mesons have bee… more

Impact Extrusion of Uranium

Description: Uranium has been successfully impact extruded into typical cylindrical shapes of conventional design. Extrusion was carried out in the "gamma" region by heating cast uranium slugs to a temperature of approximately 1050 degrees C. Protection against oxidation was afforded by surrounding the slugs during heating with an inert atmosphere of argon gas. Impact extruded shapes possessed physical properties which are better than the properties of as-cast metal. Also, extruded shapes show a uniform int… more

Diffusion of Krypton Through Uranium Carbide - Final Report

Description: This program was established to develop new information concerning the mechanism of diffusion of fission gases (krypton and xenon) through UO2 and UC. The work was to concentrated on measurements of diffusion rates in unirradiated materials in the temperature range of 1000°C to above 2000°C, these determinations being important to the projected use of refractory fuel materials in high-temperature, high-burnup reactors.

A Preliminary Study of the Economic Incentive of In-Pile Boiling as Applied to Dual Market Reactor Plants

Description: A study was performed to determine the economic incentives associated with in-pile boiling, with the explicit assumption that this method of operation was technically feasible. A non-boiling reactor plant was used as a comparison, and the net electric generation was held constant at 400 Mw. The economic effect of variations in specific power from 47 to 32 kw/ft., and steam qualities of 10 to 60% were studied. The results showed that, under the conditions used, the unit power cost during single … more

Plutonium Release Incident at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: A nonnuclear explosion involving an evaporator occurred in a shielded cell in the Radiochemical Processing Pilot plant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Plutonium released from the processing cell contaminated areas in the pilot plant building and nearby streets and building surfaces. The explosion is considered the result of rapid reaction of nitrated organic compounds formed by the inadvertent nitration of about 14 liters of a proprietary decontaminating reagent.

Delay Time Prior to Dumping the HRT

Description: Some refined calculations have been made, relative to a proposed delay prior to a dump, to determine the expected D2 concentration in the vent stream from the pressurizer gas bleeds during a dump of the Homogeneous Reactor Test (HRT). These calculations indicate that for vent valves have a Cv of 0.07 (venting time from 2000 psia to D2O saturation pressure of approximately 12 minutes), a delay period is not required since the D2 concentration is well below lower explosive limit. For vent valves … more
