Report of trip to YTS - C91 test projectile

Description: As a part of the RAIL feasibility study, Operation Dorothe (March 1961) was conducted to determine if a liquid explosive could survive the acceleration of launch from a 155 mm howitzer. This operation was successful, although some structural difficulty was experienced with the test round (C-90). Upon completion of that exercise, it was decided to design a test round that could be used with the more viscous slurry-type explosives, and to fire several of these new rounds with inert filler prior t… more

Efficiency Studies with Gamma Ray Portion of Specialized Reactor-Shield Monte Carlo Program 18-0

Description: Application studies were made with Specialized Reactor-Shield Monte Carlo Program 18-0 to determine the efficiency and feasibility of calculating energy deposition due to primary core gamma rays throughout the XNJ140E-1 reactor-shield assembly. Monte Carlo results are presented in tabular form for all geometrical regions used to describe the shield. Described here is a means of obtaining adequate and valid heating rates in about 47 hours on the IBM-704 digital computer. Comparison of Monte Carl… more

Radiation Safety and Control Training Manual

Description: Introduction: The Laboratory follows the recommendations of the National Committee on Radiation Protection concerning permissible exposure limits for those working with radiation. A system of controls and regulations has been established which should ensure that no person at the Laboratory will receive more than the permissible exposure. This manual is intended to provide the minimum background necessary for intelligent cooperation with the regulations.

COSTS OF NUCLEAR POWER

Description: The discussion on the costs of nuclear power from stationary plants, designed primarily for the generation of electricity. deals with those plants in operation, being built, or being designed for construction at an early date. An attempt is made to consider the power costs on the basis of consistent definitions and assumptions for the various nuclear plants and for comparable fossil-fuel plants. Information on several new power reactor projects is included. (auth)

The Nuclear Design of the Yankee Core

Description: The nuclear characteristics of the initial core loading for the Yankee Atomic Electric Company power plant are described. These characteristics include core reactivity, control rod and boron worths, and reactivity coefficients. In addition to operating characteristics, parameters for the cold and hot zero power cores are obtained for comparison with startup experiment data. Calculations to determine these characteristics are based on mechanical design specifications. (auth)

Heat Transfer to a Mist Flow. Technical Report No. 5

Description: An experimental and analytical study was made of the heat-transfer characteristics of a mist flow of steam and water droplets flowing vertically upward in a round tube. A simplified analytical model, based on momentum, mass, and energy considerations, was developed which shows qualitatively that severe temperature fluctuations are characteristic of such flows under constant-wall heat-flux conditions. The experimental data showed that the analytical model gave a fairly accurate qualitative descr… more
