Rocket-Model Investigation to Determine the Hinge-Moment and Normal-Force Properties of a Full-Span, Constant-Chord, Partially Balanced Trailing-Edge Control on a 60 Degree Clipped Delta Wing Between Mach Numbers of 0.50 and 1.26

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-powered research model to determine the hinge-moment and normal-force characteristics of a trailing-edge control on a delta wing between Mach numbers of 0.50 and 1.26. The hinge-line location of 40 percent control chord satisfactorily reduced the high hinge moments associated with plain flap-type controls. Results regarding hinge moments and normal force are provided.

Extension of Alpha- and Beta-Decay Systematics of ProtactiniumIsotopes

Description: As part of the program for obtaining data to extend the scope of the systematics of alpha-radioactivity and to obtain more data pertaining to the energy surface in the heavy region of elements, they have made some pertinent new measurements on protactinium isotopes. The heaviest isotope of protactinium hitherto reported is that of mass 234 and hence it would be of interest to know the beta-emission properties of heavier isotopes in order to tie them in with the known radioactive data in this ge… more

Electrodeposition of Aluminum on Uranium

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum electroplating was studied in a search for new methods of cladding uranium fuel elements. Uranium electroclad with 12 mils of aluminum over a 0.5-mil (or nickel plus copper) electroplate resisted corrosion for more than 100 hr in boiling water. This quality of protection was effected by hot pressing the electroclad uranium with 5.1 tons per sq in. for 5 min at 950 F. The electroclad uranium with hot-pressed samples paralleled those of later experiments with hot-pressed wroug… more

Determination of Rare Earths in Refined Uranium : Topical Report

Description: Abstract: "Rare-earth analyses were performed on several samples of refined uranium oxide and nitrate, using a modified cellulose column procedure. Rare earths were not detectable in samples of 0.03 shotgun of less. Detection limits were from 0.0005 to 0.015 ppm. Negligible quantities of low-cross-section rare earths were found in less pure uranium samples, obtained during start-up operations of the pilot plant at the Feed Materials Production Center, primarily those rare earths of greater than… more

A Study of Internal Friction and Twin-Boundary Movement in Uranium

Description: From abstract: "The internal friction of recrystallized uranium has been shown to depend directly on heating and cooling rates and on the rate of application or removal of an external stress during measurement. At zero heating or stress rate, the internal friction falls to a low value and appears to decrease indefinitely at room temperature. Micrographs showing twin disappearance on removal or reversal of load are shown...It is concluded that the various internal-friction phenomena are the resu… more

Dissolution of Zirconium Matrix Fuels in Molten Fluoride Salts

Description: The application of the Volatility Process for reprocessing spent reactor fuels to zirconium fuel elements requires the conversion of the fuel to a fluoride form. This conversion can be accomplished by the dissolution of such fuels in a bath of molten fluoride salts with a hydrogen fluoride sparge. Studies with dummy zirconium fuel elements showed dissolution rates averaging 2 mg/sq cm-min. The effect of submergence, geometrical configuration, and HF impingement rate appeared more significant th… more

Determination of Maximum Permissible Leakage from the HRT Process Steam System

Description: Calculations were made to determine the radiation hazard to HRT personnel as a result of leakage to the atmosphere from the process steam system in the event of a heat exchanger tube rupture. These calculations show that with the present four-minute delay before dumping approximately 1020 lb of fuel solution may be transferred to the steam system. The radiation hazard from fission products in the atmosphere will be negligible, if the steam killer blower is operating. If this blower is not opera… more

Removal of Fission Products from High Level Radioactive Waste Solutions

Description: Ion exchange, electrolysis, solvent extraction, scavenging and precipitation have been studied as methods for removing radioactive isotopes from high level wastes. Process development has been limited to laboratory research and small scale engineering tests so that the efficiency of these methods in large scale operations is unknown. Emphasis has been placed on removal of Strontium90 and Cesium137 which are the most biologically hazardous of the long lived radioisotopes. Continuous processing o… more

Aqueous Corrosion of 2S Aluminum at Elevated Temperatures

Description: 2S aluminum corrodes uniformly in nearly pure water at rates which increase with temperature. Although normal corrosion is not extraordinarily rapid up to well over 250 degrees C, The usefulness of the material might be limited since above 200̊C intergranular attack occurs, with resultant more rapid penetration and deterioration of the metal.

Quarterly Report of the Solution Materials Section for the Period Ending January 31, 1959

Description: Deposition of U, Cu, and Ni sulfates from dilute simulated HR fuel solution circulated through a heated Zircaloy-2 pipe section is reported. It was found that deposition occurred under boiling conditions in horizontal pipes because of a gas space which prevented wetting in the upper part of the pipe. Other salt deposition studies in an in-pile loop are reported. Effectiveness of of two different hydro clone mountings in removing corrosion products from a loop was studied. Results of chemical st… more

Quarterly Report of the Solution Materials Section for the Period Ending April 30, 1959

Description: Studies concerned with the deposition of salts from simulated fuel solutions under boiling conditions were continues. Deposition of salts did not occur when a heated Zircolary-2 bypass section was mounted either vertically or horizontally, even when the flow rate was low and the het flux was high. However, when the bypass was mounted about 10 degrees from the horizontal, deposition occurred readily provided the flow rate was low and the solutions boiled. Additional deposition tests were carried… more
