A Solution of the Distributional Error Problem in Cytophotometry

Description: Use of that portion of the characteristic curve of photographic film in which transmission is linear with log exposure eliminates the distributional error and thus makes possible the assessment of total mass of an inhomogeneously distributed cell consistent without scanning or measuring the cell's projected area. Measurement consists of obtaining the difference in output of a photocell receiving the total light transmitted by a photomicrograph of the cell, and a photomicrograph of the microscop… more

Symbols for Instrument Flowsheets and Drawings : a Recommended System for Application to ORNL Instrument Work

Description: This report supersedes ORNL CF-57-2-1, which was an extension and revision of ORNL CF-54-6-72. Details concerning a recommended system of flow-plan symbols and drawing are given. The system is designed to identify the function of all major instrument components and to show schematically the operation of the instrument relative to the particular process. The system is used for identification and designation. The system is a modification of the Instrument Society of American Recommended Practice … more

Spinning of Columbium & Columbium 1%- Zirconium Tubing

Description: The following objectives were planned for this project. (1) Development of spinning data necessary for spinning Columbium and Columbium-1% Zirconium tubing from ingot, forged or welded tube blanks. (2) Determine mechanical & metallurgical properties of spun Columbium and Columbium-1% Zirconium tubing. (3) Determine dimensional and tolerance limits possible to attain on spun Columbium and Columbium-1% Zirconium tubing based on our present equipment, tooling limitations, and the spinning tests p… more

Lens Opacification in Mice Exposed to Monoenergetic Fast Neutrons

Description: Early effects obtained with monoenergetic fast neutrons in mice have been described elsewhere. Emphasis in this report will be placed on the late effects of lens opacification (cataractogenesis), particularly during the period soon after irradiation with low or fractionated doses of neutrons at two energy levels, or X-rays. Considerations will also be given to the influence of age at time of irradiation upon the induction of lens opacities. Both studies are continuing, with periodic slit-lamp m… more

Feasibility Study of a New Mass Flow System : Quarterly Report No. 2 Covering the Period from September 1 to November 30, 1960

Description: This is the second quarterly report that documents a system of mass flow that can record measurements of homogeneous flow, slurries, highly corrosive fluids and multiphase fluids, additionally considering pressure drops, measuring external to the flow, ruggedness and reliability.

On Charge Conjugation

Description: It is shown that under very simple and general assumptions the existence of an antiunitary reflection transformation and the charge gauge group implies the existence of an antiparticle corresponding to a given charged particle. Similar consequences follow on replacing the charge gauge group by the baryon gauge group. No assumptions as to specific wave equations, or indeed the existence of local fields, are made.

A Time-Shared Computer Data Collection System at the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor

Description: The increasing complexity of the data of nuclear physics has led to widespread interest in the possibility of utilizing a digital computer for on-line data collection. Through the combined efforts of the Instrumentation Division and the Neutron Physics group at Brookhaven such a system has been placed into operation. Several features of this system are believed to be unique and of interest to research groups centered about a major facility like a reactor or an accelerator.

Quarterly Report Technology of Non-Production Reactor Fuels Processing Budget Activity 2790

Description: This report summarizes the research and development work carried out during December, 1959, and January and February, 1960, for Budget Activity 2790 - Separations Development for Non-Production Reactors. The major effort on Activity 2790 has been completed. Current efforts on the remaining problem areas will enable Hanford to begin reprocessing fuel elements from power reactors which employ depleted or slightly enriched uranium fuels in July, 1962.

EGCR Lattice Radial and Angular Power Distribution

Description: One of the problems encountered in the design of the EGCR has been the possibility of bowing in the outer six rods of the seven rod cluster. The power distribution in an outer rod is asymmetrical with respect to the center of the rod. This causes a variation in the cladding temperature, and might result in unven thermal expansion, or bowing.

Estimation of Reaction and Heat Release Rates for Graphite Oxidation

Description: A literature study has been made of rates for the reaction of oxygen with high-purity artificial graphite. Values from a number of sources have been expressed on a common basis which provides approximate correction for the retarding effects of oxygen diffusion in the graphite pores. The corrected rates can be correlated by the equation k = 7.24 x 10^9 exp (-22 100/T), where k has units of weight fraction oxidized per hour and T as in °K. Effects of oxygen concentration, solid and gas-phase cont… more

Wave Functions for Antishielding Factors of Ions and for the Electronic Polarisabilities of the Alkali Atoms

Description: The purpose if this paper is to present tables of perturbed wave functions which have been obtained in three recent investigations: (1) wave functions v1'(nℓ→ℓ') which pertains to the perturbation of the d electrons of various ions as a result of the potential due to a nuclear quadrupole moment Q3 (2) wave functions v1',H(nℓ→ℓ) which represent the antishielding of the d electrons for a possible nuclear hexadecapole moment H; (3) wave functions u2'(ns→p) which pertain to the dipole perturbation… more

Ultrasonic Cleaning of Fuel Elements Components

Description: Ultrasonic cleaning uses high-frequency sound waves to induce cavitation within a cleaning, medium. During cavitation, millions of small bubbles form and collapse, resulting in agitation proportional to the energy put into the solution. The making and breaking of these bubbles produce the scrubbing action associated with ultrasonic cleaning.

Silicon Nitride As A High-Temperature Radome Material

Description: LRL has the responsibility of demonstrating the feasibility of a reactor for use as a power plant for a low-altitude, high-Mach-number missile. This reactor is literally a very high power air heater which must work at temperatures in excess of 2000' F. The reactor is exposed to high loads so one of the primary problems is providing high temperature structure. Considerable effort has been devoted to developing ceramic structural elements. One of the materials considered for this purpose is silic… more
