Two-Phase Pressure Losses Second Quarterly Progress Report May 12-August 12, 1962

Description: This is the second quarterly report on the work done under Contract AT(04-3)-189, Project Agreement No. 27. The results reported here have to do primarily with the loss in a rectangular (1/2" x 1-3/4") channel in the horizontal orientation, without contraction-expansion inserts.

The sequential separation and determination of arsenic-76 and phosphorous-32 in reactor effluent water

Description: A procedure is described for the sequential separation and determination of Arsenic-76 and Phosphorous-32 in reactor effluent water. The analysis can be performed in less than one hour and the arsenic fraction is scanned immediately after separation on a multi-channel gamma spectrometer. The discrete gamma energy of .56 MEV for Arsenic-76 makes further purification unnecessary. The organic phase containing the Phosphorous-32 is dry mounted on a one-inch stainless steel dish for beta counting.

HAPO tritium production facilities study - 1958 - study reports numbers 1 and 2

Description: Start of the development of new processes to extract mint can be a gradual program. The most promising of early results lies in the area of Isotopic Purification. Steps have been initiated to start development work on separation and purification of mint gas by chromatography. This method has the added advantage over columns as three gases, hydrogen, deuterium and mint may be separated in one operation. Should it appear that this method may fail, a second approach would be development of a packe… more

Disposition of Contaminated Processing Equipment at Hanford Atomic Products Operation 1958-1959

Description: Operating plant experiences in restoring to useful service failed equipment contaminated through exposures to radioactive processes is of international interest to the nuclear industry. In accordance with a request from the Hanford Operations Office of the United States Atomic Energy Commission this report of the various measures taken in rehabilitating for re-use expensive engineered equipment has been compiled by the General Electric Company. This report is a review and summary of the dispos… more

Invention Report: Hermetically Sealed Closure on a Sheathed Thermocouple

Description: Applications of sheathed (metal) thermocouples may require in many instances, the insertion of the thermocouple thermal junction into an area that must be hermetically sealed to the outside. This same area usually contains highly reactive heat transfer medium such as an eutectic alloy of sodium and potassium of sodium alone. When fissionable materials are being irradiated, fission products that are driven off would also be present and must be contained under varying temperatures and pressures.

Richland isotope production matrix

Description: Isotope production calculations have been prepared in the past to indicate present and potential reactor capability; however, the cases evaluated generally considered production of only one or possibly two isotopes. With the wide variety and potential demand for numerous isotopes, the question arises as to what the production capability would be if several isotopes were being produced at the same time. To study this problem in more detail and determine which of several alternates may be used in… more

Ytterbium and Terbium Dodecaborides

Description: The synthesis of several rare earth dodecaborides, isomorphous with UB12 and ZrB12, and crystallographic data for these phases were reported recently. The unit cells are face centered cubic with four formula weights of MeB12 per unit cell; the structures may be visualized in terms of boron atoms linked in a rigid three-dimensional network, with the metal atoms in large cubo-octahedral holes.

Adaptation of a Commercial Counter X-Ray Diffractometer for Investigations to 3000°C

Description: The rapid advances in many technologically important areas have not only served to accentuate the increased demands for high temperature metals and ceramics but have necessitated a more through knowledge of their physical properties when exposed to high temperature service. Toward this latter end, the use of X-ray diffraction has proved an invaluable tool in providing data of regions of thermal stability, expansion coefficients, solid solubility limits, and phase transformations by direct exami… more

Seal and Insulator Problems in Thermionic Converters. Summary Report, February 15, 1961-February 15, 1962

Description: A discussion of the materials requirements for seals and insulators for thermionic energy converters is presented. Based on the requirements and published physical property data, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ appeared to be the most desirable insulator material at temperatures below its melting point. The study includes a discussion of metal ceramic sealing technology and a bibliography of publications in the field covering 1959, 1960, and part of 1961. (auth)
