Biological Effects of Blast. Technical Progress Report

Description: The current state of knowledge relevant to biological blast effects was summarized in a selective manner. Initially, five problems of concern to those who would relate the environmental variations produced by nuclear weapons with biological response and hazard assessment were pointed out. Primary, secondary, tertiary, and miscellaneous blast effects were defined and selected interspecies experimental data of a physical and pathophysiological nature useful in estimating human response were prese… more

Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. Lithium formed zeta alumina, LiAl/sub 5/O/sub 8/. Ph… more

SNAP-8, the First Electric Propulsion Power System

Description: The SNAP-8 Electrical Generating System is a nuclearturbo-electric space power plant -which is ideally suited for utilization with electric propulsion. Several applications, the program objectives, the over-all system, and the design of the major components are described. The program status is delineated and future plans leading to an early flight test and equipment endurance demonstration are defined. (auth)

A Mechanism Explaining the Instability of EBR-I, Mark III

Description: Presented at the International Atomic Energy Agencysponsored Seminar on the Physics of Fast and Intermediate Reactors. Vienna, August 3-11, 196l. A feedback model, was developed to account for resonant instabilities in the Mark II core. In this model, the prompt positive power coefficient effect is ascribed to fuel rod bowing and the delayed negative power coefficient effect to thermally lnduced motions in the lower shield plate. Since this model is supported by observations, it is concluded th… more

SPALLATION-FISSION COMPETITION IN ASTATINE COMPOUND NUCLEI FORMEDBY HEAVY-ION BOMBARDMENT

Description: Cross sections for neutron-evaporation reactions from compound nuclei produced by bombardment of gold with carbon ions and of platinum with nitrogen ions have been determined. The magnitudes of the cross sections are considerably lower than would be predicted on the assumption that neutron emission is the only important mode of decay of the intermediate nuclei. This observation is explained on the basis of fission competition with neutron emission. To a much lesser extent, charged-particle evap… more

BIO-ORGANIC CHEMISTRY QUARTERLY REPORT DEC. 1960 THROUGH FEB.1961

Description: The current interest in the subject of fiber optics has brought about, among its many achievements, the development of a new technique for measuring refractive index. An instrument designed as a light-pipe refractometer or rod photorefractometer has been described by Kapany and Pike. these authors have presented both a theoretical study of the phenomenon and experimental results arising from a prototype apparatus. The range of applicability of such a device is limited, however, by the availabil… more

QUANTUM CONVERSION IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Description: A new suggestion is made based on model work associated with similar measurements on the biological material itself. The primary quantum conversion act is an ionization occurring in a charge transfer complex. This is what it amounts to in chemical terms. But this process cannot occur in isolated charge transfer molecules in solution because the products cannot escape from each other. The primary quantum conversion as it occurs in modern photosynthesis can only take place in a laminated structur… more

Response of dual-purpose reinforced-concrete mass shelter. Project 30. 2 of Operation Plumbbob

Description: A reinforced-concrete dual-purpose underground parking garage and personnel shelter designed for a long-duration incident pressure of 40 psi was tested. The shelter was exposed to shot Priscilla, an approx. 37-kt 700-ft balloon burst (June 24, 1957), at a ground range of 1600 ft (predicted 35-psi peak incident-pressure level). The recorded peak incident pressure at the shelter was approximately 39 psi. Postshot soil borings were made to obtain undisturbed samples for determining soil characteri… more
