Adsorption of Krypton and Xenon by Various Materials

Description: The adsorptive capacities of various inorganic adsorbents and activated charcoals for krypton and xenon were determined. Columbia-G activated charcoal had the highest capacity for both krypton and xenon at pressures from 0.01 to 125 mm Hg and temperaturens from 2 to 85 deg C. If a value of 1 is assigned to the capacity of this charcoal at 28 deg C for krypton, other charcoals range from 0.63 to 0.84, molecular sieves (except 4A) from 0.11 to 0.20, and some silica genls from 0.05 to 0.07. Air blast studies with animals. Part II.

Description: Goats under Nembutal and mice were exposed in a shock tube modified to give longer-duration overpressures and equipped with ports for photography. Except for ear damage, displacement still seemed to be the major cause of injury in goats in the 4-foot section of the tube. However, it was found that mice were killed, apparently by pure blast, in a particular position in a particular type of side chamber attached to the higher-pressure, smaller-diameter, section of the tube. The relation between m… more

AIRCRAFT NUCLEAR PROPULSION DEPARTMENT NUCLEAR SAFETY GUIDE

Description: The limitations and operating techniques which were in effect at ANPD for the prevention of criticality accidents are summarized. The standards followed by the atomic industry were followed; however, the safe mass of U/sup 235/ moderated with beryllium oxide and hydrogeneous materials was based upon criticality experiments conducted at ANPD. Although the guide was primarily for the use of the ANPD nuclear safety control organization, it may also be of assistance to designers and operating manag… more

Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

An Analogue Solution of a Reactor Perturbation Initiated by a Metallurgical Phase Transformation of the Fuel

Description: The analysis of a reactor model that is thermally nonlinear is presented. The significant sources of feadback in the closed-loop model ane dilatational changes of the fuel due to axial expansion caused by temperature and metallurgical phase changes. Ths dynamics of this phenomenon has been represented on the Pace electronic analog com puter. The model was subjected to unusually large inputs of sinusoidal power and did not show any drastic tendencies toward being unstable. (auth)

An Analysis of Specific Heat Data for Water and Water Vapor in the Critical Region. Technical Report No. 8

Description: A comprehensive review of the available data for the specific heat at constant pressure of water and water vapor is given for pressures from 14.22 to 4300 psia and temperatures from 680 to 800 deg F. ln addition a description is given of the various experimental techniques employed by different investigators to carry out measurements of this property. Deviations of up to 20% are shown to be in existence between the measured values of specific heat of different investigators. The estimated appar… more

An Analysis of the Disturbance of a Uranium Oxide Capsule Surface Temperature Distribution Resulting From a Thermocouple Attached to the Inside Surface

Description: A study was initiated to determine the precision with which surface temperature measurements could be made in irradiation capsules containing ceramic fuel. A thermocouple was considered to be positioned in a longitudinal groove prepared in the uranium oxide and metallurgically bonded to the inside surface of the stainless steel clad. A fuel capsule having a 3/4 inch outside diameter, designed as a segment of the EGCR fuel element, and operating with a heat generation rating of 27,500 Btu/hr/lin… more

Analytical Method for Inline Plutonium Analyses

Description: Laboratory studies demonstrated the feasibility of a colorimetric method for the in-line analysis of plutonium(III) and plutonium(IV) in the Purex process. Negligible interference was caused by normal variations in the concentration of nitric acid, nitrous acid, or ferric sulfate. (auth)

Anion Exchange in a Large-Scale Agitated Bed

Description: An agitated ion exchange column was adapted for use in a large radiochemical separations plant. Tests with nonradioactive solutions showed that ion exchange resin could be charged to and discharged from the column through typical plant piping and without the use of mechanical valves. With the agitator turning, the bed passed solutions containing 400 ppm of finely divided silica whereas a fixed bed became plugged. The pressure drop through the column and the absorption characteristics of an anio… more

The Argonne 60-IN. Scattering Chamber

Description: The 60-in. scattering chamber used with the external beam of the Argonne 60-in. cyclotron is described. The scattering chamber permits operation over an angular range from 4 deg to 176 deg with an accuracy of plus or minus 3 min. of arc. The geometrical factors involved in the measurement of cross sections are known to plus or minus 0.1% or better. The angular positions of the detectors, the target changer, and an absorber foil system in front of the detection units are operated by remote contr… more

BEVATRON OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT. XXVIII. Period Covered November 1960-January 1961

Description: The Bevatron operated an average of 80% of the scheduled operating time with the exception of one 5-day shutdown period for emergency maintenance of the motor generator sets. The machine was shut off l9% of the scheduled operating time because of component failure and 1% at the request of the user. During and following the Christmas shutdown period an ultrasonic inspection was made of the flywheel keyway on each of the motor generator sets. No faults were apparent. Charpy samples were taken fro… more

BIO-ORGANIC CHEMISTRY QUARTERLY REPORT DEC. 1960 THROUGH FEB.1961

Description: The current interest in the subject of fiber optics has brought about, among its many achievements, the development of a new technique for measuring refractive index. An instrument designed as a light-pipe refractometer or rod photorefractometer has been described by Kapany and Pike. these authors have presented both a theoretical study of the phenomenon and experimental results arising from a prototype apparatus. The range of applicability of such a device is limited, however, by the availabil… more
