Technical Department report on production test No. 313-78-M: Study for evaluation of slug dimensions

Description: The present system of classifying slugs intended for canning provides for individual measurement of dimensions on first-run MZ material, but not for their individual weighing. While the total and average weights of this type of material are determined on batches of twenty, this operation is for purposes of accounting only, and no concern is normally attached to the functional aspects of varying weights. It is thought desirable to obtain information relative to this problem. Collection of such i… more

100 Areas technical activities report - physics, September 1946

Description: The Pine unit was down four times during the month. These were all regularly scheduled shutdowns. Times down vary from 16.9 hours to 19.2 hours. A total of 33.4 tons of metal was discharged. The galvano-meter chamber in experimental hole {open_quotes}A{close_quotes} was replaced. One Special Request was discharged and three tubes have been loaded with Special Request samples. A new bismuth column has been established. Some difficulty has been experienced with high temperatures of both tube exit… more

Half-Life of Polonium

Description: Abstract: "The half-life of polonium has been measured by a calorimetric method using samples several thousand times larger than have been previously available. The value is found to be 138.3 +/- 0.1% days."

The Detection of Uranium by X-ray Spectrometry

Description: Abstract: "The possibility of detecting small quantities of uranium with an X-ray spectrometer was investigated. An X-ray spectrograph was modified by substituting a geiger counter for the photographic film. Both primary and secondary methods of excitation were studied. Radiation background of high intensity and variability limits the sensitivity of the present apparatus to 1%. Suggestions are made for increasing the sensitivity of the method."

Spectrophotometric Evidence for the Existence of UCl₅ as the Double Compound UCl₆ and UCl₄

Description: Abstract: "Spectrophotometric evidence for the existence of UCl₅ as a double compound UCl₆ and UCl₄ has been obtained by studying the absorption spectra of these chlorides in CCl₄ and SOCl2 solutions in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum."

High-altitude flight cooling investigation of a radial air-cooled engine

Description: "An investigation of the cooling of an 18-cylinder, twin-row, radial, air-cooled engine in a high-performance pursuit airplane has been conducted for variable engine and flight conditions at altitudes ranging from 5000 to 35,000 feet in order to provide a basis for predicting high-altitude cooling performance from sea-level or low altitude experimental results. The engine cooling data obtained were analyzed by the usual NACA cooling-correlation method wherein cylinder-head and cylinder-barrel t… more

Analytical investigation of the use of regeneration in compressor-turbine-propeller systems

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of the present paper is to show in more detail the possibilities end the limitations of the use of regeneration as a means of effecting greater fuel economy and of reducing the net weight of the power plant and fuel of compressor-turbine-propeller aircraft engines."

Evaluation of Gust and Draft Velocities from Flights of P-61c Airplanes within Thunderstorms August 7, 1946 to August 13, 1946 at Orlando, Florida

Description: This report presents the results obtained from gust and draft velocity measurements within thunderstorms for the period August 7, 1946 to August, 13, 1946 at Orlando Florida. In several of the surveys, indications of ambient air temperature were obtained from photo-observer records. These data are summarized in the report.

Investigation of Three Design Modifications of the NACA Injection Impeller in an R-3350 Engine

Description: An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of three design modifications of the original NACA injection impeller on the performance of an R-3350 engine. Different methods of injecting the fuel into the impeller air stream were studied and evaluated from the individual cylinder fuel-air ratios and the resulting cylinder temperatures. Each impeller was tested for a range of engine powers normally used in flight operation. The relatively simple design of the original injection impelle… more

Altitude cooling investigation of the R-2800-21 engine in the P-47g airplane 3: individual-cylinder temperature reduction by means of intake-pipe throttle and by coolant injection

Description: "Flight tests were conducted on a R-2800-21 engine in the P-47G airplane to determine the effect on the wall temperatures of cylinder 10 of throttling the charge in the intake pipe and of injecting a water-ethanol coolant into the intake pipe. Cylinder 10 was chosen for this investigation because it runs abnormally hot (head temperatures of the order of 45 F higher than those of the next hottest cylinder) at the medium and high-power conditions. Tests with interchanged cylinders showed that the… more

Altitude cooling investigation of the R-2800-21 engine in the P-47G airplane 2: investigation of the engine & airplane variables affecting the cylinder temperature distribution

Description: "The data obtained from cooling tests of an R-2800-21 engine installed in a P-47G airplane were studied to determine which engine and airplane operation variables were mainly responsible for the extremely uneven temperature distribution among the 18 engine cylinders obtained at the medium and high engine-power conditions. The tests consisted of flights at altitudes from 5000 to 35,000 feet for the normal range of engine and airplane operation. The results of the study showed that a flow conditi… more
