Spectrophotometry of Molten Fluoride Salts. Status Report

Description: Progress made in the field of spectrophotometry of molten fluoride salts is summarized. The high-temperature cell assembly designed and fabricated for use in this work is described, as well as the various types of sample containers used. Spectra of nickel fluoride, cobalt fluoride, chromic fluoride, and uranium tetrafluoride in LiF--NaF-KF (46.5-11.5--42 mole%) are presented. (auth)

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis VIII. The Role of MalicAcid

Description: Malonate has been found to inhibit the formation of malic acid during short periods of photosynthesis with radioactive carbon dioxide. This result, together with studies which show the photosynthetic cycle to be operating normally at the same time, indicates that malic acid is not an intermediate in photosynthesis but is probably closely related to some intermediate of the cycle. Absence of labeled succinic and fumaric acids in these experiments, in addition to the failure of malonate to inhibi… more

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF THORIUM CHEMISTRY AND METALLURGY. Monthly Progress Report for April 16 to May 15, 1955

Description: A continuous belt drier capable of handling 1000 lbs of oxycarbonate per day was completed, installed, and operated to produce a satisfactory product for chlorination. An experimental chlorinator was also completed. All necessary pants were completed for the fabrication of Horizons' Mark VI continuous electrolytic cell. Evaluations of oxycarbonate materials for chlorination wiih varying chlorinating agents were made, and many of the variables such as water content and CO/sub 2/ values were esta… more

A Martensitic Reaction for Uranium

Description: Hardness measurements of specimens quenched from the beta yields alpha phase at different cooling rates support the proposed martensitic beta yields alpha transformation for urnnium. Specimens held in 635 and 600 deg C isothermal baths prior to subsequent quenching to --5 deg C require more than 10 and two seconds, respectively before diffusion mechanlsms for beta yields alpha transformation commence. Once started, about 500 seconds are required to complete transformation by diffusion at these … more

Brief Review of Heat Transfer Problems Encountered in the Production of Magnetic Fields

Description: The design of internally cooled electrical coils for the production of high intensity magnetic fields presents many new aspects and combinations of the familiar modes of heat transfer. However, the customary methodology appears to be sufficient for preliminary analysis and understanding of those problems. This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of this equati… more

THE EFFECT OF PLANT THERMAL EFFICIENCY ON THE COST OF NUCLEAR POWER

Description: Nuclear power cost is plotted versus thermal efficiency. The relationship is not limited to any particular reactor type and is applicable for any reactor system where steam is the working fiuid for the turbogenerator. (T- R.H-)

Vinyl Coating of Graphite Plates for Ultrasonic Inspection

Description: A process has been developed for application of a thin, adherent vinyi plastic coating to graphite plates to prevent absorption of coupling fluids'' used in ultrasonic inspection. The plates are preheated and dipped mechanically in a fluid plastisol, and the resulting coating is fused in an infra-red heater. No significant attenuation of ultrasonic impulse results from presence of the coating. After inspection, the vinyl sheath may be easily stripped from the plate. (auth)

SIR FREEZE SEAL TEST II

Description: Two arrangements of internal components of a freeze seal model were tested in order to determine the hydraulic characteristics. The internal configuration employing cylindrical knitted mesh packings in the connecting pipes proved the most suitable for the Na servicing freeze seal, because these packings are more easily fabricated. PROGRESS ON THE USE OF GAS-PRESSURE BONDING FOR FABRICATING LOW-COST CERAMIC, CERMET, AND DISPERSION FUELS

Description: Basic properties of several types and grades of commercial UO/sub 2/ have been determined. Compacting characteristics of these powders were evaluated with the objective of obtaining a minimum cold-pressed density of 70% of theoretical prior to gas-pressure bonding. Fused and special dense grades of UO/ sub 2/ powders were compacted to a density of 85% of theoretical by use of a 50- tsi compacting pressure. Cold-pressed compacts were simultaneously clad and densified to a maximum he UO/sub 2/ po… more

Nuclear Gas Engine

Description: A preliminary design study of the nuclear gas engine, consisting of a gas-cooled reactor directly coupled to a reciprocating engine, is presented. The principles of operation of the proposed gas engine are outlined and typical variations anre discussed. The nuclear gas engine is compared with other reciprocating engines and air compressors. A comparison between the ideal and actual cycles is made, with particular attention given to pumping, heat, and other losses to be expected. The application… more
