STABILITY OF UO$sub 2$-NaK SLURRIES. Final Report

Description: The UOsub 2/-NaK system was studied with special reference to the wetting of UO/dub 2/ by NaK and the effect of temperature on the viscosity of the UO/dub 2/-NaK slurry. It was found that UO/sub 2/ powder of approximately 1 micron average particle diameter was wetted by NaK at approximately 400 un. Concent 85% C. No evidence of dewetting or flocculation was noted at temperatures up to 600 un. Concent 85% C, although it was not proved conclusively flocculation does not occur at the higher temper… more

IPD predicted vs CPD measurement differences twelve two-ton test batches

Description: This report summarizes the IPD predicted vs. CPD measured values from twelve two-ton test batches. Two sets of comparisons are provided: CPD measured vs. IPD predicated based on techniques used since January 1, 1960 and CPD measured vs. IPD predicted based on techniques used prior to January 1, 1960.

Instrumentation studies, Status report

Description: Two computer codes (1- and 6-node models) were used in the calculations. For the 1-node model, standard reactor kinetics, heat transfer, and instrument delay equations were programmed for analog and digital computers; effects of full-pile reactivity insertions were calculated. The 6-node model contains the time-dependent diffusion equations and heat transfer and instrument delay equations; it was programmed for the analog computer only, and was used to calculate effects of local reactivity inser… more

Evaluation of the techniques for end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors

Description: Two techniques for the end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors are presented. One technique consists of two alternative methods for the destruction of the reactor core. This technique (and others) have been investigated during the past year. A second technique, uses a naturally occurring phenomena, which works on the principle of a low neutron absorbing nuclide decaying to a high neutron absorbing daughter (poison). The present design criteria for the latter technique is that only a smal… more

Interim report experience with PT IP-467-C reducing minimum downtime

Description: The length of the minimum outage, or period of time during which a reactor must remain subcritical following a shutdown from equilibriu, is a direct function of the available excess reactivity. In reactors with unlimited safety system capacities, it is quite feasible to ``build in`` sufficient excess to allow complete override of the shutdown xenon transient, and thus, in effect, reduce the ``minimum downtime`` to zero. Present Hanford production reactors do not possess this unlimited capacity,… more

Pilot Plant Denitration of Purex Waste With Sugar

Description: Batch denitration of synthetic Purex waste was investigated in 12 batch runs in the pilot plant denitration unit. Sugar was continuously added to 25 liters of hot waste. After sugar addition was complete, the hot solution was digested for several hours. The reaction proceeded smoothly and was easily controlled. About 19 to 22 moles of nitric acid were destroyed per mole of sugar with a reaction pot temperature of 100 deg C and a digestion period of 12 hours. About 17 moles of nitric acid were d… more

Classification - guidance for specialty irradiations

Description: The purpose of this memorandum is to describe the concepts for accomplishing localized tailoring of thermal neutron flux. The application of fuel displacement and enrichment techniques in lattice cells surrounding a test facility may accelerate sample irradiation rates by an order of magnitude or more above those in the normal reactor environment. Thus, test irradiation conditions may be established by such flux tailoring techniques which are not indicative of the specific flux and power condit… more
