100-Mw Nuclear Power Plant Utilizing a Sodium Cooled, Graphite Moderated Reactor

Description: The conceptual design of a 100 Mw(e) nuclear power plant is described. The plant utilized a sodium-cooled graphite-moderated reactor with stainless- steel clad. slightiy enriched UO/sub 2/ fuel. The reactor is provided with three main coolant circuits, and the steam cycle has three stages of regenerative heating. The plant control system allows automatic operation over the range of 20 to 100% load, or manual operation at all loads. The site, reactor, sodium systems, reactor auxiliaries, fuel handling, instrumentation, turbine-generator, buildings. and safety measures are described. Engineering drawings are included. (W.D.M.)

ACTIVATION CROSS SECTION OF Na$sup 23$ AROUND 3 KEV

Description: The activation cross section of sodium in the range from thermal energy through the 3-kev resonance is generally assumed to be given by the one-level BreitWigner formula, the GAMMA /sub gamma / being selected to describe correctly the known thermal absorption cross section. The contribution of this resonance to the resonance activation integral then turns out to be 0.12 barns. This somewhat indirectly inferred value is considerably larger than the value given by Dancoff et al., in an old paper, the latter value being based on experimental work. It is shown in the present memo, that Dancoff's actual measurements are quite consistent with the Breit-Wigner formula and the above mentioned GAMMA /sub gamma /. The discrepancy is a result of Dancoff's transition from the actual measurements to the resonance integral, this transition being based on data that is now obsolete. (auth)

Activity of fission products as a function of decay time, and relationship to the TBP process

Description: Fission product distribution, fission product activities, and decontamination factors are terms of general usage in the Chemical Development Section. Specific values for some of these terms have been based upon data procured several years ago. In many cases more accurate basic numbers are now available. This report sets forth in tabular form detailed information on fission product activities as a function of decay time for certain conditions. It attempts to quality the use of the theoretical curie as a unit of activity to a unit having a more direct practical significance, the ``countable curie.``

Additional Experiments With Flat-Top Wing- Body Combinations at High Supersonic Speeds

Description: Memorandum presenting an experimental study of the effects of several variations in configuration geometry on the aerodynamic characteristics of flat-top wing-body combinations. Generally, the configurations consist of one half of a body of revolution mounted beneath a wing of essentially arrow plan form. Results regarding the effect of trailing-edge sweep, effect of the addition of auxiliary bodies, effect of tip-flap deflection, effect of dihedral, effect of leading-edge sweep, effect of fuselage fineness ratio, effect of fuselage profile shape, and static longitudinal stability characteristics are provided.

Adhesive and protective characteristics of ceramic coating A-417 and its effect on engine life of forged Refractaloy-26 (AMS 5760) and cast stellite 21 (AMS 5385) turbine blades

Description: The adhesive and protective characteristics of National Bureau of Standards Coating A-417 were investigated, as well as the effect of the coating on the life of forged Refractaloy 26 and cast Stellite 21 turbine blades. Coated and uncoated blades were run in a full-scale J33-9 engine and were subjected to simulated service operations consisting of consecutive 20-minute cycles (15 min at rated speed and approximately 5 min at idle). The ceramic coating adhered well to Refractaloy 26 and Stellite 21 turbine blades operated at 1500 degrees F. The coating also prevented corrosion of the Refractaloy 26, a corrosion-sensitive nickel-base alloy, and of the Stellite 21, a relatively corrosion-resistant cobalt-base alloy. Although the coating prevented corrosion of both alloys, it had no apparent effect on blade life.

Description: From Introduction: "Presented in this paper are the results of an investigation of a semispan model of a delta wing with 60^o sweepback at the leading edge which was equipped with a large triangular control having an overhang balance mounted on a skewed hinge axis. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a delta wing with a control which was designed to provide aerodynamic balance at zero control deflection based on the span load distribution of reference 1."

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 0.04956-Scale Model of the Convair F-102B Airplane at Mach Numbers of 1.41, 1.61, and 2.01: Coord No. AF-231

Description: Report discussing testing of a scale model of the Convair F-102B to determine its aerodynamic characteristics at several Mach numbers. Four basic body modifications and two afterbody configurations were evaluated.The body modifications were all found to slightly reduce values of minimum drag, but did not cause a change in the static stability and lift-curve-slope values compared to the F-102A.
