Effect of increased nickel content in canning baths

Description: Canning bath Al-Si, supplied from offsite vendors and reclaimed lathe turnings in the 313 building, is used in the production of I & E fuel elements. A study was made of the effect of increasing the Ni content to over 0.5% in the canning baths, in order that all of the X-8001 scrap could be reclaimed. Effect on bond quality, weld integrity, and canning bath operation was studied. Based on adverse weld quality, slight loss in reactivity, and potential for furnace channel plugging, it is recommen… more

Laboratory determination of normal operating flow rates with enlarged outlet fittings -- BDF reactors

Description: Experiments have been conducted in the Hydraulics Laboratory, at the request of IPD`s Mechanical Development-A Operation, to determine the energy losses of various enlarged outlet fitting combinations. These experiments were conducted an steady state runs and allow the determination of the normal operating point (flow rate) of a reactor process channel under selected conditions of front header pressure and fuel charge. No attempt is made to make a mechanical or economic evaluation of the partic… more

Table of wavenumbers: Volume 1, 2000 A to 7000 A

Description: From Extension of Tables: "Because of its range and size, this table of wavenumbers is in two volumes, Volume I presenting wavenumbers for all wavelengths between 2000 and 7000 A, and Volume II giving wave-numbers for all wavelengths from 7000 A to 10000000 A=1 mm. In some cases Volume I may suffice for ionic spectra, and in others Volume II may be adequate for molecular spectra, but in general both volumes will needed to cover the entire range of spectral wavelengths measured in standard air."

Strontium-90: Recovery and lag storage interim program

Description: Increased interest in the civilian, space, and military applications of isotopic power has prompted a study by which the Chemical Processing Department can provide the interim strontium-90 requirements on a schedule considerably accelerated from that previously proposed. This document summarizes a study of the technical and operational feasibility and hazards involved in: recovery of semi-refined megacurie quantities of Sr{sup 90} from current Purex waste; lag storage of the Sr{sup 90} fraction… more

Evaluation of Experiment Off-gas System for the EGCR-LITR Capsule Experiment

Description: A proposed modification to the experiment off-gas system for the EGCR-LITR Capsule Experiment is evaluated by comparing the atmospheric radiation doses to laboratory personnel that could result in the event of an experiment failure while utilizing the present off-gas system to those doses that would result if various modifications to the existing system were effected. The modifications considered include the addition of an iodine vapor adsorber and a krypton-xenon adsorber. The addition of an i… more

Production test IP-362-A, irradiation of heavy walled tubular elements with thick outer jackets

Description: The objective of the production test detailed in this report is to evaluate the effect of a 36 mil Zircaloy-2 outer jacket on the behavior of heavy walled tubular elements during high temperature irradiation. Zircaloy-2 jacketed unalloyed natural uranium fuel elements nominally 1.43 inch OD, 0.52 inch ID, with 36 mil jackets on the outer surfaces will be irradiated in the KER Loops to an exposure not greater than 3500 WD/T. Several of the fuel element failures that have occurred during testing … more

Kinematics And Dispersion Relations For General Production Processes

Description: The method of dispersion relations has in recent years found a wide application for the study of elementary particle reactions. Most of the work, however, deals with reactions of the type [formula], while the theory of those with more than two particles in the final state is still in a very preliminary stage. One reason for this is that even with only three particles in the final state the theory is already much more complicated. Nevertheless, a further development of the theory seemed to us ve… more

Revised requirements for continuous birch recovery at Redox

Description: The process criteria proposed use of the existing organic wash column, 10, as a stripping column for the neptunium accumulation and isolation cycles. It is now proposed to employ a new processing concept which will permit the use of the scrub section of the neptunium extraction column, 1S, for neptunium stripping thereby obviating the use of the 10 Column. This proposed new scheme will provide increased neptunium stripping efficiency and greater processing flexibility for the 1S Column. The rev… more

Thermal and Fission Neutron Flux Measurements in Process Tubing and in Neutron Activation Test Locations

Description: Neutron activation analysis provides the extremely high sensitivity necessary for the measurement of many trace elements. Activation techniques are presently being used to measure the concentrations of various undesirable parent isotopes in reactor process tubing, slug jackets and their corrosion film, and in process vater and vater treatment chemicals. The interpretation of results from activation analysis are sometimes complicated by the fact that a given radioisotope may be produced by fissi… more

Hamiltonian Dynamics of Relativistic Particles

Description: "The canonical (hamiltonlan) formulation of a relativistic dynamical theory is outlined, and the existence and explicit construction of general hamiltonian theories of relativiatic interacting particles are discussed. These hamiltonian theories are shown to contain certain elements of arbitrariness which are eliminated in manifestly coveriant formulations."

Description of Method for Determining Geometric Parameters of Surfaces in Contact

Description: "A method and equipment are described for determining the surface parameters of contact required for heat transfer calculations. In this method, the output of a surface analyzer for one surface is recorded on one channel of magnetic tape and the output for the other surface of the contact pair on a second channel. The tape is played back to an analog computer which then integrates the analog voltage to compute the void volume thickness, the number of contact points, and the ratio of metallic co… more

RADIOISOTOPE AND RADIATION APPLICATIONS. Quarterly Progress Report

Description: Results of the final dynamic experiments with the ironremoval process model using Fe/sup 59/ indicated that the intrinsic-radiotracer method is rapid, accurate, and suitable for continuous readout. Results from both static and dynamic experiments on the use of Mn/sup 54/ to aid in removing manganese from process water indicated that intrinsic radiotracers can be used to help remove low-concentration critical impurities. One phase of the hazards evaluation was concerned with the ingestion of rad… more

Development and Testing of Low Cost Fuel Elements for Power Reactor Service

Description: The development of swaging and vibratory compaction process for fabrication of clad UO2 fuel rods is described. The cost is less than 50% of that for an equivalent core fabricated from pellets. The irradiation testing of vibratory filled and swaged UO2 rods is reported for burn-ups from 2,000 to 12,000 Mwd/t UO2; the results indicate that the rods are capable of excellent performance power reactors.

Local Fields With Terminating Expansions (x)

Description: "The quantum theory problem of constructing explicitly a local Lorentz invariant model field theory which has an asymptotic particle interpretation and gives rise to an S matrix different from unity is discussed. It is proved that if a local covariant field H(x) has a complete current, the S matrix associated with this field is identically equal to unity. Results show that in order to get an interaction, the current is not allowed to have a terminating expansion in terms of a free field. The ab… more
