Additional facilities to handle PUREX tank farm vapor wastes. Project CG-719

Description: The liquid high-level radioactive wastes from the separations plant are stored in large underground tanks where radioactive decay of the fission products in storage gives off heat. In the case of the 241-A underground storage tank farm, for Purex wastes, advantage is taken of this heat to self-concentrate the wastes. The present practice is to permit boiling and concentration in the storage tanks. The vapors given off from the boiling wastes are collected in a vapor header and passed through a … more

Aqueous Corrosion of Uranium Fuel-Element Cores Containing 0 to 20 w/o Zirconium

Description: Abstract: A description is given of the design and operation of a windowed autoclave system employed in the study of corrosion by pressurized hot water. The device has been used to obtain time-lapse motion pictures of the swelling and rupture of deliberately defected zirconium-clad uranium specimens. A Coaxial Static-Electromagnetic Velocity Spectrometer for HighEnergy Particles

Description: An apparatus is described in which crossed E and H fields will be used to separate high-energy charged particles of different masses. It is shown that use of coaxial geometry is expected to effect satisfactory separation within a considerably shorter system than would be possible in a parallel-plate system with a comparable separation criterion, A summary is given of the operational characteristics of a spectrometer now under construction.

Effect of Pressure Differentials on Deflection of the Outer Fuel Plates of Brazed APPR Fuel Elements

Description: One of the considerations in designing a flat plate fuel element is the resistance of the fuel plates, especially the outer plates in the fuel plate array, to deflection and permanent deformation as a result of pressure differentials. An investigation was recently initiated wit the objective of obtaining preliminary information on the APPR-type fuel element to determine the effect of pressure differentials on the outer plates in the fuel assembly. The APPR-1 fuel element consists of 18 flat com… more

Electromagnetic Research Division Quarterly Progress Report, Part I for Period Ending June 30, 1952

Description: From abstract: "On the 86-inch cyclotron a 41-kw beam has been calorimetered at a net ion loading efficiency of 40%; the average proton current was 1.85 ma at 22.5 Mev. Practical specific yields have been determined for (p,2n) reactions on zinc and bismuth. The investigation of products of proton-induced fission of uranium has been continued and new techniques are being used in measuring angular distribution of reaction products. Identification of Foreign Objects Damaging Compressor Blades in Turbojet Engines

Description: "Damage to the compressor blades of turbojet engines due to ingestion of foreign objects is a growing problem, the solution of which has been made more difficult by the large percentage of damaging materials that have remained unknown. A rapid emission spectroscopic method was devised to identify the chemical composition of these foreign objects. Results on laboratory-prepared specimens and blades from damaged engines show that the method can be utilized to determine the nature of the ingested … more

Investigation of boundary-layer transition on flat-faced bodies of revolution at high supersonic speeds

Description: An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the boundary-layer transition characteristics of bodies of revolution with flat and nearly flat faces. Shadowgraphs indicated that the boundary layer remained laminar on the front faces and was turbulent only on the sides. The tests also yielded information on the total drag coefficients and static longitudinal stability of the models.

Metallographic Examination of ORNL #1, SHE #2

Description: Small Heat Exchanger ORNL #1, type SHE #2, was removed form test stand B after 2071 hours of operation. Thirty-five samples were removed form the entire heat exchanger. The corrosion found on the outside of the tubes exposed to the fluoride mixture ranged to a maximum depth of .004 inches; however, the frequency of occurrence along the tube wall was heavier at the NaK outlet header, which was the hottest area in the heat exchanger. The depth of attack observed on the fluoride side of this heat … more

Recent Data on Tire Friction During Landing

Description: "An investigation was made at the Langley landing-loads track to obtain data on the coefficient of friction during wheel spin-up. A landing gear was tested at horizontal velocities ranging from 0 to 180 feet per second together with vertical velocities of 7.0 and 9.3 feet per second. The results indicate the effect of forward speed and tire inflation pressure on the coefficient of friction" (p. 1).
