Bibliography of Temperature Measurement: January 1953 to June 1960

Description: Report presenting more than 500 references to the field of temperature measurement. These references were collected from two general sources: Scientific and technical literature and government reports. The period covered is from 1953 to June 1960, with some from earlier dates. References are divided into a number of categories based on the type of instrument used. Some references to calibration of instruments and to scientific theories upon which temperature measurement is based are also presen… more

Deposition Of Thermal Energy By Nuclear Explosives

Description: A fraction of the energy released by the underground detonation of nuclear explosives is locally deposited as residual thermal energy. An accurate prediction of this usable fraction of the energy released is necessary to evaluate the feasibility of several of the proposed projects in the Plowshare Program. This paper will present a summary of the available data on residual thermal energy from nuclear detonations in three different geological media: tuff, halite, and granodiorite.

Exponential Signal Rate-Of-Rise Measurement Instrument

Description: The increasing exponential function e-at [a > 0] characterizes such natural events as gas discharges, neutron multiplication, and the transistor avalanche phenomenon. This report describes an instrument for measuring the rate of rise, a, of an increasing electrical exponential signal.

Improved Zirconium Alloys Quarterly Report: January - March 1962

Description: The following report is one of a series of quarterly reports following the progress and development of improved zirconium alloys for service in superheated water and steam. This report covers the period between January 1 to March 31, 1962 and was conducted by the United States and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM). The major effort in this period has been devoted to ascertaining and evaluating corrosion behavior of 75 ternary compositions.

A Plasma Cyclotron

Description: In a previous report the adaptation of Stix's ion-cyclotron-wave-heating scheme to the mirror geometry was suggested. An experiment along these lines has been conducted for the past year by E. Chambers, using a tubular P.I.G discharge to provide the basic plasma. The Chambers experiment has been eminently successful in demonstrating the transfer of rf power along the P.I.G. (as along a co-axial conductor), and the resultant acceleration of ions. The power transfer is evident from the predominan… more

Process optimization 709 program

Description: In the past two years a number of process optimization studies have been made with the aid of IBM machine programs. These programs have been designed to calculate optimum power levels and optimum goal exposures so that better insight could be gained for use in resolving plant operating plans. We feel that this approach has been highly successful. In January of 1960, a new program was written for the IBM 709 to incorporate the desirable features of the previous programs and to provide additional… more

Production Test IP-502-I calibration of gas monitoring instrumentation to measure the amount of oxygen in a reactor

Description: This production test is designed to test the feasibility of controlling the amount of air entering a reactor, hence, the burnout of the graphite by monitoring the gas activity. Gas activity comes from the induced activity on argon, which is one of the constituents of air. This production test is basically a test to calibrate the gas activity instruments as a function of various amounts of argon in the reactors gas system. The first two parts of the test are calibration points with different amo… more

Report on 8-inch isostatic press explosion at Site 300

Description: On 3 March 1960 at 11:30 a.m. a detonation occurred in the 8-inch isostatic press. The press and building were completely destroyed. Operating personnel were protected and no injuries resulted. Adjacent facilities were not affected. The press was housed in a temporary facility located in the southwest portion of Section 26, Site 300. The facility was situated approximately 1000 feet west of the main site road, and 1400 feet north of the county road. The press building was of frangible wood cons… more

Supplementary report of preliminary testing production test IP-234-AE: Supplement 2, Project CG-775, prototype testing of the 190-K process pumping units

Description: It was necessary to provide a basis for the design of modifications to the 190-K pumping units to achieve increased process water flow rates. The prototype pumping unit was inspected for cavitation damage after 3 months operation. The low lift pump impeller showed no cavitation damage, while the high lift pump impeller showed excessive damage. The lower max flow capacity and slightly increased power requirements of the third prototype impeller should not preclude its use if its cavitation perfo… more
