Interim Report on Free-Spinning-Tunnel Investigation of a 1/25-Scale Model of the McDonnell F3H-1N Airplane, TED No. NACA AD 3100

Description: "An investigation was conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a 1/23-scale model of the McDonnell F3H-1N airplane. The effects of control settings and movements upon the erect and inverted spin and recovery characteristics of the model were determined for the clean condition. Spin-recovery parachute tests were also performed. The results indicated that erect spins obtained on the airplane for the take-off or combat loadings should be satisfactorily terminated if full rudder rev… more

Interpretation and Evaluation of the Uranium Occurences Near Goodsprings, Nevada: Final Report

Description: Abstract: The uranium occurrences near Goodsprings, Clark Co., Nevada, are divided into two distinct types which differ from each other in geographic distribution, localization of mineralization, mineralogy and origin. None of the known deposits is of present commercial significance and therefore this study emphasizes the genetic rather than the economic aspects.

The Determination of Product Variability

Description: One of the distinguishing features of many chemical production processes is that the process variation is obscured by measurement errors which are of the same order of magnitude or greater. This paper will discuss some elementary means of estimating true product variability under these conditions.

Fluidized-Bed Process for the Production of Uranium Tetrafluoride (Green Salt) From Uranyl Nitrate. Interim Report

Description: A proposed new processing technique for the production of uranium tetrafluoride from uranyl nitrate solution is described. This technique involves the application of the fluidized-bod principle for the contacting of gases with powdered solids. A new application of fluidization developed at this Laboratory and applied to the denitration of uranyl nitrate to produce uranium trioxide is also described. The purpose of this work is to develop a low-cost, continuous process for the denitration of ura… more

Air Sample Activity vs Flow Rate

Description: A bibliography on the subject of air sample activity vs flow rate has been prepared. The findings in two documents reviewed have been applied directly to this problem. It is concluded that air sample activity is not dependent on flow rate when sampling particles whose average diameter in 0.06 micron or greater.

Comparison of low-speed rotor and cascade performance for medium-camber NACA 65-(C(sub lo)A(sub 10) 10 compressor-blade sections over a wide range of rotor blade-setting angles at solidities. of 1.0 and 0.5

Description: Report presenting testing of a medium-camber compressor rotor with particular NACA blades in a low-speed 28-inch test blower. Testing was made at solidities of 1.0 and 0.5 without guide vanes or stators over a wide range of blade-setting angles and quantity flow rates. Results regarding overall rotor performance, comparison between measured and estimated section efficiencies near design angle of attack, comparison between low-speed rotor and cascade turning angles, and detailed blade section pe… more

Low-Speed Measurements of Rolling and Yawing Stability Derivatives of a 60 Degree Delta-Wing Model

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation in the free-flight tunnel to determine the low-speed rolling and yawing stability derivatives of a 60 degree delta-wing model from 0 to 30 degrees angle of attack. The derivatives were measured by the free-to-damp oscillation technique and by the steady-roll technique.

Preliminary Low-Speed Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Some Aspects of the Aerodynamic Problems Associated with Missiles Carried Externally in Positions Near Airplane Wings

Description: A low-speed wind-tunnel investigation has been made of some aspects of the aerodynamic problems associated with the use of air-to-air missiles when carried externally on aircraft. Measurements of the forces and moments on a missile model for a range of positions under the mid-semispan location of a 45deg sweptback wing indicated longitudinal and lateral forces with regard to both carriage and release of the missiles. Surveys of the characteristics of the flow field in the region likely to be tr… more

T Plant first cycle waste scavenging

Description: A scavenging process for the TBP Plant wastes has recently been installed and is expected to result in a considerable reduction in the waste tankage required for storage of TBP Plant Wastes. A similar process has been developed for scavenging the first cycle waste from the BiPO{sub 4} Plants. A study of future requirements and availability of tank storage space indicates that in order to avoid an overall plant critical tank shortage, or the necessity of construction of new tanks, a T-Plant wast… more

Redox decontamination performance

Description: Since start-up of the Redox Plant, different types of decontamination difficulties have been experienced and corrective measures taken. Current decontamination performance is superior to that ever experienced before. However, with the apparent need for the for elimination of the permanganate Head-End process for the IAF oxidation, several modifications to the plant flowsheet and equipment have been planned in order to obtain satisfactory overall decontamination without permanganate Head-End. The corrosion of Hanford fuel elements: Method for the treatment and analyses of in-pile corrosion data

Description: The corrosion rates of slug jackets exposed in the Hanford piles are monitored to determine optimum operating conditions and to evaluate proposed changes in process specifications. Selected process tubes are charged with weighed slugs, and the coolant flow rate and temperature rise through the tubes are recorded until the slugs are discharged. The corrosion rates of these control slugs are computed from weight loss data after discharge. The data obtained in this manner are used to find the rela… more

Second Report on Liquid Metal Level Instrument

Description: The liquid metal level instrument will operate at tank temperatures up to 1000 F. Overall system accuracy depends on operating conditions, as described in the report. Test accuracies from 2 to 8% have been obtained from full to empty tank. The primary detector unit successfully passed navy HI shock test.

Experimental investigation of acceleration characteristics of a turbojet engine including regions of surge and stall for control applications

Description: The acceleration characteristics, in the region of maximum acceleration and compressor stall and surge, of an axial-flow turbojet engine with a fixed-area exhaust nozzle were determined by subjecting the engine to fuel flow steps, ramps, and ramps with a sine wave superimposed. From the data obtained, the effectiveness of an optimalizer type of control for this engine was evaluated. At all speeds above 40 percent of rated, a maximum acceleration was not obtained until the engine reached the poi… more

Experimental Investigation of Control Signals and the Nature of Stall and Surge Behavior in a Turbojet Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting an axial-flow turbojet engine operated on a sea-level static test stand to determine whether or not detectable signals were present in pressures and blade stresses that are usable as stall warnings in control applications. Surge and stall behavior were closely examined for the unique characteristics that could be used to control engine behavior in the vicinity of surge and stall. Results regarding a steady-state survey, acceleration study, investigation of an optimalizing … more

Description: "An experimental investigation of the stage performance of the J71 three-stage turbine at design speed and pressure ratio was conducted as part of a program involving research on the design and operational characteristics of high-work-output multistage axial-flow turbines. The investigation indicated that the over-all work output of the turbine based on temperature measurements at design speed and pressure ratio was 95 percent of the design value, with the greatest loss in work output and effic… more
