A PORTABLE BANDSAW FOR HOT CELL USE

THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE: PROSPECTS FOR REDUCING ITS COST

Description: Nuclear fuel cost of 1.25 mills/kwh would make nuclear power competitive with conventional power in lowcost coal areas if capital and operating costs can be brought to within about 10 percent of those of coal-fired plants. Substantial decreases in fuel fabrication cost are anticipated by 1970: other costs in the fuel cycle are expccted to remain about the same as at present. Unit costs and irradiation levels that would be needed to give a fuel cost of 1.25 mills/kwh are believed to be attainable by 1970. (auth)

Intermediate Heat Exchanger Preliminary Design. Vol. 1, IHX Preliminary Design

Description: Preface: The intermediate heat exchanger is designed for operation in a nuclear power plant using liquid sodium as the primary and secondary coolant. Since the primary fluid coming from the reactor is radioactive, the purpose of the IHX is to transfer heat to a nonradioactive fluid which then goes to a steam generator. Because of this activity the until will be enclosed in a concrete pit and will not be accessible during periods of operation. Immediately after shut down it will be necessary to allow time for radioactive decay before the unit will be accessible to personnel. Because of inaccessibility and possible long periods allowed for decay time, it is imperative that the unit give trouble free operation. During periods of shut down, the internals should have easy access for inspection and repair if necessary so that down time is held to a minimum. The general arrangement of the heat exchanger described in this report presents a conventional design utilizing known materials and existing methods of fabrication. In further consideration of all concepts, designs and analyses developed during this period of the program, it is felt that this preliminary design will provide an intermediate sodium heat exchanger of lower cost and more reliable operation.

Graphite burn-out resulting from carbon monoxide formation in C Pile

Description: With the introduction of carbon dioxide into the piles as a gas atmosphere, new problems arose which concerned the chemical reactions undergone by the pile graphite with the gas atmosphere. In the interest of obtaining a better understanding of the nature and extent of these graphite-gas reactions, mass spectrometer analyses of the pile gas from a selected sampling port at C Pile were initiated at the time of start-up of that unit and were continued until several steady state conditions had been observed. The results of these analyses are presented and discussed herein.

Determination of vortex paths by series expansion technique with application to cruciform wings

Description: A series method of determining two-dimensional vortex paths is considered and applied to the computation of vortex positions behind a slender equal-span cruciform wing at any angle of bank as a function of the distance behind the trailing edge. Calculated paths are shown for four bank angles. For a bank angle of 45 degrees comparison is made with the results of a closed expression given in NACA-TN-2605. For other bank angles water-tank experiments provide qualitative comparison. Satisfactory agreement is found for a sufficient distance downstream to include most practical missile-tail positions. The interference forces on an equal-span cruciform wing are calculated for five angles of bank (including the trivial case of zero bank) from the vortex positions found by use of the series.

Study of Some Dielectric Properties of Suspensions of Magnesium Particles in Mineral Oil

Description: The variation of dielectric constant has been measured as a function of the concentration of magnesium particles; the shape, size, and degree of oxidation of the particles; the temperature; and the frequency of oscillation. The variation of dielectric constant and settling rate was investigated as a function of time. Also investigated were the effects of particle concentration, shape and time on dielectric losses.

Flight measurements of the low-speed characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing airplane with area suction boundary-layer control on the flaps

Description: Report presenting tests to determine the flight characteristics of an F-86A airplane equipped with an area-suction boundary-layer-control system on the flaps and to investigate the possible operational problems which may arise on a flight installation of boundary-layer control. Results regarding the airplane with slatted leading edge, suction requirements, airplane with suction flap and various leading-edge configurations, factors affecting flap lift increment, and operational characteristics of boundary-layer control are provided.

A flight investigation of the effect of leading-edge camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of a swept-wing airplane

Description: Report presenting flight measurements on a swept-wing jet aircraft to determine the effects of adding forward camber and an increased leading-edge radius on the low-speed stalling characteristics, the high-speed static longitudinal stability, and the airplane drag. The modified leading edge produced values of maximum lift somewhat greater than the slats on a normal airplane, but the stall was unacceptable because of an abrupt roll-off.

Longitudinal Frequency-Response Characteristics of the Douglas D-558-I Airplane as Determined From Experimental Transient-Response Histories to Mach Number of 0.90

Description: Report presenting information regarding transient oscillations observed in response to elevator pulses of the Douglas D-558-I airplane at a range of Mach numbers and altitudes. An application of the Fourier transform was used to obtain the frequency-response characteristics. The effects of lift coefficient on the frequency response are also included.
