Hydrogen Flammability Data and Application to PWR Loss-of-coolant Accident

Description: Supplemental to WAPD-SC-54l. A summary is presented of generalized data on the flammability of hydrogen in steam-air mixtures. The flammability data are applied to a postulated Pressurized Water Reactor loss-of-coolant accident and to estimates of the potential pressure effects on the PWR plant container. (C.H.)

CORROSION OF AN ALUMINUM-NICKEL ALLOY IN A REACTOR TEST LOOP

Description: The results of the corrosion study are illustrated in a plot of the weight loss of the aluminum--nickel samples with respect to the time at test temperatures of 470 to 485 deg F. The corrosion rate determined by this test indicates that the weight loss per unit time is the same for both the in-pile irradiated specimens and the out-of-pile control specimens which did not have any neutron exposure, except that the out-of-pile specimens had a higher initial rate of corrosion which elevated the cur… more

Thermomagnetic and Galvanomagnetic Effects

Description: A review is given of the various transverse thermomagnetic and galvanomagnetic effects. The coefficicnts and relations between coefficients are listed for both metals and semiconductors. A quantitative annlysis is given of the error in Hall effcct measurements owing to non-isothermal conditions. (auth)

Design of MTR Fuel-Element-Source Shipping Cask for Railway Mobile Irradiation Facility. Progress Report

Description: The gamma -radiation field from a battery of 10 MTR spent fuel elements was calculated and a special shipping cask designed to contain the 10 elements. An internal watercooled tank in the cask holds the 10 elements in the vertical position. Two external air-cooled, finned-tube heat exchangers control the water temperature. The sides of the cask open to convert the cask to a radiation source without changing the position of the elements. A unique feature of the design is a device for closing the… more

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR HANDLING PLUTONIUM, URANIUM, THORIUM, THE ALKALI METALS, ZIRCONIUM, TITANIUM, MAGNESIUM, AND CALCIUM

Description: BS>This report compiles from various sources safety considerations for work with the special metals plutonium, uranium, thorium, the alkali group, magnesium, titanium, calcium, and zirconium. General criteria to be observed in handling all of these metals and their alloys are listed, as well as characteristics of individual metals with regard to health hazards, pyrophoricity, explosiveness, and other chemical reactions, in both handling and storage. Isothermal Annealing Below 60 K of Deuteron Irradiated Noble Metals. Technical Report No. 11

Description: are as follows: The annealing spectrum in very pure noble metals is simple. In the 15 deg K to 80 deg K range it consists of a number of small peaks followed by a large peak. These peaks in the activation energy spectrum are reasonably produced per primary and that the separation distances of these defects are of the order of two to ten or twenty lattice parameters then it is not too surprising to find some spread in the activation energies, especially since the spread is only of order 0.01 ev.… more

Expansion of Copper Upon Low Temperature Deuteron Irradiation. Technical Report No. 12

Description: Average value of the specific change in length per deuteron per cm/sup 2/ for 8.5-Mev deuterons is 3.8 x l0/sup 21/. This expansion was observed to be a linear function of iniegrated flux. Using a value of l.5 v/sub a/, where v/sub a/ is the atomic volume, for the volume increase due to a Frenkel pair in copper, the calculated concentration of defects is 1/6 that predicted by the simple theory of Seitz and Koehler, nnd DELTA a/ DELTA a/sub max/ equals DL/L to ll% during irradiation on the assum… more

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF SLIGHTLY ENRICHED URANIUM, WATER MODERATED LATTICES. PART I. 0.600-IN.-DIAMETER RODS

Description: Studies on 15 uranium-water lattices of 0.600-in.diameter uranium rods are presented. Three fuel enrichments were used; these had nominal U/sup 235/ contents of for the fuel is given. Five ratios of water-to-uranium volunmes were studied with each fuel enrichment. The pertinent geometrical data on these lattices are given. (W.L.H.)

Irradiation of Uranium-Fissium Alloys and Related Compositions. Work Performed: 1956

Description: Irradiation results in the range near 1/2% burnup and 500 to 600 deg C are presented for U-fissium amd U-Mo alloys. Under these conditions both classes of alloys show quite low growth coefficients and volume increases, with a few exceptions. Water queaching either alloy from 850 deg C is shown to be unsatisfactory. The effect of an axial hole for relief of fission gases appears to be inconclusive. Surface condition of irradiated U-base alloys appears to be not quite as good as that for U-20 wt.… more

Semiannual Report to the Atomic Energy Commission. Studies on Erythropoiesis

Description: Progress is reported in studies directed toward an understanding of the mechanism of control of red blood cell formation. A relatively rapid and sensitive method of assay for erythropoietin was developed, using the rate of incorporation of iron-59 into the red cells of normal, hypophysectomized, or starved rats as a measure of the rate of erythropoiesis. Factors that control erythropoiesis through control of production of erythropoietin were studied. The effect of erythropoietin in initiating m… more

Tertiary Effects of Blast--Displacement. Preliminary Report

Description: Measurements were made of the velocity and distance of translation of anthropomorphic dummies and equivalent spheres caused by blast winds. The primary technique for recording the movement of these ohjects was phototriangulation. The secondary technique (applicable to certain of the equivalent spheres) was to have the spheres impelled into missile traps. The resultant penetration provides a means for determining the velocity at the time of impact. Analysis of the results from both the primary a… more
