Development of High-Temperature Strain Gages

Description: From Introduction: "An improved high-temperature gage was needed, and in an attempt to fill this need an investigation was initiated in February 1954 in the Enameled Metals Laboratory at the National Bureau of Standards. The present Monograph constitutes a final summary on this program."

Preliminary Design of a Basic Radiation Effects Reactor (BRER)

Description: From Introduction: "Information has been accumulated about the property changes produced, but there are essentially no reliable quantitative data correlating property changes with the magnitude and energy distribution of the neutron fluxes responsible for the changes. The design of the Basic Radiation Effects Reactor (BRER) presented herein stems from the two main requirements: 1. a fairly high-level, high-energy neutron flux with minimal thermal neutron and gamma-ray background is desired; 2. … more

A Report on Some Attempts to Cast Centrifugally Fuel Elements of Small Diameter

Description: Report issued by the Argonne national Laboratory discussing centrifugal casting of thin uranium plates. The applicability of the centrifugal casting technique to the production of multiple castings of fuel pins of small diameter and of thin fuel plates was investigated. This report includes tables, illustrations, and photographs.

The Cold Pressing of Sinterable UO₂

Description: The intent of this work was to explore more fully the pressing of sinterable UO2 powders into cylindrical compacts in the hope that a more precise prediction of green density in terms of powder properties, pressure, and geometry could be evolved.

PERIODIC WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM MATERIAL BALANCE TEST. CORE I, SEED 2. Section 2. Test Results T-641317

Description: ABS>A test was made on the Radioactive Waste Disposal (RWD) system to determine the acceptability of procedures used in containing, processing, and disposing the wastes received from the plant during a steady-state operation. The RWD system was found to be adequate and to have 60,000 gallons available at all times in the Surge and Decay tanks for safety injection. (D.L.C.)

DAMAGE TO CONVENTIONAL AND SPECIAL TYPES OF RESIDENCES EXPOSED TO NUCLEAR EFFECTS

Description: Ten residential structures of wood, brick, lightweight reinforced concrete block, and lightweight precast concrete slabs were exposed in pairs to the effects of a nuclear device of approximately 30 kt yield, detonated atop a 500-ft tower. The houses represented various structural types, and two houses of each type were tested. One house was located at an anticipated overpressure at which collapse or major damage might be expected and the other was located at an anticipated overpressure at which… more

THE DYNAMIC PINCH AS A HIGH-INTENSITY LIGHT SOURCE FOR OPTICAL MASER PUMPING

Description: >The optical radiation that occurs in a dynamic plasma pinch experiment depends in part on the amount and type of impurity atoms present in the system. By proper choice of these impurities, it should be possible to tailor the optical radiation from the pinch in intensity, spectrum, and duration such that the kinetic energy of motion (1OO to 1OOO joules) appears as radiation enengy in less than 10/sup -6/ sec. This should provide a good method of optical pumping for pulse optical maser operation… more

OPERATIONAL INVESTIGATION OF NUCLEAR INSTRUMENTATION. CORE I, SEED 2. Test Results (T-643725). Section 2

Description: The test data indicate that the response of the Intermediate-Range log- level-current instrumentation was linear between 5 x 10/sup -//sup 1//sup 1/ to 5 x 10/sup -//sup 7/ amperes for start-up rates of 0.2 to 1.0 decsdes per minute based on the as sumption that the reactor trsnsient behavior can be predicted by the reactor kinetic equation. A comparison of the intermediate range start-up rate readings with the start-up rates determined from the slope of the intermediate-range log-level current… more
